Drunken driving: Girl among four revellers injured
Chandigarh, June 13 The injured have been identified as Navdeep, who was driving the car, and his friends Ravi, Ankush and Annanya. All were reportedly under the influence of liquor at the time of mishap. The police have booked Navdeep under Sections 337 (endangering life) and 427 (damaging public property) of the IPC and Section 185 (drunken driving) and 79 (rash driving) of the Motor Vehicle Act. The case was registered after Aananya recorded her statement. The incident took place at about 12.30 am when the Swift car, bearing a Punjab registration number, coming from Sector 23 turned towards Sector 17 and rammed into the roundabout. The youths told the police that they were going to drop Ananya at Sector 42. Navdeep, Ravi and Ankush hail from Abohar and are studying in the city. The police said the group of friends, who were in their 20s, were returning from the Buzz lounge in Sector 17 after attending a party. The police was informed by a passerby who had rushed the youngsters to the Government Multi Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16. A Chandigarh Police constable, Narender, posted with the security of the UT SSP was injured after he was hit by a car on the road separating Sectors 16 and 17. The accident took place at around 10 am when Narender, who was on a bike, was going from the Sectors 9/10/16/17 roundabout to Sector 16 and was hit by a Swift car coming from the Sector 16 stadium side. The cop was in civil dress and not on duty at the time of mishap. Krishan Kumar, a resident of Sector 39, was driving the car. The police said the car driver jumped the yellow light and rammed into Narender’s bike. The cop, who sustained injuries in his head and arms, was rushed to the Government Multi Speciality Hospital

Chandigarh, June 13 Meanwhile, Thanawat Thirapongpaeboon of Thailand also claimed his maiden ONGC Asian Under-21 Snooker title. Thanawat defeated Siyavosh Mozayani of Iran 6-1 to win the championship. The trophies were presented to the winners by Punjab PWD Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon. In his final match Sourav started off on a strong foot by taking 3-0 lead. Alok was lucky to win the fourth game but Sourav had no interest in giving any loose strings as he returned with two more breaks win to widen the gap 5-1. When everyone was presuming the match to finish soon, Alok tried to put some pressure on Sourav by winning two more games. But Sourav again hit a break of 99 points to claim his maiden title. In the ONGC Asian U-21 final, the first frame was won by Siyavosh 66-38 but after that the much experienced and more determined Thanawat ruled out any chance for him and with strong potting kept winning frame after frame to claim his title. It may be recalled that Thanawat had won the World Under-21 Snooker Championship in 2011 at Montreal, Canada, and had been on professional tour after that. This is his first presence in amateurs after returning from professionals tour. Now, after winning the Asian Under-21 title, he has earned a ticket for the World Professional Tour for the next season. |

Chandigarh, June 13 Reeling at 78 for 4, skipper Gitansh Khera’s knock of 57 runs off 82 balls inclusive of seven boundaries and one six helped the team to recover. He was equally supported by Ankit Pursharthy, who scored an unbeaten knock of 79 off 209 balls with eight boundaries. Meanwhile, Sandeep Singh scored 80 off 93 balls with 10 boundaries and two sixes, his knock also added to the 112 runs partnership for the seventh wicket with Ankit Pursharthy before he got bowled out on Sachin’s ball. For Chandigarh, the best bowling spells were bowled by Sachin Rawat who picked four wickets for 43 and Gurinder Singh who picked two wickets for 94 runs. In another match between Patiala and Mohali, the former team took charge of the match after winning the toss at PCA Stadium, Mohali. Patiala elected to field first. The hosts got all out for 194 in 75.2 overs. While chasing a small total, Patiala scored 57 for no loss in 17 overs. For Mohali, Kunal Mahajan and Manual Jain put on 81 runs partnership for the second wicket with Kunal scoring 52 off 71 balls inclusive of eight boundaries before being trapped in front by Amaninder. While, Manual Jain scored 40 runs off 160 balls. including five boundaries. Hosts Mohali kept losing wickets at regular intervals and from 134 runs for 3 in 51.3 overs they quickly crumbled for 194 in 75.2 overs. From Patiala, Amaninder Singh picked two wickets by giving 38 runs. In reply, Patiala were 57 without loss in 17 overs with Prabhjot and Kunwar Raina remaining unbeaten on 31 and 24, respectively. |
City lad makes it to Mohun Bagan Football Academy

Elated Chirag, who’s joy knew no bounds, said, “My father Kanwar Vinod Kumar who himself has been a former international footballer inspired and motivated me to sweat out hard on the grounds.” The 16-year-old defender, who has been training on the grounds since the age of 11, said, “I have played in five nationals but dream is to represent India and play for senior team of Mohun Bagan.” The selection trials for the academy were held between May 23 to June 2 at Kolkata, where around 1,100 footballers participated. Only 25 players from across the country were selected for the academy training. The young footballer added that for the selection he had toiled for five hours daily in the field for one year. He said, “It was daily practice and guidance along with coaching by my father that helped me earn a berth in the academy.” Gripped in the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup- 2014 the young lad said his favorite team was Brazil. However, he said, “My favourite player is Sérgio Ramos from Spain.” |

Chandigarh, June 13 Starting from the beginning Rishabh dominated the match with his ground strokes. Being careful and decisive in his shot selections he maintained an upper hand throughout the game. After winning the match next he would face Sacchit Sharma who defeated Saurav Kalkal in a marathon three setter match that lasted over three hours. Meanwhile, in the girls category, CLTA trainee sixth seed Prinkle Singh lost to fourth seed Mahak Jain. Mahak will be playing second seed Shivani Amineni in the finals. In the doubles category, CLTA trainee Rishabh Sharda and his partner Rithvik Bollipalli won the doubles title by defeating another CLTA trainee Sahishnu Sharma and his partner Lakshay Gupta 6-1, 6-0 in a one-sided match. |
Local skater Sarthak Grover sets record
Panchkula, June 13 The event was held on June 5 and 6 this year. It was organised by Shiv Ganga Roller Skating Club, Belgaum. Around 150 people of various age groups participated in the event. Sarthak outshone the 100 successful participants and grabbed the record in his kitty. Sarthak Grover is the only participant from the tricity who achieved this position and brought laurels. |
NIS to conduct lifeguard course from July 15
Chandigarh, June 13 The officials informed that the eligibility criteria for selection was minimum Class XII pass and the candidate must be a position holder in a district championship or should have state/university level participation. The selection will include the timing recorded in swimming trial. The age limit for players is between 20 to 40 years. The last date for submission of application forms is June 25. — TNS |
