Sabar Ali Rape Case
Accused’s son, doc killed child: Victim

In a new twist to the Sabar Ali rape case, the rape victim reached the Pinjore police station last night with her deceased one-month-old baby girl alleging, “The accused’s son in connivance with a Baddi-based doctor gave a medicine that killed my child.”

The police have lodged a Zero FIR against the accused’s son, Lalu, and the doctor and sent it to the police station in Baddi. The case has been lodged under Section 304A (death due to negligence), and criminal conspiracy.

Accused Sabar Ali is lodged in a jail since June 6.

The victim’s father, in his complaint submitted in June this year, had alleged, “The landlord, Ali, had been raping my daughter since last year and threatening her that he would throw us out of the house if she disclosed the incident to anyone.”

The fact came to light when the minor victim suffered acute stomach ache and the family took her to the doctor. The doctor then stated that the girl was in her sixth month of pregnancy.

Following this, the police on July 19, had sought the DNA samples of the accused and sent it to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Madhuban, Karnal.

The victim later delivered a baby girl.

Discussing the case, inspector Jangsher Singh, Station House Officer, Pinjore police station, said, “The victim said her mother had gone with the child to a Baddi-based doctor for a check up where the accused’s son was already present. The child was given a medicine at 2 pm and she died thereafter.”

Zero FIR
Zero FIRs are registered on the basis of statement of a person at any police station irrespective of the jurisdiction. The investigation is then handed over to the police station concerned.

Conman held for duping people

The Cyber Crime Cell of the UT police today arrested Srikant Shekhawat, a resident of Surat in Gujarat, in a case of impersonation, cheating and under various sections of the IT Act for allegedly duping a Rajasthan-based man of Rs 5 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad.

The accused’s actual name is Sachin Bhagmal Bhai Shah. He duped people with fake names such as Aditya Sanghvir, Rajvir Mishra, Rajat and Srikant Shekhawat.

He was first arrested in a brawl case with the complainant, Mustaq Ghosh, in Sector 42 on August 5 wherein he disclosed his name as Aditya Sanghvir. He was later released on bail.

Police said through an app on his phone — VOIP — the accused used to call clients and claim that he was calling from abroad. “The phone app showed his location in a foreign country,” said the police.

The accused called Mustaq by posing as Srikant Shekhawat and stated that he was calling from abroad though he was at village Attawa in Sector 42. He took Rs 5 lakh from Mustaq.

Mustaq remained ignorant about the accused’s actual name.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered.

Youth dies of bullet injuries

Mustaq Ali, a resident Bhabhat village, who sustained bullet injuries in a gang war, at Barara near Ambala, last evening, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the PGI in Chandigarh, this morning.

Mustaq Ali, member of a Zirakpur-based notorious BR gang, was admitted to the PGI, along with his aide Mohit. Both of them sustained bullet injuries in a gang war with members of the WiFi gang of Barwala, last evening. Condition of Mohit was said to be critical.

Sources in the police revealed that members of the WiFi gang armed with swords, daggers, batons, sticks and other deadly weapons entered into a barber’s shop on Thursday noon and inquired about the BR gang. They even fired shots in air and ransacked the shop, owned by Raj Kumar.

Members of both the gangs had an encounter later and after settling the things, the WiFi gang dispersed from the scene.

Receiving information, Arvind Kumar, SHO Chandimandir, along with his team visited the crime scene and a case was registered in this regard at Barwala police post.

After reporting the matter to the police, Mustaq, Mohit, Ashok and their aides chased the WiFi gang and intercepted its members on the Barara highway.

Here the WiFi group retaliated and opened fire at the chasers leaving them injured.

The injured were rushed to MM Hospital, Mullana, from where Mustaq and Mohit were referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, the police said. Members of the WiFi group, however, managed to flee the spot.

The Ambala police have confiscated three vehicles involved in the shooting incident and seized weapons.

Anil Sharma, SP, Dera Bassi, claimed that the Haryana police have registered cases at Ambala and Barwala.

22-year-old electrocuted

Chandigarh, August 8
A 22-year-old worker was electrocuted to death while working in a factory at the Industrial Area last evening. The factory owner has been booked on the charges of causing death due to negligence. The victim, Sonu of Hallo Majra, was a welder at the engineering plant of Suresh Kumar.

Sonu was working at the plant when he got electrocuted. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. Victim’s relative Dev Nath said he got electrocuted due to negligence of the factory owner. On Nath’s statement, a case was registered. — TNS

UT Open Tennis Tournament
Nihit, Aarushi lift trophies

Local tennis players Nihit Rawal and Aarushi registered a win, in their respective category, on the concluding day of the UT Open Tennis Tournament for boys and girls, being held here today.

