A quintessential Sufi
Long before Sufism became a fad, much before every singer worth his salt proclaimed undying love for Sufi music, quietly and devotedly Barkat Sidhu simply sang. Without ado or fuss, without unwanted embellishments or gimmicks! The kalams of all time greats like Bulle Shah and Shah Hussain found a devoted interpreter in his inimitable, strong and mellifluous voice.
Keeping the flame of Sufi gayaki alive since many decades, he has stood steadfast against the onslaught of lachar gayaki. Perhaps, the simple man has never truly understood that he epitomises a tradition which, but for men like him would have been long forgotten. Today the singer is battling with the dreaded disease of cancer. But nothing can diminish the sparkle of his voice, the aura of his saintly persona and his immeasurable
contribution to the world of music. No wonder popular Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans calls him behtareen se behtareen, better than the best whose singing is as unparalleled as his heart is clear and unblemished. Noted theatre person Dr Atamjit couldn't agree more. Music can move mountains… at least Barkat Sidhu can. He recalls one particular concert of Barkat at Punjab Kala Bhawan where he felt the building sway with his mellifluous notes. Others swear by his rendering of songs like Goriye mein jaana pardes and Main wi jhok Ranjhan di jana. So what is special about his gayaki? Dr Atamjit calls it robust and rich. Director Rajeev Sharma in whose National Award winning film Nabar, Barkat rendered a light romantic song Dil yaar hi yaar penned by Munna Dhiman, gushes, "A true Sufi, his voice soothes frayed nerves and gives one sakoon. Listening to him is an elevating experience and his improvisations that I added as an addendum to the song are incomparable." Besides he hails him for not falling prey to the dictates of market and for upholding the purity of music and sanctity of lyrics. Barkat's cousin Ustaad Puran Shah Koti, himself an inimitable Sufi singer, hails Barkat's singular ability to touch the high and low octaves at one go. Down the memory lane, he remembers Barkat's god gifted talent, his resolve, their many concerts and especially the one that coincided with the inception of Jalandhar Doordarshan. "Without doubt," he says, "there is only one Barkat in Punjab." Yet, the singer whose voice is steeped in classicism, in the tradition of Patiala gharana hasn't really got his real due. Hans rues, "That is the tragedy of Punjab that it doesn't value or cherish its greats." Dr Atamjit feels since Barkat has not mastered the art of marketing he couldn't push himself through even though he is deserving of many national awards. Koti, however, has a different take and avers that the path of Sufism and saaf suthri gayaki is anyway never easy. Besides, he observes that those who do appreciate such gayaki are true aficionados, ready to go an extra mile for their ideal. That Barkat is, and ought to be, a role model for many goes without saying. Actually, he has not only inspired generations of singers but even men like Rajeev. He recalls it was his childhood wish to work with Barkat Sidhu since he grew up listening to some of his memorable and revolutionary songs like Pagdi sambhal jattan. While the wish came true with Nabar he hopes that the singer recovers to lend his voice once again for his next, a Bollywood film. Amen!

Cut to couture
The interiors of the studio remind you of the underground track of the Delhi metro. They are plain and cemented, in stark contrast to the material it stores, all embellished, glittery and colourful. We don't know if it is a conscious decision to keep the surroundings Spartan but it does help shifting the focus to designs, primarily couture.
So, on fabric which runs into tens of meters to construct lehengas and anarakali suits, there is zardosi work, also a deluge of sequins and stones. Prêt finds a much smaller space dedicated to itself and the area defined for it hasn't increased by an inch since the studio Shruti S opened in 2012. "What I supply depends only on what people demand. Women from the Tricity only approach a designer when they want some wedding or party wear. To sell here, you have to have a practical approach," says Shruti Singla, NIFT, Delhi pass-out of the 2011 batch. Being practical is also the first rule of running a designer studio, second being originality in her rule book. In the cityscape, where running a boutique is the short cut to becoming an entrepreneur and earning some quick buck, opening a designer studio is a different ball game altogether. "There are times, when I explain people the difference between boutiques and a designer's den. It's difficult to convince them that neither I take material from outside nor do I replicate designs," says Shruti, as she introduces her maiden collection, the Dancing Bird. The peacock-inspired collection is done in obvious colours of golden, blue, green and a hint of red. And, the peacock motifs take care of the embroidery part. She pulls out a lehenga to explain her love for the bird. It has the motif running from near the belt towards the hemline created by zardosi and pearls. The cost of Rs1.75 lakh is intimidating but she says handcrafted work deserves appreciation in monetary form as well. Her client list is getting lengthier gradually, but to make that happen, she had to make a compromise. "There are creations that are hundred per cent hand-crafted and there are the ones which are about cut and paste work. I use ready-made laces to beautify them." That brings down the cost of the creations, which means more buyers, more business. While making replicas could add profit to her balance sheet, it is something she detests. "I don't mind that it generates revenues for boutique owners but as an alumni of NIFT, it's something unethical for me." She claims that she also does a lot of batik work, which has been a complete sold out. "I prefer that to tie-and-dye. Batik lends grace to the fabric." Out with her next collection, CELCIS, carefully formed from the words, cuts, embroidery, layering, colour, traditional styling, Shruti has stuck to the idea and you can spot all the six elements in her creations. Consider the lehenga with three layers, a short velvet layer on the top, heavily embroidered net forming the middle layer with a long slit that gives one a peek into the third
layer.

