BJP holds executive meeting in Azad’s native place Bhaderwah

Jammu, June 14
The two-day executive committee meeting of the state BJP unit started in Bhaderwah town today evening. The meeting is aimed at devising a strategy for the much-publicised “mission-44 plus” as the BJP wants to form its own government in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting is part of follow-up action of the meeting of the core group of the state unit which met with BJP national president and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at New Delhi earlier this week.

The decision of the BJP to hold the meeting at Bhaderwah assumes importance because Bhaderwah is the native place of Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and the party has chosen it as a venue to start preparations for the Assembly elections.

Sources in the BJP said the party had decided to hold the meeting at Azad’s native place to give a message to its opponent that the party (BJP) was going all offensive against the Congress in the Assembly elections like in the Lok Sabha polls.

Although the Congress has not officially announced Azad as its chief ministerial candidate for the Assembly elections, there is a feeling among the BJP leaders that it is a high time to force the opponent on the defensive much before the announcement of the Assembly elections, scheduled in November this year.

The Bhaderwah Assembly segment is part of erstwhile Doda district which is a citadel of the Congress and the BJP is trying to make inroads into this region. In the 2008 Assembly elections, the Congress had won five of the six Assembly segments in the region.

In the recently held Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad, despite a strong Modi Wave, had got lead in all six segments of the region. Azad lost the Lok Sabha elections by more than 60,000 votes but managed to get the lead in erstwhile Doda district.

Sources said in the first session of today’s meeting, party leaders were told to identify Assembly segments where the party had no competition. The party leaders were also told to identify seats where the party could rope in leaders of other parties for the Assembly elections.

Damage to transformers in Jammu triggers protests
Residents gherao Arnia police station, torch Janipur electricity division
Tribune News Service

Jammu, June 14
Incidents of transformers getting burnt due to overloading amid the searing heatwave conditions have triggered protests across the Jammu region. In two incidents on Saturday, angry people, including women, in the border belt of Arnia in Bishnah tehsil of Jammu district took out a protest and gheraoed the Arnia police station.

Reports from Arnia said people from wards 10 and 11 staged protest demonstrations against the PDD in the morning and gheraoed the Arnia police station.

They raised slogans against the local MLA and protested the inordinate delay on the part of the PDD in replacing or repairing the 250-KVA transformer that was damaged a week back.

They served an ultimatum on the PDD to restore the transformer within a day or two, failing which they would block the RS Pora-Arnia road.

In Jammu, men and women from Vikas Nagar torched the Janipur maintenance and repairs electricity division and allegedly manhandled the PDD staff.

Consequently, the PDD authorities lodged a complaint at the Janipur police station. A police officer confirmed that a complaint was lodged.

Assistant Executive Engineer Suresh Sudan said the 400-KVA transformer which replaced the heavily overloaded 250-KVA transformer at Vikas Nagar a few days ago failed to take the load and got burnt on Friday.

“Around 80 persons torched the Janipur maintenance and repairs electricity division and manhandled and abused the staff. We have lodged a complaint with the police,” he said.

The PDD largely blamed the people for the frequent damage to power transformers during peak summer, citing power pilferage as the reason.

PDP expresses concern over financial crisis
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, June 14
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday expressed serious concern over the prevailing financial crisis in Jammu and Kashmir. In a press note, chief spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic PartyNaeem Akhtar said it was sad that the treasury was empty, affecting work on social sector schemes and having an impact on people, particularly contractors and employees.

“It is not the first time that such a situation has arisen in the state. In the past, people have had to face problems on account of the government’s failure on the fiscal front,” he said.

“Shortage of funds has become the hallmark of this inefficient government, which is least bothered about the people,” he alleged.

The PDP spokesman said the fiscal scenario had affected not only contractors and employees, but also a large number of claimants seeking general provision fund and gratuity.

Naeem said the government had brought the state to a position where everything was in ruins.

He said work on genuine projects of public utility had been suspended for want of funds.

The party spokesman alleged that government agents in the construction business, in league with politicians, had conceived and executed projects for which funds had been provided under the table.

Bhat’s rearrest has come despite the Supreme Court direction issued on March 22, 2013, wherein the J&K Government had been told to give the separatist leader at least a week’s notice before detaining him again.
