Fast-track
benefits
Feasting and fasting both have been significant in our religious ceremonies cutting across different cultures and religions. While old practices had certain logic behind it, over the period of time, many rituals have lost their significance.
Some of us observe fasts sticking to our religious moorings and others detox. Since too much of anything is bad; we find the middle path for you. Diet and nutrition consultant Madhu Sharma finds religious fastings a welcome break for body if done once in a while. Similarly detox diets give better results when done in short durations; if carried on for too long, they are more harmful for health than good. "It's all very well to observe religious fasts. When looking from health point of view, there are two things largely - one, choose what you eat wisely, and two, make sure you are healthy enough to undertake the fast," says Madhu. While a healthy body can do longish fasts like navratras or rozas, many nutritionists get queries after few days of fasting. "Many a times I have people asking me on how did they gain weight after fasting this long," shares Aditi Mehrotra, a diet consultant. "Severe fasting, not having anything for long hours, sends the body in a state of shock and expecting more shock the body starts to store fat leading to weight gain," she adds. The aftereffects could be far worse than plain weight gain in case of diabetic or people with severe acidity or ulcers, points out Madhu. While most nutritionist recommend fasting to let the body rest and renew periodically, they also advise to stick to nutritious food and follow a routine on what to have when. Madhu is all for fruit and vegetable diet for detox and low fat dairy. Aditi adds nuts and seeds to fasting diet, "You can always pick up age-old wisdom that's been traditionally part of fasting. For example, date is an excellent breaking barrier bringing body to normalcy as it is energy dense."
Make a schedule
Spending the day eating nothing and hoarding at the day's end harms way more than it helps. Set a routine like: Early morning: A glass of milk/ smoothie/ milkshake Mid morning: Green tea plus a bowl full of seasonal fruit Lunch: Bowl of sauté veggies with buttermilk. Or raita forget boondi or bhalla, think ghiya, pumpkin, baigan, add jeera and mint. Evening: Green tea with handful of dry fruits or seeds (try makhana, lotus seeds, that are high on minerals) Pre-dinner:
Bowl of all veggies soup. Dinner: End your day with kesar badam milk.
Look for options
Replace cereals and oils with fruit, vegetable group and dairy. Avoid fried food. Fruit, vegetables and milk keeps you full and energetic through the day to carry on the regular routine. Weigh the calorie count before sticking to a menu. Keep exercise accordingly as much as the food intake and daily routine allows.

A romantic note
He wanted to study music; he was equipped with desire and passion. As he walked into a room full of interviewers, sitting stiff, asking him to show a certificate to validate his interest in music, Punjabi singer Amber Vashisht, a Ludhiana boy, could only shrug his shoulders. "I had no degree, not even a certificate, but I wanted to learn music," the singer says, remembering his days. "I finally got into LPU, Ludhiana, where I studied music. Before this, I had to prove to my father that I could work," he adds.
Amber, who lost his father a few months ago, credits his success and identity to him. The singer, who shot to fame with Akhiyan from Jatt & Juliet, is the newest romantic singer in the music fraternity and he has no qualms about admitting it. With an honest approach, he takes every minute as it comes. Music calling
I wanted to do something in music; my father also enjoyed singing, but that was all we had in the name of music. Things fall in place when they have to and I see myself in Pollywood today! First take
One of my seniors asked me to record a dummy track for Diljit Dosanjh for Jatt & Juliet. This was the first time I ever entered a recording studio. I recorded the track, but I wasn't sure if it would be used. The track was appreciated by everyone, including director Anurag Singh and actor Diljit Dosanjh; and finally, my first track was out! Butterflies & beyond
Of course, I was happy about the recognition
I got, but once the hullabaloo inside me settled, I was back on track. And the credit goes to…
I credit my parents for my success. My father had always been a pillar of strength; now my mother has filled his shoes in that respect. We're jamming
I would love to collaborate with rapper and singer Pitbull. If I aim for the stars, I can reach wherever I want to. Easy breezy
Unlike others, I don't have any hang ups about food. I carry a bottle of Coke when I'm recording as well. Live hits
My show at Delhi was a huge hit. I didn't know that people in Delhi would like my song, but they loved it! Future perfect
You will soon be hearing my voice in upcoming Punjabi film Happy Go Lucky. After that, I will start working on my track. You've got mail
I see that my fan base is growing; I try and reply to all queries.

