Govt upgrades 3 high schools

Dera Bassi, July 21
The Punjab Government has upgraded three government high schools to senior secondary level. The government has also issued a notification in this regard.

The posts of teaching and non-teaching staff have also been approved and sanctioned for the upgraded schools which include Government Senior Secondary School, Dera Bassi; Government Senior Secondary School for Girls, Lalru; and Government Senior Secondary School, Lohgarh, Zirakpur from the current academic session. The government has also sanctioned posts for the schools.

The newly upgraded Government High School, Dera Bassi, has been renamed as Gurnam Singh Saini Government Senior Secondary School, Dera Bassi.

Students who earlier had to travel miles to attend Class XI and XII at government senior secondary schools located in Mubarikpur and Samgoli had a sigh of relief.

College teachers up in arms, suspend work

Kalka, July 21
Anguished over the lethargic attitude of state government towards the various pending demands, the Teachers of Government Post Graduate College, Kalka, today suspended work between 9 am to 2:30 pm. The work remained suspended in the 160 Government Colleges throughout Haryana on the call of the Haryana Government College Teachers Association (HGCTA). Prof Sushil Kumar, State Joint Secretary of HGCTA said the teachers staged a dharna at the main gate of college premises and raised anti-government slogans.

Notably, the teachers of the Government College had started the agitation on July 16.

Dr Sandeep Kandwal, President, and Ram Partap, General Secretary, HGCTA, said the HGCTA has already submitted the demand charter of the association to CM Hooda and other officials.

Police get accused’s remand for another day

Chandigarh, July 21
The Chandigarh Police on Monday procured another day’s remand of Karan Pawar, who allegedly murdered investment agent Krishan Kumar.

Karan was arrested on Saturday and the police is questioning him to know the role of his accomplices in the crime. Police officials said they were investigating how the murder was planned and executed.

The deceased’s family members had raised a suspicion that there was involvement of more than one person in the crime.

The probe into the case is on and the police are questioning the suspects to establish if more than one person was involved in the murder.

SSC exam: Two held for impersonation

Chandigarh, July 21
The police have arrested two persons on the charge of impersonation during a Staff Selection Commission exam held on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Parneet Bhasin of Sonepat, was taking the exam in place of Tushkar Kukreja at Government High School in Sector 24 here.

Police sources said Bhasin had come to appear in the Tier-I of the Combined Graduate-Level Exam of Staff Selection Commission.

Bhasin was caught when the invigilator found the picture on the roll number of the accused was different. The invigilator informed the police.

During questioning, Bhasin disclosed the name of the candidate who was to originally appear in the examination. Both Bhasin and Tushar Kukreja were arrested from the school. Kukreja was waiting for Bhasin outside the exam centre.

A case has been registered against the duo at the Sector 11 police station.

Fake designer clothes worth Rs 2 crore seized

The Chandigarh Police today raided three garments shops in Sector 20 and seized fake designer clothes worth around Rs two crore.

Deputy Suprintendent of Police (Crime) Jagbir Singh said they had received a complaint that fake-branded clothes were being sold in the shops
following which a raid along with the representatives of the garment
company was conducted at Nirmala Garments, Anita Garments and Gulzar Exports. “Clothes of brands, including Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Diesel, Lacoste, Arrow, Van Heusen etc were recovered from the shops which were sold illegally”, the Deputy Suprintendent of Police stated.

The Deputy Suprintendent of Police further said that the cost of the clothes is somewhere around Rs two crore.

A case under Sections of the Copy Right Act and the Trade Mark Act has been registered against the shop owners who were arrested and later released on bail. .

World University Badminton Championship
Two PU boys in Indian squad

Chandigarh, July 21
Shuttlers Rupinder and Kawaldeep of Panjab University will participate in the World University Badminton Championship to be held in Spain from July 23 to 29.

The badminton team representing Indian universities left for the championship today.

The preparatory camp for 11 players including six boys and five girls was conducted at PU badminton Hall from July 6 to 21 under the supervision of badminton coaches Surinder Mahajan and Narinder Singh.

The women’s team members are Pooja Mudliar and Poornima of Osmania University; Ria Pilay and Vallari Namdev of Mumbai university and Sara Naqvi of Aligarh University.

The men’s team members include Rupinder Singh and Kawaldeep Singh of Panjab university, Dilsahd, Aswin Paul and Shayam Parsad of MG University, Kottyam, Kerala and Ketan Chahal of MDU Rohtak.

City cycling assn releases calendar

Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association today held its executive committee meeting at Punjab Bhawan, Sector 3, under the chairmanship of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa to release its annual events calendar .

Members of the association on-record placed the appointment of Parminder Singh Dhindsa as vice-president of IOA and Asian Cycling Confederation.

The committee also decided to approach the Sports Department to purchase cycling equipment and construct the cycling velodrome and to make a request to appoint a cycling coach as there is no coach for the sport from the past four years.

The association members claimed that there would be two national-level competitions planned along with the Chandigarh Cyclothon.

Saupin’s-32 sail into semifinals

Eves of Saupin’s School, Sector 32, defeated Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, today in the quarter-finals of the Under-17 Pre- Subrito International Football Tournament being held at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector-22.

The event is being organised by the Chandigarh Education Department.

Saupin’s won the match by a score of 3-0. The three goals were scored by Inderpreet, Pranjal and Tanya.

In the semi-finals to be held on July 23, Saupin’s- 32 will face St Soldier School.

Badminton tourney from July 25

The 8th Ashwani Gupta Memorial District Badminton Championship Panchkula will be held from July 25 to 27 at the badminton hall, Sports Complex, Sector 3, Panchkula.

The organisers stated that during the championship events of U-10,U-13,U-15,U-17,U 19, men, women and veterans +35,+40,+45+50 and +55 (singles and doubles ) will be conducted. The last date for entries is July 24. — TNS