In a well settled final of the boys’ category, Nihit Rawal beat Ranjeet Singh. Nihit lost the first set 3-6 but won the second set 7-5. The third set went to tie-breaker, Nihit kept his cool and managed to claim the title winning the final set decider 7-6(2). In the hard line match, Kabirman Rai beat Rohit Beniwal in straight games 5-3 and 4-2 to attain the third place. In the final match of the girls’ category, Aarushi Kakkar outclassed Nikita Bishnoi in straight sets. She defeated Nikita 6-3 and 6-3. In the match to attain third place, Gaytri claimed the spot defeating her opponent Prabhneet 4-0 and 4-0. In the final of boys’ (doubles) category, pair of Ranjit and Rohit beat Manjot and Kabirman Rai 6-3 and 6-3 to claim the title.

On other hand, Himanshu and Ritiwik defeated Parveen and Gautam Mittal 4-2 and 4-1, to claim third place. Pair of Nikita Bishnoi and Aarushi Kakkar won the girls’ (doubles) title defeating Tanya Batra and Gaytri 6-2 and 6-2. The pair of Shamita Yadav and Prabhneet outclassed Garima and Aditya 4-0 and 4-2 to claim the third place.

The host team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, marched ahead in the semifinals of the boys’ (U-14) category, during the ongoing inter-school baseball championship for boys and girls, being held here today.

In the quarterfinals, the host team defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, by a marginal score of 4-3 while in the second quarterfinal match Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, 5-4. In the last two quarterfinals, St. Anne’s School, Sector 32, beat Government High School, Sector 11, 1-0 while Government Model High School, Sector 37, registered a 4-3 victory over Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37.

In the matches of boys’ (U-17 years) category, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, marched ahead beating Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, 1-0. Government Model High School, Sector 39, blanked Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, 7-0. In other matches of the same category, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 15 2-1. Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, beat Government High School, Sector 11, 2-0. The winning side registered an impressive 44-23 win over the opponents. In the second match, Yadvindra Public School, Mohali, beat Sri Aurobindo School, 28-12 while St. Stephen’s School, Sector 44, beat St Anne’s School, Sector 32, 35-25.

In the last match, host team St. John’s High School, Sector 26, overpowered Chitkara School Sector 45 and won the game 25-8. On Saturday, DAV Public School will face YPS Mohali, New Public School will play against Sri Aurobindo School, St Stephen’s School will take over Chitkara and St Anne’s School will clash with St John’s High School.

CCA to hold selection trials

The Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA), affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association, will conduct selection trials to shortlist the senior cricket team of the city at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36.

The trials will be conducted on August 10 (4 pm) and the selected team will participate in the one- day All India Cricket Tournament to be organised by the Punjab Cricket Association.

1st Chandigarh Ranking Table Tennis Tournament
Ishan, Vasundhra lift TT titles

Ishan Kapoor of DAV Public School, Sector 8, and Vasundhra, a student of Gurukul Global School, Manimajra, lifted the title of boys’ (U-12) and girls’ (U-12), respectively, of the 1st Chandigarh Ranking Table Tennis Tournament being played at Trishakti Temple Hall in Sector 49 here. The tournament was organised under the aegis of Chandigarh Table Tennis Association and conducted by Layers Table Tennis Club.

In the final of boys’ (U-12 years), Ishan Kapoor beat Krish Gupta of St John’s School, Sector 26, 3-1. In a well contested match, Ishan lost the first set 16-18. However, he bounced back strongly at 11-7, 11-8 and 11-8 in back to back games. In a closely contested girls’ (U-12 years) final, Vasundhra beat Deevanshi of St Kabir School, Sector 26, 3-2. Vasundhra lost the initial set 4-11 but won the second set 11-8. Trying to maintain her pace Vasundhra won the third set 16-14 but Deevanshi responded strongly in the next set and won 8-11. In the last set, Vasundhra registered win 11-6.

Basketball tourney from August 11

Vivek High School, Mohali, will host the Sardar Bhagwant Singh Memorial Inter-School Basketball Tournament from August 11. The tournament will be organised in the boys and girls (U-14 and U-16 years) category. A total of 38 teams from various schools including Vivek High School, YPS, The Millennium School, Shivalik Public School, Shishu Niketan, Doon International, Manav Mangal, Saupins School, Swami Ram Tirtha School, St Xavier’s School, Infant Jesus Convent School, St Stephan’s School, Lawrence Public School, The British School, St Soldier’s School and Gurukul World School have confirmed their entry.

On the opening day, Shivalik Public School will face Lawrence Public School in the boys’ (U-14 years) category while Infant Jesus School will take on St Xavier’s in the girls’ (U-14 years) category.
