Effortless victory for India
Nottingham, august 30 Having lost the toss and being put in to bat at Trent Bridge, the home team were bowled out for 227, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin leading the way with three for 39. Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina then shared a partnership of 87 for the fourth wicket to help India reach their target with seven overs remaining. England struggled to cope with the slow bowlers in Wednesday's 133-run defeat and after a stand of 82 in the third match, openers Alastair Cook (44) and Alex Hales (42) fell to part-time spinners Rayudu and Raina respectively. Slow left-armer Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin then removed Joe Root (2) and Eoin Morgan (10) as the hosts lost their first four wickets for 38 runs. Ian Bell (28) was superbly run out by Mohit Sharma before Ashwin dismissed Ben Stokes for two. Jos Buttler (42) became Ashwin's third victim and India then took the final two wickets of James Tredwell (30) and Steven Finn (6). India attacked the bowling from the start but Shikhar Dhawan (16) fell to Woakes and fast bowler Finn, making his first England appearance in more than a year, had Ajinkya Rahane caught behind by Buttler for 45. Virat Kohli's 40 steadied the ship before Rayudu (64 not out) and Raina (42) led the visitors home. England captain Alastair Cook said, “We didn't play very well. We had another good start and should have got more from 80 for none. We aren't doing it right in the middle at the moment. We have to keep working and try to improve otherwise we won't get enough runs. It's easier said than done, but we have to work our nuts off to get better.” — Agencies Scoreboard England Cook st Dhoni b Rayudu 44 Hales c Dhoni b Raina 42 Bell run out (Sharma) 28 Root st Dhoni b Jadeja 2 Morgan c Dhoni b Ashwin 10 Buttler b Ashwin 42 Stokes c Raina b Ashwin 2 Woakes c Sharma b Shami 15 Tredwell c&b Kumar 30 Finn run out (Rayudu/Dhoni) 6 Anderson not out 0 Extras: (lb 3, w 2, nb 1) 6 Total: (all out; 50 ov) 227 Fall of wickets: 1-82 2-93 3-97 4-120 5-138 6-149 7-182 8-202 10-227 Bowling Bhuvneshwar 8-0-45-1 Mohit 3-0-17-0 Shami 9-0-40-1 Ashwin 10-0-39-3 Raina 8-0-37-1 Rayudu 2-0-8-1 Jadeja 10-0-38-1 India Rahane c Buttler b Finn 45 Dhawan c Morgan b Woakes 16 Kohli c Tredwell b Stokes 40 Rayudu not out 64 Raina c Woakes b Tredwell 42 Jadeja not out 12 Extras: (lb 2, w 7) 9 Total (4 wickets; 43 ov) 228 Fall of wickets: 1-35 2-85 3-120 4-207 Bowling Anderson 7-0-29-0 Woakes 8-1-43-1 Tredwell 10-1-46-1 Finn 8-0-50-1 Stokes 6-0-31-1 Root 4-0-27-0 |
Sindhu loses in semis, settles for bronze
Copehnagen, August 30 Sindhu had created history on Friday when she made the last four to become the first Indian to notch two medals at the sport's most prestigious event, having also clinched the bronze last year in Guangzhou. Expecting to go one better this time around, the 11th seed’s dream was shattered by the Spaniard, who took the contest 21-17 21-15 in 47 minutes at the Ballerup Super Arena. The ninth seed will take on World No.1 and reigning Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China in the final. World No. 10 Marin started the match in perfect fashion, taking a 6-2 lead. However, Sindhu made optimum use of her height to scalp the next six points and snatch the lead. However, the feisty Spaniard looked much more confident and used her deceptive shots to catch her Indian opponent off-guard. The European champion was way ahead at 18-11 before Sindhu tried to fight back. But it was a little too late as the 21-year-old closed out the game in the next couple of minutes. Though Marin tried carrying the momentum into the second round, it turned out to be a neck-and-neck affair with Sindhu coming out with a better game. But as the game progressed, Sindhu, who looked a bit tired after two extremely long matches in the previous two rounds, lost steam and Marin took full advantage of that to retrieve almost everything. It seemed it was Marin's day as even her mistimed shots were turning out to be winners. Sindhu tried flat smashes which became too predictable for the Spaniard, who in turn used some exquisite cross-court drops, completely surprising the Commonwealth Games bronze medallist. From 13-all, Marin won eight of the next 10 points to seal her spot in the final and also take a 2-1 lead in career meetings over Sindhu. This is only the fourth time an Indian has won a medal at the Worlds. Prakash Padukone started the trend when he won the men's singles bronze in 1983. Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa clinched the women's doubles bronze in 2011. — Agencies Important results

