Working out wonders!
Fitness is becoming a way of life for most people today. So, how can gyms not become state-of-the-art? Here's a look at some in the City Beautiful
Mona

The first poster boy of gyms Salman Khan has led the pack of hot-bods from the front. Decades on, Salman still makes the poster boy but the gyms have undergone a major transformation. From bulky equipment that made one run and sweat, the compact tools today provide intense workout that lessen the labour and the time put in.

Move over the conventional treadmill and bench press, city gyms have diversified from just places of exercise to centres of holistic wellness. Chetan Sharma, who has been fond of body-building, has continued to remain true to bench-press and dumbbells, but does notice the sea-change the gyms have witnessed in the recent years. "The elite today want to get in shape without really sweating it out, so come in the latest equipment that caters to just that," says Chetan. Equipment like leg pressing machine or pullover jogger let you enjoy a full body workout while in sitting position. And this is not all!

Well planned

With a growing demand for customised workouts and quick results, Leena Mogre's Fitness has worked out the concept of life coaches. Herein you have a coach who not only plans the workout, but even diet. While the specialised equipment is more effective, functional training that uses slides, elastic bands and 'mooshoo' balls provides a welcome change from the gym routine. "Our diets go beyond blood type and regular ones. Our combination diets are pretty popular; their USP — they provide nutrition and lead to a very positive change in the way you look and feel," says Priya Garg, director, Leena Mogre's Fitness in Sector 8. If you want to go beyond there is Dance Fitness, Salsa and Contemporary at their dance studio Engine Room.

Fitness mix

Combo Fitness class at Exotica Gym, Sector 16, Panchkula, mixes yoga with aerobics. While aerobics improves stamina, yoga builds up strength and flexibility. "We use a variety of workouts. Meditation is also a significant part of this plan that not only burns calories but leads to weight loss too and happy mental state," says fitness expert, Vishal Thukral.

Expert hand

At Wellness Lounge in Hotel Mountview and Shivalikview, you can take services of the Oxy Gym, Aqua Pool and Spa all in one place. You can break the gym routine by a swim or indulge in sauna or spa post workout, all under an expert eye. Latest equipment and personal trainers ensure each body part gets day by day exercise.

Outdoor experience

Bodyzone Fitness & SPA-9 has created outdoor experience within the gym. The new Roc Id equipment provides a whole body workout and there are choices aplenty. The personal training-cum-boot camp studio uses one's body weight as a tool for exercise. Cross Fit and TRX are some of the famous workouts worldwide for Gen Now. "For those who are not motivated by the traditional gym, we have designed a variety of programmes." says Vikram Kapoor, general manager Body Zone.

Filmi chakkar
Producer Rahul Mittra comes across as a straightforward person. He believes it is the demand of his profession…
Jasmine Singh
Rahul Mittra
CANDID TALK: Rahul Mittra

He is a startling, yet an interesting contraction of any image you have of a film producer. He bombards you with anecdotes from his life, talks about how he wrote his first poem when he was eight — a reaction to when his mother slapped him — that got published in The Tribune. In passing reference, he takes you through his career (an ex-journalist, an ex-PR consultant for a travelling firm…it doesn't end), his stint with producing successful Hindi projects Sahib Biwi aur Gangster, Bullet Raja , Revolver Rani…there is not even a single dry moment with successful film producer Rahul Mittra!

There are no hidden fears about money and returns, success and failure; he would rather talk about other interesting things like how he has taken to Bollywood and yes, his new plans of producing a Punjabi film that brings him to Chandigarh. Born and brought up in the city, Rahul calls a visit to the place a ritual before and after the starting and ending of the film. "I have to do it, I crave for a connect to the city," he says.

By the way, you cannot ignore his filmi side, especially when he tells you that he has acted (small appearance) in all his films. "I have grown up watching films in the theatre, so at a very early age I had my lessons in love, revenge, romance and lust," Rahul doesn't make any extra effort to add masala to the conversation — he was born with it. In between the conversation, you can't help reminding yourself that he is a producer — the money bag. "Well, let's say I provide after sales service," he comes up with this one instantly.

Rahul is here to invest in Punjabi films and nothing at all, not even the straightforward facts about the state of Punjabi films, brings in iota of doubt. "Convince me," he makes his point. "I haven't seen many Punjabi films; those I have seen were the cult. I am not saying I will give a cult or romcom, but I am definitely going to go for it." The confidence is backed by strong reasoning. "I will take my time to understand the distribution here, how things work; I can't be unfair to others with me. In a jungle nothing goes for waste." The last line makes you look at him again. "Nothing that I have learnt in life or anything that I was involved in has gone waste. I know what I am doing, at least now I can say this," adds Rahul, who is step by step breaking the stereotypes of producers.

"This is what I would want to change here," says Rahul who is going to be honoured on September 5 as the path-breaking producer in Oslo at the Norway Bollywood Film Festival. "First I thought it was some kind of a joke, well it is not," he throws his head back in laughter. So a money bag attracts a lot of attention, doesn't he? "The only condition I asked for while moving in a building in Mumbai was that I didn't want any film star in that space," he says as a mater of fact. It is a different case that a few actors have taken a fancy to his lovely kids!

However, the producer knows the art of detachment. "It's important, I can't be hanging out with anybody and everybody…if I did that, I could not have done my work," shares Rahul who is about to mention another interesting and very filmi incident about his marriage. "We'll talk about this next time," he looks at his wife seated close by. She smiles. A total filmi producer…not the one we've seen before!

