‘Misbehaviour’ with woman hostel attendant GS Paul Tribune News Service
Amritsar, June 27 It has been learnt that the erring official, identified as Capt Ashok Kumar, had allegedly conducted checking at the girls’ hostel during odd hours a few weeks ago without the permission of competent authorities. It has been learnt that the woman attendant had submitted a complaint with the Chief Security Officer, Col Harbans Singh, about the instance, who later brought the matter to the notice of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof AS Brar. After a scrutiny into the matter, Professor Brar issued his dismissal orders on charges of “sexual harassment” of a woman staff member. The dismissal orders have been received in the office of the security wing. Ironically, the services of the supervisor in question were recently regularised. Officials said that Capt Ashok Kumar had his duty hours between 1 am to 9 am on that day. He went to the girls’ hostel at around 2 am. When the woman attendant objected to it, he allegedly indulged in loose talk with her. Confirming the matter, Col Harbans Singh said that services of the supervisor had been terminated under the charge of sexual harassment of a woman attendant, who, unfortunately, was a widow. He said that it was improper for the supervisor to enter the girls’ hostel without permission. The matter was scrutinised by the women’s cell, especially constituted recently to deal with such cases. It has been found during investigation that the supervisor had been harassing the same woman for quite some time, but she had complained only in this particular instance. “The victim had lodged a complaint with me stating that the supervisor had passed objectionable remarks on her during the wee hours on that day. I forwarded the complaint to the VC for further action. The supervisor had even confessed about his misconduct and had submitted an apology to the authorities. But the VC issued his dismissal orders,” Col Harbans Singh said. |
SGPC holds meeting with MC officials
Amritsar, June 27 They also conducted a survey of the area and after gauging the bottlenecks, the secretary of the SGPC, Dalmegh Singh, said the MC had been conveyed to level the potholes, especially on the Ram Talai elevated road stretch leading to Ghee Mandi. Similarly, several shopkeepers have extended their shops in an illegal manner, encroaching upon the pedestrian paths. MC officials have been told to initiate prompt action in that regard. Traders and transporters do not refrain from parking their vehicles by the roadside, narrowing down the already congested lanes. As the British era sewerage system has gone obsolete, it is observed that the water channels often remain blocked. “MC officials have been asked to clean up the chocked drains. During rainy season, the areas from the Langar Hall to Phatak Wali Gali, Atta Mandi deori and the passage towards Akal Takht, are inundated due to faulty sewerage system. We have asked MC officials to clean the water drainage system at these points,” said Dalmegh Singh. With a view to discourage the taxi, auto-rickshaw and cycle-rickshaw operators from pestering the pilgrims, the MC has also been told to put boards by the roadside telling the distance of Golden Temple from different locations. Also, to make the surroundings environment-friendly, the SGPC has proposed the MC to plant saplings. The MC has also been told to devise a plan to dispose of the garbage generated by the traders established around the Golden Temple complex. MC Commissioner Pardeep Sabharwal, who attended the meeting along with other officials, said it was his moral duty to revamp the area around the Golden Temple and every effort would be made to remove the shortcomings. “We would be conducting a rigorous drive to beautify the area around Golden Temple. Our teams will approach the traders and ask them to remove the encroachments on the public passages and dispose of their garbage at the designated places. Our concerned staff will lift the garbage from the trolleys during the wee hours so that the pilgrims should get a clean passage. About the illegal parking of vehicles, I will be co-ordinating with the police commissioner and request him to depute special recovery vans in the areas around the Golden Temple,” he said. |
Choked storm-water drainage GS Paul Tribune News Service
Amritsar, June 27 Even as the earlier efforts of MC could not bear desired results during the rains, this time private players have been roped in to arrange super-sucker machines for cleaning the storm-water drainage system. The project will cost Rs 12 lakh for conducting the exercise in all 65 wards of the city, which have been grappling with waterlogging woes during the monsoon every year. According to information, the MC has been paying Rs 1,800 per super-sucker machine for cleaning up 1 metre of sewerage drainage passage. Mayor Bakshi Ram Arora said that a team of 60-70 staff members had been deputed for the job. It has been learnt that the MC Commissioner has instructed all staff members concerned not to take leave without informing the authorities during these days. “These super-sucker machines have been pressed into service at various key points, which included areas near the Golden Temple complex, Town Hall, Ram Tirath Road, Batala road, Guru Ki Wadali and Katra Jaimal Singh. All sensitive water-disposal points are on our radar. This time, we are quite hopeful of giving relief to the residents and commuters on the road,” Arora said. SDO-level officials of the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Wing and Water and Sewerage Wing have been told to be present to oversee the operations in difference parts of the holy city. Besides, the MC has sanctioned Rs 10 lakh each for the five constituencies for carrying out the road patchwork. Similarly, the Streetlight Wing has been directed to cover naked wires before hand. The Water and Sewerage Wing officials have been told to check the water-disposal plants. The fire-brigade officials have been instructed to be on their toes and the Civil Wing officials have been told to make adequate arrangements for dry sand sacks. What results this exercise will yield will be observed in the coming rainy season, but in the past, the MC’s Rs 40-lakh cleanliness drive had a negligible outcome during the last rainy season. |
