Lyrical freedom
Stories of valour have always inspired Punjabi singers. Little wonder then, they have come up with songs that arouse intense patriotic fervour…
Jasmine Singh

High spirit: (clockwise from top) Vinaypal Buttar, Nishawn Bhullar, Ammy Virk, Jassi Gill and Gurdas Maan

Soorma panj pistolon waley kardey fire firangi tey…fire in his eyes, stretching his vocal chords, Punjabi singer-actor Nishawn Bhullar croons this patriotic number in his national award-winning film Nabar. This, however, is not a 'mere' promotional track.

Nishawn, an avid reader, in fact, has sung quite a few patriotic tracks, including Tere photo Bhagat Singh and Jugni. "Patriotic songs are not just a trend; they are a tribute that every Punjabi singer has given to national heroes," he says.

Here are patriotic songs from the Punjabi music industry that inspire and remind you what it feels to be a proud Indian!

True tribute

Asa Singh Mastana sang Baley ni Punjab di sher bachiye, Kuldeep Manak raised patriotic fervour with Vaar Baba Banda Singh, Gurdas Maan rang a bell with Lakh pardesi hoyi apna des ni bhuli da, and later with Sarbans daaniyan ve as well as Mera desh dildaaran da…stories of our national heroes have always inspired Punjabi singers. As singer Sarthi K shares, "We have grown up listening to the stories of Banda Bahadur and of heroes who laid their life for freedom; naturally as a singer I have the urge to sing praises of such heroes."

Youtube and other online music sites are flooded with old-time songs and those by some relatively new singers. However, none of them deny that such songs are few.

New chapter

Some of the relatively new singers have also contributed their bit. Although their tracks are released around Independence Day each year, they still inspire. Azadi Independence Day, a track that was released last year is a collaboration by four singers — Vinaypal Buttar, Jassi Gill, Ranjit Bawa and Harf Cheema. The song definitely calls out to the younger generation to respect the freedom that our heroes fought for. Punjabi singer Ranjit Bawa, who has also sung Mainu fir dobara bapu galan das Lahore Diyan, recalls that for him a song on desh bhagati is not bound by time. "Patriotism is a feeling that I carry in my heart and I don't need an appropriate moment to sing about it."

Another young singer Ammy Virk's Love India is a young, upbeat track wherein a boy leaves a girl he has just proposed because she shows disrespect for the National Flag. "This is so true; at least it highlights the love the newer generation has for its country, contrary to what people think."

Undeniably, whether it is the old or the new generation, songs on 'azadi' have neither been a choice nor a compulsion for any singer; it is something that they all consider a privilege. Punjabi singer-actor Ravinder Grewal's Hathi ni putt waar hundey dhan jigra guru Dasmesh da shows how our gurus sacrificed his sons for freedom. Phullan wali palki is yet another inspiring song by him. Miss Pooja's Ucchi Shaan Tiranga, Ki Ki Nahin Gujri and Nankana Sahib are some of tracks that will give you all the reasons to value freedom and respect it!

A royal salute
Musician Sushmit Sen through his solo rendition offers a rich tribute to India’s National Anthem
Amarjot Kaur

Sushmit Sen's musical tribute to India's National Anthem has a certain kind of meditative quality, which gives the song a defining edge. With an illustrious career spanning 20 years, Susmit Sen, who is the founder-member of the band Sushmit Sen Chronicles, for long has also been the lead guitarist of the band Indian Ocean.

The Indian National Anthem is a song from his upcoming album Depths of the Ocean. Performed live on Balcony TV Delhi, the Six String Salute will indefinitely touch the nationalist in you.

"Sushmit Sen is a highly respected musician known for combining Western Classical Jazz and Rock with Hindustani Classical and Folk Styles. He is known for his innovative style of playing, which is quite evident in the Six String Salute," says Jaspal Sahib, a Chandigarh-based musician. While Susmit Sen's fluid guitar lines recall Jerry Garcia and John McLaughlin at their best, he has a very distinct original style of playing.

"I am a huge fan of Sushmit Sen and there is not a better way for a musician to pay a tribute to India than to play the national anthem," says Aman Suraj, a Chandigarh-based musician with the band, Aayat. Himanshu Kappal, a Chandigarh-based musician, who also performs at the Blue Frog and Hard Rock Café, Mumbai, shares, "Sushmit Sen mentored several young musicians, collaborated with a wide array of celebrated ones and performed solo concerts across the world. His Six String Salute is the greatest salute any musician can give to his country."