Tipsy turvy
It is the starter of every Punjabi occasion, every party, every wedding, and every festival. Since the importance of this starter has been highlighted one time too many in Punjabi songs, it is pertinent to shift the radar on this sleek looking bottle of whisky.
You may be familiar with the colloquial word daru around which many singers have weaved their tales of their joy and sadness. Even after a good assortment of 118 songs on daru, the chaar bottle vodka has certainly reached far and beyond. Our only concern is—it is promoting alcohol or it is just fun? Ghar di sharaab hovey
We can't single out the Yo Man of the industry who gave alcohol this special status in his songs. A fleet of singers have already done that in the near past and are still doing it. Kuldeep Manak, Lal Chand Yamla Jatt, Gurdas Maan to the recent ones like Gippy Grewal, Sharry Mann, Deep Money, Bally Sagoo to name a few. With Honey Singh's recent track—Johnny Johnny hanji, Tuney pi hai-nai, Muh ko kholo, Jhoot boleya…has converted a classic rhyme into an alcohol anthem. Says Punjabi Singer Preet Harpal who is known for his 'young feeling' tracks, "I don't think by singing about daru or vodka, the singers are in anyway promoting the drinking culture. Daru is an important part of a happy or a sad moment, and the singers are simply stating it." Preet at the same time doesn't deny the fact that any singer would want to whip-up a whisky-type song. "This is going to be the song that will be played at maximum functions and live shows. Wouldn't a singer want it?" he leaves it here. Ni main ho gaya sharabi, Bebo di galan pink pink kali baithi kardi si drink, ohney beer sheer pikey rum chadda li oye, ghar di sharaab naal mail ki frootiyan da, tainu shadd gaye oye, whisky di boltal vargi ek kudi fasali oye…. the number of such tracks are only increasing in munber. Jassi Gill is one singer who has tried to send a message through his track Vigre Sharabi. The track made by Virsa Arts brings out the horrid side of consuming alcohol. Jassi adds, "Through this track we want to send a message that drinking kills, a message at the end of the track clearly states a report from WHO on how many people die due to drinking." Give it a shot
Most singers may feel that they are not promoting drinking, but the mention of alcohol finds it way in the lyrics somehow or the other. "Most of them are for fun and nothing more. It is a common thing for all parties. I don't think the songs advocating the people to leave everything and drink. These are just dance numbers," put in Gitaz. Another singer Alfaaz, who has given many super hit tracks and also sung Bebo di Galan Pink Pink, comes up candidly with his point, "We are singing on the current trend of clubbing and pubbing. We are not creating something out of nowhere. In fact, it is only a handful of singers who can reflect that's happening in society." Far and wide
Whisky is not the fixation with Punjabi industry only. Bollywood films have also widely used such tracks in films. Rum Rum… from Vicky Donor, Johnny Johnny from Akshay Kumar's It's Entertainment are the recent examples. Music director Gurmeeet Singh, however, talks about the two ways of looking at this trend. "If you look at pure entertainment then it is okay, and if you want to see it from cultural point of view then it is objectionable." He brings in the punch when he says, "First, people knew only about ghar di sharaab, with time they have moved on to better brands of whiskey, beer, rum, vodka with the new tracks."

Crystal clear
As if bling on the eyes and lips weren't enough, we have a new fashion accessory on the block—face crystals. While Hollywood celebs have been wearing the Indian bindi to accentuate their boho-chic fashion statement for years, as purists continue to debate the traditional bindi's 'abuse' as yet another fashion accessory, it is the trend of swanky face crystals that seem to be doing the rounds.
Luxury French brand Givenchy's Paris Fashion Week 2013 featured models with crystal faces, literally. Designer Pat McGrath decked up his models with face crystals, baring not even a single micro-inch of their face's skin. Hollywood celebrities Katy Perry, Venessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Rachel Brice and Shakira have flaunted the bindi with crystals for years. Closer home, brides and their repertoire prefer adorning this trend for post-wedding receptions, says Shivani Goyal, owner of Odara makeup studio, Chandigarh. "Since wedding makeup is usually conventional and engagement functions call for subtler looks, new brides prefer experimenting with face crystals for their receptions. And, the trend is fairly new, since girls have become bolder in their fashion sense of late," adds Shivani. So, is it gaudy? Not always. "You don't have to steer clear of using face crystals at the behest of looking gaudy. Just a couple of crystal stickers on the side of the eye complete your cat-eye look. Girls also prefer using them on their eyelids," says Shivani. For those looking to replicate the celeb fashion statement, options are aplenty. Find face crystal stickers or bindis on amazon.com or crystalbodytattoos.com or just drop by at the nearest Swarovski store and you might get lucky!

