Police arrest women burglars
Chandigarh, June 17 The police arrested Seema, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Shallu, a resident of Bhaskar Colony, Sector 25, and Seema, a resident of Sector 56. The police recovered stolen gold ornaments from their possession, which they had stolen on June 8. The crime branch team headed by Sub Inspector Rajdeep Singh along with other officials under the supervision of crime branch in charge Inspector Ranjodh Singh, set up a barrier near the PGI roundabout towards PEC road, when the three were arrested. The crime branch officials said they had worked out five more cases so far and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 6 lakh from the women. The accused women are habitual offenders as they have been arrested by the police many times in the past too. The women used to identify their target houses by posing themselves as garbage lifters and would move about in the locality. After finding the houses locked and unattended they would commit the theft. One of the accused Shallu was sent to judicial custody, while the remaining two were remanded in police custody till June 18. |

Mohali, June 17 Notably, Shergill’s decomposed body was recovered in an Ertiga car, which was found parked on a pavement along a park in a residential colony in Sector 69 here on May 21 morning. Mohali SSP Inder Mohan Singh admitted that despite their all efforts, the police are yet to make any headway in the case. “We have cross-examined the victim’s family members, his friends, women with whom the victim was found involved, their (the women) close relatives, his security guard and several other persons. Apart from that, call details of the victim’s cellphone numbers have been minutely scrutinised, but we have not been able to get any clue so far,” said the SSP. “We have been working on various theories to crack the case, but we are now banking upon the call and message details of one cellphone, which was found in the damaged condition in the car later. The phone has been sent for forensic examination. We might get some lead in the case after receiving the forensic report of the cellphone,” said SSP Bhatti. On being asked when the police would get the report in question, the SSP said: “We are pursuing the matter with laboratory officials. We hope to get the forensic report soon”. |

25 arrested for consuming liquor at public places
Chandigarh, JUNE 17 The police said Saravjit Singh, resident of Raipur Khurd, was arrested while consuming liquor near his house at a public place. Likewise, Heera Lal, resident of Phase-1, Industrial Area, was nabbed. The police also arrested Akash Thappa, Upender Parshad and Bhanu, residents of Phase II, Ramdarbar; Gaurav, Surender and Vikas, residents of Sector 30; Mohan and Dhani Ram of village Daria; Dimply Kumar of Mohali; Happy and Madan Goapal of Sector 47; Kamal Kumar and Kamlesh Kumar of Mohali. Others arrested for the offence were Money of Sector 48, Sarwan Kumar of village Faidan, Vijay Kumar of village Burail, Suraj Gupta, resident of Sector 45; Ram Niwas of Sector 52, Pardeep Kumar of Sector 25; Aslam of Village Kajheri, Dharmohinder Kumar of Village Burail, Baldev Singh of Dhanas, Kala Ram and Seth Pal of Maloya Colony, Balwinder Singh of Sector 41-A, and Harkesh of Sector 54. All the persons were arrested under Section 68-1-14 of the Excise Act and later bailed out. One held with drugs The police on Tuesday arrested a person carrying 104 capsules of Spasmocip Plus. The accused Wasim, a resident of Hallo Majra, was nabbed from Phase-II, Industrial Area. |