The patriot within
Patriotic fervour does many things to people. If someone plans to paint her nails in tri-colour, someone else wants to take a ride to Mcleodganj in his Harley-Davidson…but the connecting thread is their love for the nation
Mona

If most of your contacts have a tricolour for their display picture on your whatsapp, you know the Independence Day is around the corner! The youth today don't shy away from wearing their love on their sleeves, even if it's love for the nation!

While changing DPs has come under fire for being just brags and little service to the nation, there are many who have stood by this and many others are making unique patriotic gestures to profess their love for their country, we explore.

Ride to freedom

Fast track: Himalayan Harley-Davidson riders’ Independence driveWhat's Independence Day if not celebrating freedom? And Himalayan Harley-Davidson riders are taking their freedom ride to Mcleodganj (Dharamshala) this year. "Last year we went to the Wagah border, and this year too we, a group of 50 plus riders, would take this two-day trip," says Navi Sidhu, chapter manager. "Occasions call for celebrations, and why waste Independence Day sitting idle at home or running around shopping in malls. We chase freedom on our bikes and tour around the country enjoying and spreading the patriotic fervour," he adds.

Neck deep

Jagdeep Joshi proudly bears the Indian map on his neck. This 25-year-old aspiring actor got the tattoo with an outline of the Indian map and saffron and green colours in it. "I would rather carry patriotic spirit than a foreign branding on my body," says Jagdeep proudly.

In fact, more and more young people are getting inked in patriotic colours. Says Rishabh Narang from Immortal Tattooz, "Today the young people are not shy of carrying the national colours on their body. I have done tattoos of Bhagat Singh, Indian flag and many other patriotic themes. And, it's not like they want to share with others every time. I once did a tattoo of an Indian map with a dot for the guy's birthplace. He got it for it was special to him."

On her toes

Suvaina Sharma, a young professional with Swami Devi Dyal Group of Institutions, Barwala, loved distributing Indian flags to friends and colleagues to mark Independence Day earlier; technology has only made things easier for her. "Don't you feel good already with most DPs to be tricolour celebrating the upcoming Independence Day," questions Suvaina. She elaborates, "Together we stand," says the girl who might or might not listen to the Prime Minster's address but has all the intentions of painting her nails saffron, white and green.

Sing along: Poorvi Kautish Midnight fervour

Poorvi Kautish is opening a Live Midnight Online Concert put together by Oxigen Wallet that would feature Farhan Akhtar, Aditi Singh, Shannon Donald too. "You know what, I sang Aye mere watan ke logon for my debut performance at Rose Festival when I was just three," says the Chandigarh girl. She will be opening the online concert in all probability with this song too. Poorvi is totally upbeat about Independence Day concert and believes that we all must exhibit our patriotic streak. "I am proud to be an Indian and the day holds special significance in life and I am glad that I will be able to do something this year on the day."

Sing along: Poorvi Kautish

Fighting mood

Michelangelo Francis with his students and ex-students has formed Soaring Eagles Moto Club. They duly go for an Independence Day ride. "We take the ride beyond just carrying Indian flags. Freedom from social evils is what we want. If we think and talk about it and people join in wouldn't that be a good thing for the nation?" This year some 50 riders would get together for the ride that will start at the Leisure Valley on Independence Day.

Love ka side effect
Bindass’ new show Pyaar Ka The End brings out the negative emotions associated with love, specially when love goes sour
Mona

Pyar tumse kuch bhi karwa sakta hai, sawal yeh hai ke tum sahi karoge ya galat — is what channel Bindass is dishing out to its young viewers through their latest show Pyaar Ka The End!

Love, lust, anger, jealousy, disappointment, hurt, rejection — are some of the emotions that young ones go through while exploring relationships some that fall within societal norm and some not. Backed by research that pegs youth's interest in relationship stories, the channel is ready to roll out the new series that explores the extent that people in love can go.

"There come weak moments in every relationship. The step that the person takes in that moment holds immense significance not only for the two in a relationship but also those around," says a channel spokesperson.

While most of the stories are built around love gone sour, the channel representatives claim that the idea is to warn the youth of being wary of not taking a wrong step. One story talks of a man in a relationship with a girl and how a flirtatious boss (female) and her advances to the man lead to his girlfriend's suicide. But yes, they promise, you will see men on the receiving end as well.