Nothing to hate about it
Fire fire everywhere… you bet! This is image that comes to mind after watching the smoking hot trailor of Hate Story 2. And this is the line people are now dedicating to the actress of film, Surveen Chawla. The last we saw her was in an oh-so-sweet role in Punjabi film Disco Singh, all covered up fashionably. In the up-coming film, Hate Story 2, the beautiful actress sheds quite a bit… inhibition and as well clothes!
As Surveen jumps from one interview to another, answering 'suddenly curious' questions, she takes everything in her stride and moves on… So, do you feel the change in the air? (Laughs) Definitely. Suddenly people are taking me seriously. However, the change also comes with the popularity of the trailor, the music and the look of the film. From a girl-next-door to the dare-to-bare actress, have you surprised yourself? Not even a bit. I never got the opportunity to do a role with such strong sex appeal. This side of me was always under wraps. I couldn't see the opportunity coming in Punjab, and I am glad it finally happened to me. The trailors of the film are already the talk of the town, the hot and sexy scenes…any inhibitions while doing the bold scenes? Contrary to what I thought, I wasn't uncomfortable a bit. In fact, deep inside, I had conditioned myself. Otherwise, I couldn't have done this role. I feel the biggest damage an actor can do to his acting is by holding back. Jay Bhanushali, your
co-actor looks equally fiery. How was it working with him? I know Jay for a while now since both of us come from television. We have hosted shows together. When you work together, it is natural to develop a chemistry, which helped us in the film. With someone else, I would taken time to develop that comfort level. But with Jay, it came easy. Constant comparisons with Sunny Leone, where does that leave you? Firstly, I want to clear up. I am not at all insecure with Sunny Leone doing an item number in the film. I think all her songs are popular and she is a hot and sexy woman. And secondly, how can there be a comparison between a Chinese and an Italian cuisine? The reactions back in Punjab have been pretty strong though? Yes, I am getting a lot of flak on Fb and on twitter where people are saying really harsh things about me. At the same time, I have fan clubs in Punjab where people are supporting me. Just because Punjabi film industry has developed, that doesn't mean their mentality has changed. It will take sometime for it to change, but this doesn't mean, I would stop working. The toughest scene in
Hate story 2? For the intimate scenes with Jay, my mantra was 'let's just get it over with in one take'. Then there was one scene on the second day of my shoot, where I suffered a slip disc because of a scene which was a monologue. I was hospitalised and could reasume shooting after almost 20 days from the same scene. jasmine@tribunemail.com

Bite into the delicious litchi
Satish Narula It's my favourite…litchi time! I am lured by the very sight of the fruit that is red with blush. But for God's sake, don't make the blush the colour of 'blood' seeing some of the reports in daily vernaculars where the death of a few children have been associated with litchi. Consider these news items as too premature and so far unfounded. Remember, a few months back flu had wrongly been associated with 'New Delhi'. Litchi, rightly justifying its meaning as 'gift for loyal life', is a rich source of nutrients that suit the body during summer months. It is a rich source of vitamin C and consumption of even 8 to 10 fruits meets your body's one day requirement. Vitamin C gives strength to the body against diseases. Besides, litchi is an excellent source of copper, phosphorus (strengthens brittle bones) and potassium that are good for heart (normalises blood pressure and heart rate), and brain! Unlike many of the plant-based fruit and foods, the litchi is cholesterol free and is low in saturated fat as well as sodium. Litchi fruit is known to have flavonoids and other anti-cancer cell proliferation chemicals. These have impressive anti-breast cancer properties. Litchi has abundance of oligonol that is excellent anti-oxidant and prevents anti-influenza virus actions. Encephalopathy is explained by medical science as a brain fever caused by various kinds of virus, bacteria, fungi, toxic chemicals; condition of liver, brain, anoxia (short oxygen supply) or even excessive consumption of alcohol. There are more than 25 types of encephalopathy caused by similar number of mosquito species. Had this been understood, the litchi would not been associated 'exclusively' with this condition. At least the reporting could have waited till the laboratory reports were received and implication confirmed. (Narula is a Chandigarh-based horticulturist and landscapist) |

