The announcement about the increase in taxes on tobacco products has come as a breather for the Health Department, which has been making efforts to make Ludhiana smoke-free.

Goods worth Rs 3 lakh destroyed in BRS Nagar shop fire

A major fire broke out at an electronic goods shop in L Block of BRS Nagar last night. The shop owner claimed goods worth more than Rs 3 lakh were destroyed in the fire.
The fire broke out at 12.45 am and the shop owner, who resides on the second floor of the same building, got to know about it at around 1 am. The shop owner, Paramjeet Singh said when he came to know that his shop was on fire, he tried to get down the stairs. But the whole ground floor was engulfed by flames.

Govt School PAU draws meritorious students

Government Model Senior Secondary School PAU released the cut-off lists for medical, non-medical and commerce streams of Class XI. As many as 119 students, scoring more than 80 per cent, have got admission to the school. Twenty-two students, with more than 90 per cent, got admission in non-medical stream (Class XI). Highest scorer Pooja, who got 96.67 per cent in Class X, also preferred taking admission in the government school.