While Bindass' Emotional Atyachaar also brought out the ugly side of love, this show only goes a step ahead in the same direction and is claimed to be inspired by real instances. And, the channel merrily subscribes to its intention of 'mirroring the society'.

So, get ready to see the length that a person rejected in love can go to and more stories like this if that's what you love to watch.

The show goes on air from August 15, 7 pm.

Doc Talk
To win the race, slow down
Dr Aditya Rattan

Photo: Thinkstock In today's fast-paced world, it is aptly said that stress is nothing but a socially acceptable form of mental illness. Stress often results from mismatch between expectations and abilities. Those who are stressed are likely to be unhealthy, less motivated and less productive. However, most of the stress can be easily managed. Here are a few simple steps that will help.

n Don't burden your brain with too many things to memorise. Keep a simple organiser diary handy or use your smartphone organiser apps to note down the to-do list for the day. Plan your day ahead; keep separate time slots for work, meals, family and social calls. Keep your mind clutter-free by noting down even the smallest things like greeting someone on a birthday, anniversary or payment of bills etc.

  • Visualise your workplace as your playground and try to maintain a passion for work.
  • Try to sneak in time for a power nap in the afternoon, which may be as little as 20 minutes. Don't let others encroach upon your schedule.
  • Avoid excessive use of social networking sites during your working hours.
  • Appreciate, acknowledge and show your gratitude for every small work done by any co-worker. Don't fret over unfinished tasks as it creates a negative atmosphere and does not help any cause.
  • Don't throw your bags or push your kids away when you reach home. Your actual job starts as soon as you enter the home. The best de-stressor is spending quality time with the persons you love and care for the most.
  • De-stressing is important, but try to avoid electronic media for the purpose. A few silent deep breaths or sitting in meditation can help you de-stress faster than you can imagine. It is rightly said that the best time to relax is when you don't have time for it.
  • Prioritise your work. Plan and do the important and necessary things first. There is no harm in organising and delegating things that don't require you in person.
  • The best time to take up and finish the task in hand is now. Meticulous planning is of no help unless acted upon. Don't procrastinate.
  • Go for vacations often. Spend your weekends relaxing. Try not to bring your work home. Plan your week ahead.
  • Inculcate a hobby and spend your leisure time in doing what you enjoy the most.
  • Go with the rhythm of the nature. Dedicate your early morning for yoga, meditation or a long walk. Remain in the present moment. Listen to the chirping of the birds and enjoy the blessings of nature.
  • Pamper yourself. Go for spas; head and body massages/workout in the gym. Shopping and rewarding yourself can be a big stress-buster for some.
  • Don't get upset by the happenings around you. Remember the spiritual mantra - this too shall pass.

Don’t let them bug you
Keeping insects at bay becomes essential in this weather
Satish Narula

Why do we to need discuss insects now, at this time when plants are getting a new lease of life? Well, this is the time for insects too to be active as feeders and breeders, as plenty of food is around. It is nature. Be very vigilant and take proper measures to keep them at bay, lest they feed on your plants and you lose not only a season, but also the fruits of your hard work.

Insect pests came to this earth much before we did. In fact, we invaded their world. But then, it was evolution. Now, we choose to co-exist, and mark their presence in our bedrooms, kitchens and lawns. They may be present in visible or invisible form. Whatever may be the case, the crawling or flying creatures are annoying and irritating, mostly. There are friendly insects too, but for some, an insect is an insect and has to be out of sight!

Yes, they have to be out and away at safe range. Many insects like mosquitoes, lice, houseflies, ticks and roaches are known to cause some of the most deadly diseases. Others like beetles, butterflies, moths, bugs and hoppers devour plants and finish the crops in no time. Not only this, insects like aphids, thrips are known to spread some deadly diseases in plants besides devitalising them. Insects like borer and butterfly larvae invade fruits and render them unfit for consumption.

The insects are identified by their physical presence or the damage caused by them as symptoms. However, nature has given them powers to camouflage in one or the other form, to be able to escape our sight. They may live inside the fruit or the tree, may change colour to merge with the surrounding environment, may hide in the crevices of the tree trunk, live on the underside of the leaves or even hide in soil. They may also create artificial covering over their body to be out of direct vision. We may see the damage caused, but not the insects, as they either withdraw to safety or are nocturnal in feeding. Nature has given them the power to live through tough times and also to multiply in comfortable numbers in no time!