Dhanas resident thrashed
A resident of Dhanas was injured after he was attacked by three unidentified persons on Monday night. Amit, a resident of Milk Colony, Dhanas, alleged that three unidentified persons thrashed and threatened his friend Rahul, resident of village Sarangpur. Amit told the police that Rahul was attacked while he was passing through the Kabari market, Dhanas. The three unidentified persons came from behind him and thrashed him. Rahul received injuries and was admitted to the PGI. The police have registered a case of causing hurt (323) wrongful restraint (341), criminal intimidation (506), IPC, at the Sector 11 police station. The police said personal enmity appears to be the reason behind the incident. 2 motorbikes stolen Two motor vehicle thefts have been reported in the last 24 hours. In the first incident, Sandeep Singh, resident of Mauli Jagran, reported that someone stole his motorcycle (CH-03V-4440) from Phase-1, Industrial Area. Himanshu Dhameja, resident of Sector 22, reported that someone has stolen his motorcycle (HP-03C-3702) from the Information Technology Park. Woman’s gold chain snatched Meanwhile, a woman became a victim of snatching here on Monday. Navneet Kaur, resident of Phase 3B2, Mohali, alleged that the motorcycle-borne youth snatched her gold chain and fled. Kaur said the incident took place in Sector 35. She could not note down the number of the vehicle. Fraud case registered Raman Kumar, resident of village Mullanpur Garibdass, Mohali, has alleged that he was cheated of Rs 13 lakh in a land deal. Kumar alleged that Sanjay Kumar, resident of Sector 20, Panchkula, and Rajnish Kaushal of Sector 39 B, cheated him of Rs 13.50 lakh in connection with the sale of a flat. Raman said he paid the amount to both the accused but did not get the possession or papers of the flat. Want to be among top players, says Rishab Sharda
Chandigarh, June 17 He won the ATF Asian Ranking Junior Tennis Tournament that concluded on Sunday. In the final, he defeated his opponent even after going down in the first game. He started his career at the age of 10 years. He had not only performed in local tournaments, but also recorded victories in competitions held in other parts of the country. Rishab, a student of St John’s High School, Sector 26, has 16 titles of All-India Tennis Association (AITA) in his kitty, including his maiden AITA title won in 2011. “I am working hard to improve my game. This year, so far, was a high-pitch affair in terms of facing opponents and tough competitions. The recently concluded AITA’s Mumbai tennis tournament was a good platform that helped me to win this (Asian ranking) tournament,” said Rishab, who won the cup at the CLTA courts, Sector 10, his home ground. In the recently concluded Mumbai national tennis event, he reached in the semifinals but lost after giving a tough fight. Not losing his heart, he contributed well in Chandigarh’s win in the double’s category, in the same tournament. “I am getting into my peak form. I want to be among the top 10 players of the junior category in India. I am performing my daily practice sessions at the CLTA courts under the guidance of Gajinder Singh. I play in singles’ and doubles’ category to set my base in both events. I would preferably continue to play in both categories. Even in this Asian ranking tournament that concluded on Sunday, I and my partner clinched the title with ease,” said Rishab. Earlier, he hogged the limelight by winning the Talent Hunt Series for boys (U-14) where he won all matches and outclassed his rivals in 2013 and also won the top honours in various national-level competitions. He also reached the second round of Finesta Open Tennis Championship for Boys (U-16) and also participated in the HSBC ‘Road to Wimbledon’ held at Delhi. In the recent months, besides winning the all- India level AITA tournaments, he also won the tennis championship at Ambala for boys (U-16) and won a silver medal in the tennis event of nationals organised by the School Games Federation of India. At present, Rishab is playing in the Super Series Tennis Championship, being held in Dehradun, and has successfully entered the third round of the tournament. |

Sectors 63, 78 get swimming, badminton coaching centres
Mohali, June 17 This was stated by Kahan Singh Pannu, secretary, Youth Welfare, Punjab, while inaugurating swimming and badminton coaching centres in Sectors 63 and 78 here today. Pannu said experienced coaches had been appointed at these centres. He appealed to the public to benefit from the coaching centres. He said youth clubs in the villages had been provided with sports kits, which would motivate the youth and also help remove drug addiction among the young generation. Tejinder Singh Dhaliwal, Director, Sports, Punjab, said modern facilities had been provided at the coaching centres. Manmohan Singh, district sports officer, said for the coaching centres, registration of 500 swimmers and badminton players had been done. Children and youth were showing a huge interest in these sports, he said. |

Rohit is the only player from Chandigarh who will participate in the camp. The selected squad will represent India in the upcoming 17th Asian Games-2014 Soft Tennis Championship to be held in Korea. |