Blurring shades
While men are going for brighter colours nowadays, women prefer the masculine look. Unisex fashion is certainly the order of the day
Gurvinder Singh

Looking at the bright footwear, the skinny jeans below a neon-coloured floral shirt, one gets ready to compliment the girl for her fashion sense only, just in time, one realises it is a man! The boundaries of male and female fashion are surely blurring at a rapid rate.

While males are looking for feminine cuts, females are turning towards the masculine look. The bright trousers, just above the shoes or loafers, exposing ankles, might have been considered feminine a few years back, the trend has become a rage with men in the recent past. Even the colours that men wear, including pink and other bright ones, were till not so long ago considered the domain of women. Accessories too, including the shoes, have become really colourful. "Pink, at one time, was symbolic of feminine grace, but that is no longer the case," opines Aman, an ardent fashion follower.

Gundeep, a faculty member at INIFD, Ludhiana, also believes that the boundaries of fashion between men and women are fast getting erased. "It is becoming more 'unisex' with time. Scarves are increasingly being worn by men nowadays. Even youngsters wear scarves as casual fashion," she says.

Women used to wear simple, small watches earlier, but the size and styles have now definitely come much closer to what men wear. Says Surbhi Mahendru, a model, "Men use much brighter colours now whereas more and more women wear designs that were earlier considered to be masculine. Women have started looking cool and dynamic wearing the aviators."

"Pairing up a nice pair of jeans with aviators completes the fantastic look," says Ritika, a student. "There are belts, shirts and polo t-shirts that are driving unisex fashion," she adds.

Noteworthy feeling

If you are wondering who cares to prepare the perfect summer cocktail of tunes to soothe the weary nerves of your ears, here's a clear demarcation of good music from noise. Topping the UK top 40 and UK dance charts is Rowan Harrington, better known by his stage name, SecondCity, with his brand new single I Wanna Feel. With the song that reads, I wanna feel, we are certain that you'll surely shout "I wanna hear"- Once more perhaps! Here's how some of those who heard the song reciprocated to its sound!

Getting groovy

I really like the track. It is groovy and what I like the most about the song is the quality of sound and the use of synthesiser. It is refreshing and very trippy.

Good vibes

I wake up to this song every morning. It's got a nice vibe to it that peps one up and the lyrics are pretty catchy too. I like dancing to it every time I hear this song.

It's a groovy song and since I am fond of house music, I have taken rather fondly to this song. I like the music of the track.

Saving the planet

World-renowned environment filmmaker, Mike Pandey's show, Earth Matters, returns with season four from June 8, every Sunday at 10.30 am only on DD channel. While the series has been running without a break, the last few weeks saw DD repeating older programmes. Directed and produced by Pandey, Earth Matters, takes a hard look at the state of the environment, the diminishing natural resources, the fast disappearing forest cover, endangered wildlife, urban pollution, and the pressures on rural India.

Like the previous seasons, the 26-episode series will be commencing on Sunday as it will provide solutions and remedial action that each individual can take at his own level to save the earth. Shot in the HD format, the series has already won accolades internationally. It has also led to the creation of Earth Matters Clubs all over the country with young people, particularly in rural or semi-urban areas, working to put into action the suggestions given in the programme to improve the ecology and fight climate change.

Telly time

An example to follow

Abhay Deol practices what he preaches. He is building an eco-friendly home in Goa with solar panels for heating water and rain-water harvesting set-up. That is amazing and inspiring!

Rat-race of promos

Sajid Nadiadwala has flown in a group of VFX guys from Singapore and promo editors from Los Angeles to cut the first look of Kick. There is a huge buzz around the movie.

In the thick of things

Take a good look at Rani Mukerji while she's shooting for Mardaani. She returned a month after marriage and this is the last schedule of the film.

What’s in a voice

Amitabh Bachchan will lend his powerful voice to Shamitabh and also sing in the movie. This is his third outing with R Balki after Paa and Cheeni Kum.

The moot point

It has been heard that "Students Of The Year" Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra had an argument at Karan Johar's birthday party and other party people had to intervene to stop them. Sidharth denied the incident.

The girl’s going places

Kriti Sanon is just one film old and she has already bagged a huge cola endorsement, thereby joining the ranks of the company's previous ambassadors, who are also a part of the young brigade. She is the youngest and the newest ambassador. Lucky girl!

Meet Bollywood’s unlikely pairs
We have conventional good-looking pairs in Bollywood like Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor or Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh but some upcoming movies have very odd pairs. Take a look

Like chalk and cheese

Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao: She is glamourous and prim and proper and Rajkummar Rao is not a looker but he is phenomenally talented. The unlikely pair comes together in Dolly Ki Doli, produced by Arbaaz Khan.

Age is just a number

Vidya Balan and Ali Fazal: Ali, whose last performance was in Fukrey, has been paired opposite Vidya in Bobby Jasoos. Vidya is a senior star compared to Fazal who obviously looks younger than her too. But as they say, age is just a number.

An odd couple

Nazwazuddin Siddique and Chitrangda Singh: He is known for his gritty roles. Her last memorable outing was Yeh Saali Zindagi. They are together in an untitled comic thriller. We wonder how their camaraderie would be.

As different as it gets

Shahid Kapoor and Tabu: In Haider, they are supposed to play stepmother and son but apparently, there is a twisted romantic angle between them. Our interest is piqued by romantic liaison between the serious actress and the baby-faced actor.

Two stars come together

Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone: They have a nineteen year age gap between them. Irrfan is known for his intense roles and for breaking through into Hollywood. Deepika has become a star performer and has a splendid box office record. They will be seen in Shoojit Sircar's Piku.