Time to make some noise! The stage is set and he can't wait to dole out some foot-tapping numbers. Nikhil Chinapa, the man with a dozen moods, is all set for the hype and fanfare at EDM Festival, Goa. The creative brain of this project, Nikhil has always wanted to try and experiment new things and has loads of plans for the festival, starting from old and new things.
Much before the festival, Nikhil is all charged-up to share what's in his mind. "We are planning to give the audience an unmatched experience, the festival is set to get bigger, better and groovier with world class music and performances. Resurrecting the lively vibe, Vh1 Supersonic has special treats in store for its fans that will keep adding up, leading to the mega event in Goa this December," he says. "We are kicking off the celebrations with the Super-Sling ticket bag, where 1000 Vh1 Supersonic enthusiasts will get a chance to be a part of this unforgettable journey with us," Nikhil is all excited. There is more he would want to add to it though. "The Super-Sling is a ticket bag filled with tons of surprises, awarded to the first 1000 loyalists who will buy a ticket to India's biggest EDM beach party. These EMD aficionados will not just get exclusive first-hand information about the developments at Vh1 Supersonic 2014, but there are many more surprises for Supersonic Lovers right till the D-day in Goa," he goes through every detail. Nikhil has dabbled in television and in advertisements, but he could never stay away from music. "This is something that keeps me moving, new sounds, new genres, crowds singing and swaying. This is a total addiction and this is precisely the reason why music festivals are getting popular." Nikhil doesn't want to be questioned on the popularity of music festivals. fans turn out in huge numbers explains its popularity," he adds. The festival will kick-start in December and Nikhil wants every music fan to have a time of their life. "This is not just a festival, it is going to be a journey and you must watch out for it." Well, this brings him to share some information on his journey. Where do we see him next? On a reality show or ads or films? "Well, I am pleased to say, that my days are filled with music and excitement. We are going all out with Vh1 Supersonic 2014, and setting a new bar for EDM festivals in the country. We have tons of surprises, which will start unfolding in the next several weeks," he winds up.

Putting — the grip
Jesse Grewal Putting is one part of the game where there are many preferences, especially in the grip. The grip fitted on the putter is different to the rest of the clubs as it is not round and has a flat surface on the top for the placement of both the thumbs, and a curved surface on the underside which is shaped to fit into the palm of the left hand (for right-handed golfers). As the grip made on the putter is different to that on the rest of the clubs, it is logical that we should have a different grip for putting as compared to the rest of the game. There are various grips used in putting and also variations in the methods used. Belly and long putters are still used and till the ban on them comes into force they are an option. The standard or commonly used putting grip is the reverse overlap where the index finger of the left hand is extended and placed over the fingers of the right hand (picture 1). Place the left hand on the grip of the putter with the putter grip placed in the palm and the thumb on top of the flat surface of the grip. This will bring the shaft of the putter in line with the forearms, which reduces the wrist action. Then place the right hand with the thumb also on the flat surface and let the left hands index finger come over the right hands fingers (picture 2). The routine used by good players is done by placing the right hand first on the putter with the thumb on the flat surface and then slipping the left hand in with its index finger coming on top of the right hand. This helps in setting the right hand first and maintaining that position through the stroke. More on other variations of the putting grip in next week's article. (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently the Director of National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at parexcellence@tribunemail.com) |