It is very important to understand their nature of life cycle to control them. Not at any stage of their development can they be controlled or their intensity be contained. Studies have been made and a particular stage of development has been identified when these can be controlled effectively. But, how to identify the attack of insects in plants and how to control them is a big question for a layman. (To be continued)

Flavours from the Far East

Bringing together flavours from the streets of Asia — Indonesia, Korea, China, Hongkong and Thailand - is Mainland China's new food festival, Asia Kitchen Festival. The festival tactfully combines the flavours of the Far East, in dishes like Corn Cakes in Sweet Chilli Sauce (Thai), Dynamite Tofu (Hongkong), Garlic Shrimps (China), Chicken Kaprao (Thai), Barbequed Pepper Chicken (Korea) and Java Grilled Fish with Sambal Salsa (Indonesia).

The highlight of the festival, however, remains the variety of rice and noodles on offer—Lemon Grass Fried Rice, Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice) and Mee Goreng (Indonesian fried noodles). For mains, besides the regular Thai Red and Thai Green Curries, they also have the Soya Bean Kaprao on offer. The festival carries on through the month of August at Mailand China, Sector 26, Chandigarh. Meal for two in the fest costs Rs 800 (approximately). — TNS

Remembering the Yahoo star
Hindi cinema lost the matinee idol Shammi Kapoor on August 14 three years back. We chronicle the life and times of the great star...

Shammi Kapoor belonged to the 60's, and was loved along with Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard. He portrayed the urban debonair in movies that were light compared to wholesome family dramas depicting joy and sorrow. Shammi preferred acting in less cumbersome dramas and exploited lighter and easy-to-watch movies filled with comedy, romance and, above all, the happy Hindi movie songs that remain unrivalled to date.

Shammi Kapoor's first major break came with Nasir Husain's Dil Deke Dekho where he played the role of a young musician with debutant Asha Parekh. His success reached heights with China Town, followed by his first colour film, Junglee, released in 1961, which proved a blockbuster hit. The song from this film, Yahoo Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe became an anthem for young romantics all over the country. His Western-style garb of leather jacket and T-shirt, and catchy, upbeat musical numbers cemented his appeal amongst teenage film-goers.

Kashmir Ki Kali had the star with seducing green eyes and fair complexion opposite a raw Sharmila Tagore in her maiden film role. He paired with ravishing Saira Banu in Junglee, the performance-conscious Nutan in Laat Sahab, debutant Rajshree in Budtameez and Sadhana in Rajkumar. Alongside, he acted with Kalpana in Professor. Shammi Kapoor's name guaranteed success, no wonder many heroines made their debut in films starring the Yahoo star.

After being the nonchalant and charming matinee idol who teased so many belles for a whole decade, Shammi Kapoor grew more serious by acting in the hard hitting Bramachari (1969) which won him the Filmfare award.

Shammi's last film in the main lead was Andaz (1971). In 1974, he moved to character roles with Zameer. He also directed the unsuccessful Manoranjan in 1975. His dance moves, the amorous looks and the nonchalance of an evergreen hero made the man, Shammi Kapoor.

Dimple adores Deepika

Dimple Kapadia has worked with Deepika Padukone in Cocktail and again in Finding Fanny. She treats her like a daughter. Deepika talks about their equation and more.

Equation with Dimple Ji

What I feel for Dimple Ji and my equation with her, I can't describe it in words. She took me for lunch and shopping while we were shooting for Cocktail. She pampers me and spoils me. She treats me like her daughter.

Different film

I will not call Finding Fanny a bold film, it's a different film. When I saw the promos first, I found it to be different. It's refreshing, it's quirky and cool. I completely enjoyed being part of the film as I also got to speak in my mother tongue — Konkani. It's a nice feeling when you have a command over your language. We are used to shooting in Hindi, but English was a different experience altogether.

Learning curve

I feel honoured to share screen space with veterans such as Dimpleji, Naseer saab, Pankaji together at this point in my career and it is an even bigger achievement for Arjun because this is just his fifth film or so. We got to learn so much from them as human beings and as actors.

