High security plates: Three extension counters closed
Ludhiana, August 12
Following complaints of overcharging, the District Transport Officer, Ludhiana, has closed down all the three extension counters of the company, which has been awarded the work of issuing high security registration number plates in Ludhiana district. Now, these plates are issued only at the District Transport Office, Ludhiana.

Fogging claims reek of scam
Ludhiana, August 12
More than Rs 40 lakh per month (especially during the rainy season) is spent on fogging in the city, still residents and the councillors complain they hardly see fogging being done in their respective areas. In fact, many councillors said despite our repeated requests, fogging in their wards was not done even fortnightly while the inspectors concerned regularly claimed expenses on petrol and diesel.

ATP held taking 1.25 lakh bribe

The vigilance bureau arrested Banke Bihari, Assistant Town Planner of Zone-C, Municipal Corporation, while taking a bribe of Rs 1.25 lakh here today. He was arrested following a complaint made by Baljit Rai, a resident of Shimlapuri.

Inmate hangs self in jail hospital 
Ludhiana, August 12
A 57-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself from the grill of a bathroom at the Central Jail early morning today. The deceased has been identified as Surjit Singh, a resident of Dasuya in Hoshiarpur district. According to the jail authorities, the deceased had been suffering from a mental illness.

Man murdered over illicit relations 
Ludhiana, August 12
In a suspected case of illicit relations, a father and son murdered a person at Jagdish Colony in the Dhandari Kalan area last night.

Snatchers target two in Industrial City
Ludhiana, August 12
Two snatching incidents have been reported in the past 24 hours here. In the first incident, four persons, who were in inebriated condition, snatched Rs 8,500 from a man at Durgapuri area after stabbing him.

Kisan Club celebrates Teej at Dalla

The women wing of Punjab Agricultural University’s Kisan Club celebrated Teej at Babe Ki Jheel in Dalla village near Jagraon. Around 60 members of the club, lead by in charge Dr Rupinder Kaur, celebrated the festival with fervor along with the village women. The club members sang folk songs and performed giddha. They also taught the village women recipes of various food items.

Children celebrate Teej at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana on Tuesday. Ludhiana: The Montessori wing of Bal Bharati Public School celebrated Janmashtami to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. Students of pre-nursery, Mont-I and Mont-II showered love on “Bal Gopal” through a colourful presentation of dances and melodies. The students of pre-nursery depicted Krishna’s love for “Maiya Yashoda” and “Gopis” a dance performance on “Pyara Kanhaiya”.

Tricycles and sewing machines will be given to the poor.

International Youth Day
Ludhiana: International Youth Day was celebrated at DAV College, Phillaur, under the aegis of the Department of Youth Services and National Service Scheme. Addressing the students, principal SK Mahajan urged the students to make a difference by taking part in community service. He said only the youth could weed out all evils that are plaguing society. He also appealed to the students to come forward for the noble cause of blood donation. The day marked the beginning of weeklong celebrations. Prof SP Singh informed the students about the schedule and administered the oath to them.

Youth’s body found in well
Samrala, August 12
A youth of a nearby village was allegedly murdered by his two companions last night. The deceased has been identified as Amarjit Singh (25), a resident of Lalouri Klan village near here. The mutilated body of the youth was recovered from a well of the village.

2 booked for rape bid
Ludhiana, August 12
The police have booked two persons in an attempt to rape case. The victim told the police that Gora, along with his friend, came to meet her father at her place in Jodhan Mansooran village yesterday.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has decided to set up an academy for athletics with special centres for middle and long distance runners. The competition-cum-selection trials for the purpose will be held at Guru Nanak Stadium on August 19 and 20.

Kundan Vidya Mandir (KVM), Civil Lines, trounced SDP Om Parkash Gupta Senior Secondary School by eight wickets to emerge champions in the Ludhiana Schools Cricket Zonal Tournament (U-17) organised by the Punjab Education Department at SDP College today.
