Tribune News Service

Mohali, July 10
Giving relief to a retired engineer of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), the local court acquitted him in a case of corruption, filed by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau nine years ago.

The court of Mohali additional district Judge Parminder Pal Singh acquitted RP Singla against whom the Vigilance Bureau had registered a case of corruption under Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act on August 18, 2005. The police had booked Singla for disproportionate assets. Then Singla had alleged connivance of vigilance officers with an influential person (an owner of a private engineering firm) who had been caught stealing power worth Rs 50,000 every month by him (Singla). “I was implicated in a false case by the vigilance sleuths”, claimed Singla.

While acquitting Singla, the court also observed that there were several lapses on the part of investigating officer of vigilance in the case.

‘The role of the investigating officer and the agency was not above board’ held the court, stating that the prosecution had not been able to prove its case beyond the shadow of reasonable doubt which led to the acquittal of the accused.

AstroTurf gets wet after 7 days
Owing to a technical problem last week, water could not be sprinkled on the artificial field

Chandigarh, July 10
After remaining dry for almost seven days, the AstroTurf at the hockey stadium in the Sports Complex, Sector 42, finally got some sprinkling of water this evening.

The AstroTurf, which is already in a pitiable condition as its expiry date has lapsed, went dry following some technical problem in a motor last week. The problem was resolved this morning.

Since last Thursday (July 3), hockey players were unable to play on the AstroTurf and were asked to go through physical conditioning for a certain period.

Also, the trials scheduled to shortlist the hockey team of a local college were called off as the artificial field had become hard due to dryness.

The AstroTurf expired during the year 2008-09 and the UT Sports Department was maintaining it purely by keeping it wet.

The department is still struggling to get bidders for laying the new field. Ever since the AstroTurf expired, the work to float new tenders and finalising specifications is under process. The new field was expected to be laid by the end of 2011 but was delayed due to a review of the demand notice inviting tender (DNIT) specifications. Till date, the project is jumping deadlines.

Despite having a planned budget for past five years, the Sports Department failed to lay a new artificial field.

Interestingly, the Education Department, the Sports Department and the Chandigarh Hockey Association host tournaments on the same field putting players to risk of getting hurt.

Fallout

  • Since July 3, hockey players were unable to play on the AstroTurf and were asked to go through physical conditioning for a certain period.
  • Also, the trials scheduled to shortlist the hockey team of a local college were called off as the artificial field had become hard due to dryness.