A new beginning

Blessed girl: Shraddha Kapoor
Blessed girl: Shraddha Kapoor

Ganesh Chaturthi will be more special for the young actress, Shraddha Kapoor this year. The actress will be personally looking into all the preparations of this big occasion. From booking the idol of Ganesha to planning the decorations, speaking to the decorators and inviting friends and family home, the actress is doing all.

A source close to Shraddha shares, "Both Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain have been huge successes and Shraddha is very happy with the way things are going. She wants to do all that she can personally do for the festival."

Being a half Maharashtrian, since childhood she has grown up around the festivities. It is family time for them as the entire family comes together and celebrates it. When contacted Shraddha Kapoor, she said, "Ganesh Chaturthi is very special for my entire family. I will be personally looking into all the preparations. It has been a great year for me and I am thankful for it all. I feel so blessed."

Beauties from around the world

Call it an obsession with fair skin or a hunt for exotic women on foreign shores, Bollywood has been blessed with an influx of beauties from around the globe. Many have been inspired by the success of Katrina Kaif, who, let’s face it, is not Indian. We take a look at some of these beauties and admire them.

Model way

Jacqueline Fernandez came to India as a model years ago and made her debut in Aladdin. After Murder 2, there was no looking back. She has the biggest blockbuster of her career in Kick and will go places from here. She has a Malaysian mother, a Sri Lankan father and was raised in Bahrain.

Dancing diva

American dancer Lauren Gottlieb made it big in India after she participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6. Post that, she was seen playing the lead female role in the 2013 Indian dance film ABCD: Any Body Can Dance. Now she will be seen in the sequel with Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor. She is not only good-looking but also a great dancer.

Top slot

Amy Jackson is a gorgeous and sexy British import who debuted in Ek Tha Deewana and even dated Prateik Babbar. She is known for a couple of topless shoots and is now doing a South Indian film with Ram Charan.

Item girl

Maryam Zakaria is often remembered as the girl from the Dil Mera Muft Ka song. Her moves overshadowed Kareena's and soon she started to receive acting proposals. Although this Iranian-Swede actress hasn't been seen in a Bollywood film since Grand Masti, she recently shot an item song for a Tamil film with Surya.

March ahead

Lisa Haydon is Indian-Australian and has been raised in India and Australia. After taking the modelling world by storm, the sultry chick made her debut in Aisha and had a role in Rascals too. She made waves with her hippie turn in Queen and there has been no looking back since.

Heady cocktail

Evelyn Sharma is an Indo-German cocktail and is known for her pretty face and fabulous figure. She has been seen in side roles in movies like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Main Tera Hero and is quite a sex icon already.

Star appeal

Nargis Fakhri made her debut in Rockstar and has been linked with a bevy of pretty boys like Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor and the not-pretty Uday Chopra who was lattoo over her. Apparently, they were dating. She has been mostly panned for her acting, but her beauty and sex appeal are unmatched. She was last seen in Devil, the item song in Kick and has done well in Main Tera Hero and Madras Cafe.

Playing a tough cop

Eijaz Khan is glad to have bagged the role of a tough cop in Life Ok's show Laut Aau Trisha. He talks about his role, his focus in career and more.

What are the reasons for doing Laut Aau Trisha?

I do things that I enjoy. That is the most important factor in my life. What I like the most in this character is the fact that there are certain shades that are like me. I am playing a very strict and tough cop who has a case to solve. He only does things according to his own conditions.

We heard you get bored easily?

Yes, this is true. For me, mediocrity is a crime. If something is going wrong then I change my track or I extract myself from the situation. I am hitting 38 and I am not rushing. As an actor we are so lost in thinking what others are thinking about us. I don't want to fall in that trap.

Is there any pressure from your family to get settled in life?

Marriage is like sky-diving; once you take the plunge you have to hit the rock bottom and I do sky diving professionally!

What are you focused on right now as an actor?

I want to work with capable people in my career. I will be working for another 12 years at the most and after that I will do farming.

How did you meet your girlfriend Natalie?

We met four years ago while returning from Canada. At the airport she forgot her bag and I returned it to her. Someone in the flight told her that I was an actor. We got to know each other slowly. She is young and a very talented soprano singer. She stays in Mumbai and Canada. I know her parents and family very well. Long-distance relationship is tough because it requires a different level of understanding.

What has the industry taught you in this last decade?

The industry has taught me 'what not' to say in front of people. I said something that cost me dearly in the past. I am very positive and happy right now. — HRM