Cool confidence
Designers are aplenty today, but the younger generation is quite aware of whom and what to choose' thanks to the wide exposure through the media. Abhijot Singh, a student of animation, likes to be his own designer. Your sense of style… Style is a combo of personality and confidence. I especially admire those who can carry off street-wear with the same smartness as the brands. Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories… Shoes from Jack and Jones in purple colour.
Brand crazy or street pick-up Both; suitability is the key factor. Who is your style icon? Ranbir Kapoor. Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity Can't think of anybody! Which look do you prefer — sporty, chic or glamorous Sporty. One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension I am a great one for experimentation and like to try out every fashion. Aussie treat!
Topping the Billboard charts, Fancy is a song by Australian recording artist, Iggy Azalea from her debut studio album, The New Classic. The song features English singer and songwriter Charli XCX and is the fourth single from the album. The song has been ruling the charts for over seven consecutive weeks now and has became XCX's second top-ten single on the US Hot 100 after collaborating with Swedish synthpop duo Icona Pop on their single I Love It, which reached number 7 last year. Novel touch
I was almost flabbergasted with the idea of a woman rapping, so well and I think Iggy deserves to take the number one position by the sheer virtue of her talent. I love the lyrics and more importantly the music. Vrinda Lekhi, graphic designer Great confidence
The best part of the song is the confidence that Iggy oozes, as she sings and it really does not seem like this is her debut album. Talking of Iggy's music sense, I think she takes after Gwen Stefani, only in a good way. Jasmeet Kaur, private bank employee Good vibes
I love the song. It's fantastic! I am in love with the peppiness, novelty and the general vibe of the song.
However, the most interesting thing about the song is the fact that it has a certain quality of constant momentum that continues to grip you throughout. It's new, invigorating and quite an exciting number. Akshat, Chandigarh-based musician (As told to Amarjot Kaur)

Chemical bonding
Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is a Bollywood romantic-comedy film that stars Varun Dhawan as Rakesh 'Humpty' Sharma and Alia Bhatt as Kavya Pratap Singh in the lead roles. When Kavya Pratap Singh, a chirpy, feisty girl from Ambala, decides to take a trip to Delhi for her marriage shopping, she meets Humpty Sharma, a typical Delhi lad. While Kavya seems like a far-fetched dream for Humpty initially, it makes the idea of romancing her even more endearing. Although the two share a love-hate relationship with each other, their chemistry is apparent. When her trip to Delhi ends, she heads back to Ambala knowing well that her father would never accept her love for Humpty. However, Humpty decides to fight his way through love! Very refreshing
I really like the film. It's refreshing and entertaining. When you watch
the film, it does not seem like both Alia and Varun are so young, new in the industry. They are effortlessly
brilliant. Anahita Khanna, employee at a private firm Good fun
It is a very interesting film and a complete paisa vasool! I love the drama in the film, which neither goes overbroad nor is underplayed. I love the film and would recommend it to all those who are in for good entertainment! Jagriti Lamba, student Interesting watch
I think the best part about the film is the chemistry between Kavya and Humpty, which is further complimented by the funny dialogues. I love the film and the storyline. It's very hard to come up with something new and refreshing in the romantic genre, but this film is really interesting. Praveen Kumar,

Instil confidence
Simmi Waraich My 24-year-old daughter has self-esteem issues. Lately, she has become very conscious of her diet. What can I do to increase her self-confidence? Anita Khanna, Chandigarh Firstly, this may be just a passing phase. So instead of losing your cool, try and get involved. Ask her what diet she is following and what are the benefits she hopes to achieve. Get some diet charts for her, which are used by prominent people and are healthy. Make healthy food choices yourself and walk or exercise regularly. Be a role model for your own child. Make your daughter media literate. Watch television with her and discuss things. Don't raise her just to agree to people. Encourage her to speak up. Compliment her. Encourage her participation in different activities. Good self-esteem comes when one is given an audience, when one is allowed to speak their views out and make their own decisions. Many parents discuss whether we should be talking to girls about oral contraceptives as they are scared that with more and more boys as well as girls in relationships, unprotected sex may occur and be harmful. Is it okay to discuss such issues with girls? Kamalpreet Kaur, Patiala. Not only girls, it's useful to discuss such issues with boys too. After all, we are raising children as responsible citizens. One can discuss such issues through some incident that one may have heard of or some news in the papers or just tell the child that you wish to talk. One cannot just turn a blind eye and pretend it is not happening. It is useful to ask what they think about it. Of course, it helps if one has a good relationship. Discuss how oral contraceptives are available and a gynaecologist can be consulted. Also talk to boys about the use of condoms. Talk about how abstinence is something you and the family would strongly prefer, but that you feel it is important for the teenager to know everything so they can make an informed choice. Be open if they talk about boyfriends or girlfriends instead of teasing them or they may not talk to you anymore. (Waraich is a Chandigarh-based psychiatrist) |

