Chandigarh, July 23
In a fatal accident, a scooterist died after he was hit by a truck this morning. The victim, who was 31-year-old, was hit by the truck near traffic lights at Colony Number 5.

The police said that the incident occurred during the wee hours when the victim identified as Prashant Kumar was returning to his residence.Prashant was riding his two-wheeler (CH-01-AD-2062) when he was hit by the truck.

The victim was rushed to Sector 32 GMCH by the police. The passersby informed the police after they noticed him lying in a pool of blood.

Prashant Kumar was a resident of Indira Colony at Mani Majra and was working with a private firm in Mohali. The accused truck driver, Alwa Vishav Karma, a resident of Sector 26, was arrested in the case of causing death due to negligence under Section 304 A of the IPC.

City golfer Feroz Singh Garewal, who has been in his peak form this session, is all set to represent the country in the top-three amateur golf tournaments scheduled within the next two months.

Feroz will be representing the country in the 2nd Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, and will also play the Asia Junior Team Championship in Gunsan, Korea in August this year. In September, he will be representing the country in the Asian Games at Incheon, Korea, and the World Amateur Team Golf Championship at Karuizawa in Japan.

In the recently held Asian Games trials, Feroz had notched top spot.

Elated with his selection and confident about his present form, Garewal said, “The selection for all the major tournaments has lifted my morale and confidence. The hard work that I have put in to reach this position has finally showed the results.”

The 17-year-old city lad is currently the leader in the Indian Golf Union Order of Merit in Category A and B combined.

The young golfer has also been a part of the four-member Indian contingent which finished fifth in the Asian Junior Golf Championship in Korea, last year.

On the chances of India winning a medal in the upcoming tournament in Korea, he said, “I have played in Korea last year in October and I am familiar with the windy conditions prevalent there. Our team is really good and has been practicing hard. So, I think our chances of winning a medal are bright.”

Feroz further stated that last year he clinched a title in the Jakarta World Junior Championship in July and he had finished second in five tournaments. This year, he won the Northern Amateur Junior Golf Championship held at the ITC, Manesar, Gurgoan, in March.

“I did not participate in any tournament in May and June for I had been focusing on improving on my short games. Last year, I changed my swing and it has worked out for me since then,” said the young achiever.

While on his preparation for the Youth Olympics, he said, “It will be my maiden tournament in China. I am very excited about it. Earlier, I have played in countries including Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. So, I have an idea about the weather conditions prevalent there.”

The young golfer, who has been training for over six hours daily at the golf course and two hours in the gym, credited his trainer Sagar Dhiwan and coach Jesse Grewal for his form and selection.

The Chandigarh Senior State Netball Championship of Boys and Girls for 4th St Soldier Netball Trophy will be organised under the auspices of the Netball Association of Chandigarh (regd.), affiliated to the Netball Federation of India (regd.), at St Soldier International School, Sector 28-B, Chandigarh.

The Chandigarh East District Netball Association said the championship will be organised from August 6 to 8.

The players are advised to report for the matches at 8.30 am on the school premises.

They further added that for the senior group there is no age limit. Anyone can participate in the group, provided he is a resident of Chandigarh or is studying in Chandigarh.

Any player born on or after January 1, 2000, is eligible to take part in the junior group.

The general secretary, Anand Singh Rawat, said entry forms of the players will be duly verified. After the last date of entry, no one will be entertained, said Rawat.

Fixture can be collected on August 5 at 5 pm from the reception of St Soldier International School, Sector 28-D.
