Woman dies, husband critical in hit-and-run

Panchkula, August 10
A woman died while her husband was critically injured when the bike they were travelling on was hit by an unknown vehicle near Surajpur at 11.30 pm today. The accused sped away with the vehicle after hitting the bike.

The duo was shifted to the General Hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula. While the woman was declared brought dead, her husband was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.

The man, Inder Pal, was identified from his driving licence found in his pocket. However, the identity of the deceased could not be ascertained. At Panchkula hospital, Inder Pal fell unconscious before he could tell his wife's name. The victims are residents of Bapu Dham Colony, Chandigarh.

The police reached the hospital and began investigations. No case was registered till the filing of the report. — TNS

On the opening day of the Inter-School Handball Championship for Boys (U-19), Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 23, beat IS Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, (16-5) at the handball courts of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, here today.

In other matches of the same category, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, beat AKSIPS School, Sector 41, (37-26). DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, (22-16).

In the girls’ (U-19) event, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, (22-8) and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, (12-9).

New Public School cagers excel

In the first match of the Inter-School Basketball Championship for Boys (U-14), New Public School, Sector 18, defeated Vivek High School, Sector 38, (34-20), while cagers of SGHMS-38 defeated Sri Aurbindo School, Sector 27, (17-04). Bhavan Vidyalya School, Sector 27, defeated St Peter School, Sector 37, (27-14).

In the last match, St Joseph School, Sector 44, defeated Strawberry Fields School, Sector 26, (22-11). In the girls’ (U-14) category, St Annes School, Sector 32, beat SGHSS-38, (18-14), Gurukul Global School, Mani Majra, defeated Sacred Heart School, (11-06), Carmel Convent School beat GNPS-36, (14-8), and Strawberry Fields School beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, (21-6).

New Public, St Stephen’s schools to clash for title

Cagers of New Public School, Sector 18, defeated Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, while St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, beat St John’s School, Sector 26, in the ongoing Br. Kyle Basketball Tournament, being held at St John’s School, Sector 45. Both winning teams qualified for the title clash.

In the first match, New Public School, Sector 18, defeated Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, (43-17). Leading the score chart, Ajmer and Parvesh ensured their team’s win by contributing 10 points each. Amit also chipped in with 7 baskets to extend the lead. For Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, Jaskaran scored seven points, while Gurjeet scored six points to reduce the margin.

In the second match, St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, beat St John’s School, Sector 26, (19-10). For the winning side, Hemant claimed 10 points, whereas Jagjit gathered 6 points. For the losing side, Himanshu and Nirbhai scored 4 points each.

In the quarterfinal matches, the team of St Anne’s School, Sector 32, beat St John’s School, Sector 26, (35-24).

For the winning side, Aryan led the day by contributing 20 baskets, whereas his counterpart Sargun gathered 6 points. For the host side, Abhimanyu and Nirbhai contributed 8 points each.

In the second match, Yadvindra Public School, Mohali, beat DAV Public School, Sector 8, (30-28). For the winning side, Rahil (9 points) and Jaskaran (8 points) gathered maximum points. For DAV School, Shaurya gathered maximum 15 points, while Karan contributed 9 points.

In the third match, New Public School, Sector 18, beat Sri Aurobindo School, Sector 27, (28-12), with Amit gathering 15 points and Sandeep collecting 6 points. For the losing side, Karan and Parneet collected 4 points each.

In the fourth match, St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, defeated Chitkara School, Sector 25, (32-11). For the winning side, Vaibhav ensured his team’s win by securing 11 points, while Binwat contributed 7 points. For the losing side, Divansh alone gathered 11 points to reduce the margin.

Karandeep, Aadil claim golf titles

Golfers Karandeep Kochhar and Aadil Bedi bagged the titles of Category A and Category B longest drive event, respectively, during the Chandigarh Golf Club Junior Championship, played at the Golf Club greens here today.

In the boys’ category A, Karandeep Kochhar and Jaiveer Singh both shot the best scores of the day, 3 over 75.

However in the decider play off, Karandeep got the better of his rival and claimed the championship. Jaiveer Singh claimed the runners-up position, while Manak Thakur finished second runners-up in the same category.

In the girls’ category A, Ashi Jain won the title with a gross score of 95, while Aakarshan Sandhu finished runners-up in the same category.

In the boys’ category B, Aadil Bedi claimed the title, while Amrit Lal claimed the runners-up position and Chanmaya Mahajan remained at the second runners-up position.

In the girls’ category B, Lakhmehar Pardesi and Mokshita Sharma claimed top two positions. Around 90 participants battled out for the top honors.

Invitation cricket tourney from Aug 28

Chandigarh, August 10
The 4th edition of the All-India Invitation Cricket Tournament for Boys (U-19) will be held from August 28 to September 9 at cricket grounds of Chandigarh, Mohali and Patiala.

The tournament will be held under the auspices of the Punjab Cricket Association. The competition has been preponed following changes in the interstate matches, scheduled to be held from October 5.

Sushil Kapoor, director of the tournament, said eight state teams had confirmed their participation. The participating teams had been divided into two pools.

Pool A comprises host Punjab, Vidarbha, Andhra Pradesh and Assam, while Pool B includes Himachal Pradesh, Baroda, Madhya Pradesh and Bengal.

The matches of Pool A will be held at Dhruv Pandove Stadium, Patiala, and DMW Ground, Patiala, while Pool B matches will be played at cricket stadiums of Sector 16, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, and Yadavindra Public School, Mohali. The league matches will be of two days’ duration, while the final will remain a 4-day affair from September 6 to 9 at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium, Patiala.

All league matches will be of two days’ duration and the first innings of each team will be restricted to 100 overs (6.40-hr play per day to complete the slotted overs). The winning team will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a winner’s trophy, whereas the runners-up team will get Rs 50,000 and a trophy.
