NEW DELHI: A landmark Bill to overturn the collegium system was on Wednesday a step short of becoming the law, with the Lok Sabha approving it amid government's assertion that the measure was aimed at ensuring that only meritorious people are selected as judges to the higher courts.

For a second time in the history of the Himachal Vidhan Sabha, the House was today adjourned sine die. Such a situation had last arisen in 1980. The adjournment came following an impasse in the Assembly for the fifth consecutive day, leading to acrimonious exchanges between Congress and BJP legislators.
