In the course of stepped-up drive for recovery of arrears of house tax and user charges for water supply and sewerage, the cash-strapped Municipal Corporation today made a recovery of more than Rs 2 lakh while some more defaulters gave an undertaking to deposit the money on Monday and Tuesday.

Mid-day meal samples collected
Ludhiana, July 11
The Health Department collected 13 food samples from in and around the city today. A team, under the supervision of District Health Officer Abnash Kumar, collected the samples of curd, mixed vegetable, soft drink and milk from dhabas on the Samrala road. 

Missing man found dead

A 26-year-old man, who had gone missing from his house at Guru Harrai Nagar on Thursday morning, was found dead on the Jassian road here today.

RTI activist demands probe
Ludhiana, July 11
The front portion of the building is covered with sheets as construction activity continues in an unlawful manner on a plot at Old Sabzi Mandi Chowk in Ludhiana. In a complaint lodged with the vigilance wing of the Local Government Department, Punjab, the Council of RTI Activists president, Rohit Sabharwal, has alleged that a commercial building being constructed on a 200-sq-yd plot at Old Sabzi Mandi Chowk had made 100 per cent coverage, a non-compoundable violation of the building bylaws.

Dept issues new VAT 15 quarterly return form
Ludhiana, July 11
The Excise and Taxation Department has issued new VAT 15 quarterly return form for the April-June quarter. The department has made an amendment under Section 13 (1), according to which traders will be able to claim the input tax credit (ITC) only after the sale of any good.

An NGO has taken the initiative to fulfil the cricketing dreams of a budding player, Lovejit. At an age of 10, the gifted cricketer practises for eight hours a day. The Global Social Foundation has gifted him a bicycle and a cricket kit, seeing his passion for the game.

Man seeks CBI probe into son’s murder
Ludhiana, July 11

A Prem Vihar resident has demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged kidnapping and murder of his son in 2012. The complainant, Jagdish Chand, alleged that his son, Shivam (14), was allegedly kidnapped and murdered by Sunil Kumar, Lallu and their accomplices on May 1, 2012. An FIR was registered against the duo on May 22, 2012, and Sunil was arrested in the case, while a Ludhiana court declared Lallu a proclaimed offender, said the father.

Stillbirth: Man accuses docs of negligence

The father of a stillborn baby has accused the doctors at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Sahnewal, of negligence leading to the stillbirth of his child at the Civil Hospital, Ludhiana.

Ludhiana: The noted Punjabi writer Shiv Nath is admitted to a Chandigarh hospital. Punjabi Sahit Akademi has appealed to the state government to bear the expense of his treatment because of his poor financial condition. 22-year-old commits suicide

A 22-year-old, who was allegedly suffering from hair fall, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her house at Raji Colony, near Hambra road, here today.

15 booked for duping woman
Jagraon, July 11
The Jagraon police have booked 15 persons, including four Canada-based NRIs, for duping a woman of Rs 30 lakh on the pretext of sending her daughter to Canada after marriage.