New York, August 30 Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, a former phenom now a 32-year-old veteran who had to fight through qualifying, shocked second-seeded Halep, the French Open runner-up, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2. The reward for the 121st-ranked Lucic-Baroni is a fourth-round meeting with 13th-seeded Italian Sara Errani, who thwarted Williams 6-0, 0-6, 7-6 (7/5). At the other end of the age spectrum, Swiss 17-year-old Belinda Bencic toppled sixth-seeded German Angelique Kerber 6-1, 7-5. Bencic, the 2013 Wimbledon and French Open junior champion, now ranked 58th in the world, earned a meeting with former World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Sweden’s Johanna Larsson. The last Grand Slam of the year has now lost four of its top 10 women's seeds, after the second-round departures of Agnieszka Radwanska and Ana Ivanovic. Errani’s triumph over 19th-seeded Williams wasn't strictly speaking an upset, but the 13th-seeded Italian had to dig deep to notch her first career victory over the American after three defeats. “I know that was a really tough match, even if I won the first set 6-0 she’s an amazing player,” Errani said. And as she expected, seven-time Grand Slam champion Williams battled back, racing through the second set to set up a third that turned into a slugfest. Williams twice came back from a break down in the third, then broke Errani to serve for the match at 5-3. She couldn't hang on, however, surrendering her serve as they battled to the tiebreaker, in which Errani took a 5-2 lead only for Williams to battle back to 5-5 before at last succumbing. Sharapova also found herself in a power struggle, but emerged with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Sabine Lisicki. Second-seeded Roger Federer found a way past the booming serve of Sam Groth in a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 second round victory over the 104th-ranked Australian. New York, August 30 The Indo-Czech pair needed only an hour and 23 minutes to move past Chinese Taipei-Czech combine of Yen-Hsun Lu and Jiri Vesely 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the second round on Court No.5. Both the teams broke their opponents once in the first set leading to the tie-breaker which the sixth seeds won quite easily. In the second set, Lu and Vesely broke Paes and Stepanek once but the defending champions broke the unseeded pair twice which proved to be the difference. — Agencies Women's Round 3

Nottingham, August 30 Anderson was received with huge boos from the Indian supporters the moment he stepped out at the crease to bat after the dismissal of James Tredwell in the last over. Interestingly, Jadeja too had faced the ire of the local fans during the second Test when he had come out to bat at Lord’s in July. Jadeja and Anderson had grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons during the first Test, following an unsavoury incident between the two when the two teams were returning for lunch on the second day. The incident snowballed into a big issue when India protested against Anderson's aggressive behaviour and England decided to lodge a formal protest against Jadeja. Kohli-Stokes involved in a verbal spat
A brief verbal spat today broke out between Virat Kohli and England pacer Ben Stokes during the third One-dayer, leading to the umpires calling the home side captain and the bowler before the match continued. Kohli was dismissed on 40 in the 26th over off the bowling of Stokes in India's run chase but while walking back to the dressing room, the visiting batsman apparently heard something said by the pacer. Kohli retorted by raising his bat for a few seconds towards Stokes. The Indian, however, moved on towards the boundary line and did not turn back though it was clear from his body language that he was not happy with what he had heard. Reports said that Stokes provoked Kohli and television replays showed the England pacer saying something towards the Indian though it was not known what he said. On-field umpires Michael Gough of England and Paul Reiffel of Australia called home side captain Alastair Cook and Stokes after the incident. — Agencies |
Punjab Police win
Jalandhar, August 30 Punjab Police's Harinder Singh shot home the first goal of the match in the 12th minute. Jaswinder Singh scored the second in the 47th minute, when he collected a pass from Pawandeep Singh and dribbled past two JCT defenders to net the ball. Jagdeep Singh (82 min) scored the third goal. JCT's Baljit Singh has received second caution of the league and will miss the third round match against United Punjab FC. |
A joyless night for Manchester fans
London, August 30 Mame Biram Diouf scored a superb individual goal to silence the City fans who have become used to seeing one-sided romps at their Etihad stadium, especially against EPL’s lesser lights. This was only the second time in 71 games that City had failed to score at home. “It’s a surprising defeat because we don’t expect to lose against Stoke but these games sometimes happen,” City’s manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “We tried from everywhere but did not find the space and that is credit to Stoke.” It was an equally miserable day for City’s rivals Manchester United whose frustrations continued in a 0-0 draw at promoted Burnley with British-record signing Angel Di Maria unable to spark an improvement in their fortunes. Di Maria, signed from Real Madrid for £59.7 million on Tuesday, showed flashes of his talent in a 70-minute debut, but United still looked short of attacking ideas, claiming only their second point from their opening three league games. “A club like Man U has to win. We have two points from nine and that’s disappointing,” manager Louis van Gaal said. — Reuters Milan agree two-year Torres loan with Chelsea AC Milan agreed a two-year loan deal with Chelsea for misfit striker Fernando Torres on Friday but the Spaniard has yet to agree terms and decide to end his London nightmare. Milan are desperate for a cut-price but big-name forward after selling Mario Balotelli to Liverpool while Chelsea have new frontman Diego Costa and returning old favourite Didier Drogba ahead of Torres in their pecking order. |