Here's what you can do: Get started: Yes, that's the first and most important thing. You need to get the fire burning and get down to the computer if you really want to start off. Identify what is your area of interest and work upon it. Read up: It is important to know everything about your job before you take it up. You could read up online or buy books from the market that are relevant to your subject. From ouch to wow!
Laser therapy is an effective and painless way to get rid of the unwanted hair Dr Sukhdeep Kaur Summer is here. That means it's time to flaunt fabulous dresses and gorgeous, satin smooth, hairless skin. Who wants to miss out on a beach trip or visit to a rooftop pool because of leftover winter stubble? If you're just coming out of hibernation, now is a great time to consider your options when it comes to keeping the bikini line, underarms and legs smooth, bump-free and swimsuit-ready! Wax eloquent
We all know that keeping our bodies hairless in all the right places isn't always smooth sailing! So, when we go to parlours for waxing don't forget it has various side effects like redness and inflammation, pimples, ingrown hair, bumps, bruising, burned and change in skin colour. Ray of hope
While waxing offers temporary hair removal, laser hair removal offers a permanent, painless and safest way to get rid of unwanted facial and body hair. The most advanced laser for hair removal is Diode laser which is US FDA approved for treating any body area in both men and women, for all skin types. Laser uses collimated beams of light which selectively target the follicular cells (these are present at the base of hair follicle).Once follicular cells absorb light energy they are permanently destroyed, resulting in permanent hair reduction. Most of the patients need six to eight effective treatment sessions spaced at few weeks apart. Since, hair grows in cycles, several sessions are required to affect all the hair in a given area. Hair growth varies over body parts. Facial hair requires more frequent sittings as compared to arms and legs. The treatment sessions are scheduled four to six weeks apart so that the maximum number of hair in growth cycle (anagen) phase are targeted to get substantial results. The laser technique is felt as a mild heat as in a massage. The patients are very comfortable and at ease as compared to painful, expensive, time consuming waxing or threading. Any body part (chin, upper-lips, cheeks, neck, chest, arms and legs) can be treated. The whole body laser requires three hours. The average experience shows 70 to 80 per cent reduction in hair after six to eight sessions. Slight redness, burning sensation, swelling are seen post laser but that is temporary and subsides within hours. The patient can apply ice cubes to reduce the burning sensation. A broad spectrum sunscreen (UVA, UVB blocker) must be applied post laser to prevent hyper
pigmentation. (Dr Kaur is a Chandigarh-based dermatologist)

The better butter!
It's not the conventional butter that harms more than it benefits the body - peanut butter is everything healthy to gain from and to elaborate on the same, Chandigarh-based dietician, Shreya Goel, held a workshop at Taj in Chandigarh on Thursday.
"The general perception is that peanut butter is fattening and leads to high cholesterol, which is all a myth," says Shreya. The fact is that it is rich in protein, works as a great iron supplement and is best for diabetic and anemic patients. "It's also very filling and thus helps in weight management. It has no oil or cholesterol or trans-fatty acids." The workshop also was about peanut butter recipes, milk shakes topping the menu.

Dressed to kill
Shilpa Shetty is in shape and she is a style icon par excellence. She shares her style tips here.
Fashion talk Style has different meanings for different people. I feel it is personal. It has to be trendsetting and not a trend that is blindly
followed. Comfort clothes When I am at home, I slip into my t-shirt and track pants—anything that makes it easy to run around with my son (laughs). Party wear I choose my clothes depending on what kind of an occasion it is. For parties, I generally prefer dresses or a formal top paired with well-fitted black pants. Accessories I decide on my accessories once I have made up my mind about the clothes that I want to wear. It should match with my outfit. But I like to keep it simple. So, most of the time, you will see me only in my solitaires and finger ring. Styling tips Dress to please yourself, not the world. And choose occasion-appropriate clothes. I have made many fashion faux pas but my worst nightmare would be the zipper giving away just before you walk the red carpet! (laughs again) Beauty secret One beauty advice that I religiously follow is to never use soap on my face. I use a gentle cleanser and a good sunscreen for glowing skin. I always apply a deep conditioner to my hair every time I wash
it.

What’s in a name?
Actors change the spellings of their name for extra luck. But apparently adding an extra 'b' in her name three years ago didn't really work for Vahbbiz Dorabjee. So she has gone back to her original spelling, which is
Vahbiz.
Sudesh is back
He played a rich, unpredictable zamindar in Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo and now Sudesh Berry will play a similar role. He will be seen in producer Siddharth Tewary's next show Bandhan, which is about the relationship between a little girl and an elephant.
Face off
Buzz is that makers of Qubool Hai are working on a new show for their upcoming channel Sony Pal. But instead of reports that the show might star Jennifer Winget, news is that they will go for a fresh face. Harshad Chopda is in talks with the makers and he might make a comeback to TV with the show.
Out of scene? Jennifer Winget
Comic timing
People remember her as Hansa from Khichdi and now Supriya Pathak will be back on TV in yet another comedy, SAB TV's Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai. She will be seen on the show not very regularly, but as a recurring character.