Kofta couture
Kandla Nijhowne We call them koftas and make them with 'lauki' more often than not. The Arabs call them kufteh and shape them out of minced lamb more often than not. The Swedes make meatballs, the Kashmiris take pride in their gushtaba, the Americans make dumplings; the Danes cook frikadeller....the story goes on. We often stick to the tried and tested, finding a new option somewhat sticky. Let me share with you today a popular restaurant dish, Malaai Kofta. Remember, homemade can be as good if not better. The recipe seems long but don't let it daunt you!
Malaai kofta
For gravy
2 tbsp oil 4 green elaichis ½ cup finely grated onion 2 green chillies 1¼ tbsp ginger garlic paste ½ tsp chilly powder 1 tsp each ground jeera and dhaniya 1 tsp salt 4-5 ripe tomatoes 15 cashewnuts ½ cup milk 4 tbsp cream ½ tsp garam masala
Method
Grate the paneer and mix in the salt, raisins and crumbs. Place the maida and cornflour in two separate plates. Set up oil for frying. Shape mixture into balls, roll in the maida and then in the
cornflour. Deep fry the koftas till well-browned but don't overcook. The paneer can turn hard. Blanch the whole tomatoes in boiling water, then peel and puree. Soak the cashews for an hour then make a paste in a
liquidiser. Heat 2 tbsp of oil and add crushed elaichis and slit green chillies. Stir till fragrant. Add grated onions and cook till almost brown. Now add the ginger garlic paste, chilly powder, dhaniya and jeera powder, and salt. Cook briefly till the raw garlic smell vanishes. Add 2-3 ladles of water; cook and simmer for 5-7 minutes. Add cashew paste and stir in very quickly lest it burns. Sprinkle in a little more water if necessary and cook till well blended. Add milk and stir briefly. Do not boil now or the milk may curdle. Finally stir in the cream and garam masala. Turn off the heat. Arrange the koftas in a shallow bowl and pour the gravy over them. Garnish with a slit chilly and a drizzle of cream. One more time…
Deepika Padukone starts shooting with Imtiaz Ali for Tamasha in Corsica, France. Deepika has come together with the ace writer-director for the second time, the first one being Love Aaj Kal in 2009. Imtiaz, who usually does not prefer to repeat his female cast, has however made an exception with Deepika. In fact, Deepika has been repeated by most of her directors. She made a roaring debut with Om Shanti Om, six years ago. After all this while when Farah was making her next romantic film, she could not think of anyone else to cast but Deepika Padukone. Even Homi Adajania, who had his first outing with Cocktail, signed Deepika for his next. Even though Finding Fanny is a very different film from Cocktail, he was sure Deepika would convincingly deliver this side of the spectrum as well. He usually repeats Dimple Kapadia in his films.
Deepika will also be seen working with Sanjay Leela Bansali after Ram Leela. Sanjay Leela Bansali, who has a gracious way of making his heroines look gorgeous and extract amazing performances from them, has cast her for the role of Mastani along with Ranveer Singh again. A director repeating an actor is a huge compliment. Deepika says, "I am fortunate I get to work with some of the best directors in Bollywood, not just once but multiple times. This is the best phase of my career and it just keeps getting better."

Content with the new role
Back on the tube, Nandish Sandhu is glad to be playing a Muslim character again in Beintehaa. Having been a part of the hit show, Uttaran, the actor talks about competition on TV and the response to his new role.
How are you enjoying the show and the role? The role is interesting, as it has been developed and not just introduced arbitrarily. When a character is crafted well, it shows. We had gone to Lucknow and Kanpur recently to promote the show and the audiences there were warm and welcoming. I was surprised by the response, as I had joined an on-going show. How is it playing a Muslim character? It is different. But it isn't new to me, as I have done Khwashish and Encounter earlier, where I played Muslim characters. I have done about eight shows till date; the first time I played a Muslim role, it was difficult, as I had to use the nuktha and the words they use. They were tough to catch up on. Now, it's not so difficult. Is it difficult to stand out in the midst of competition on TV? It is always difficult, but I think that's the way it should be. Competition pushes you to get out there and grow and experiment and reinvent yourself. Uttaran has completed six years. How does it feel? It feels great. Uttaran was close to my heart, as was Veer, no matter what. Whenever any news
about the show comes up, I remember the days I was a part of the show. I wish the makers of the show all the best. Lots has been written about your separation with your wife… I wouldn't want to talk about it; it's a personal matter.
