Friends from another world
India’s first alien comedy TV show, the upcoming Badi Dooooor Se Aaaye Hain is an attempt to derive humour out of diversity and blend it with a strong social message
Manpriya Singh

Last checked, there were only Small Wonder and I Dream of Jeannie; with due respect to the dubbed version and their desi replicas, super-humans and aliens remain an unchartered territory on Indian television. Which is why before everything else, the creative team and cast of SAB TV takes pride in announcing India's first alien comedy TV series. Even the title shares the limelight a little later and with the right emphasis on Badi Dooooor Se Aaaye Hain. Equate the five Os with space and make friends with a family of five that has come from far, really far.

Shares Anooj Kapoor, business head, SAB TV, "This show is extremely original in its format and is neither inspired nor adapted from any English serial. Our creative team was very clear that they wanted to do something out of this world because we have already touched every subject about this world." Joining him at the promotional unveiling in Chandigarh is the cast member and a familiar face on television, Sumeet Raghavan. As a character that has stepped on earth from somewhere… is he endowed with any super powers? "The family of five does have superpowers, but we will reveal them slowly as the serial progresses."

It is an attempt to derive humour out of diversity and blend it with a strong social message. If aliens were to step on Mother Earth, they would find mankind and its ways difficult and dishonest. While comedy is a familiar turf, the chance to play an alien was a first experience. Shares Sumeet, "I have seen serials like Small Wonder and I Dream of Jeannie, but there was never a conscious endeavour to prepare for the role." Meanwhile, Holiday has just released where, 'I play a police inspector and there is also an upcoming Marathi film. I am active in theatre as well and have been doing this Marathi play titled Lekure Udhand Jhali."

Super effort

The other cast members include Tanaaz Irani, Bakhtiyar Irani, Rupali Bhosle, among others. Thrown in the show is, "a Punjabi inspector who speaks multiple languages, he is quite a character in the serial,' promises JD Majethia. The guy the audience remembers from Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai and Khichdi, goes behind the curtains and dons a producer's role through his Hats-Off Productions. Acting will happen provided it is an offer for a role unexplored. "I am interested in doing reality shows or if they offer me anchoring or action. These are the things I haven't done before." Khichdi-2, might be on cards too but as of now, this serial it is. "It is fresh and comic and it has taken intensive work and research for the past 6-7 months."

It's hard to picture superpowers sans special effects. He points, "You'll see ample special effects since it is a sci-fi comedy. The crash landing of aliens that happens in promos actually injured two women." Well, a symbol of what's to come. The aliens battle with the baffling human phenomenon like love, rat-race, concept of God, corruption et al!

Don’t mind!
Imagine someone getting into your mind and reading your thoughts. Lior Suchard is just the man who can surprise you...
Amarjot Kaur

How would you possibly react to someone who can read your mind? Would you feel scared at the intrusion or would you be intrigued by the phenomenon that borders on the lines of the supernatural? Well, actually, Lior Suchard prefers calling it a "par-natural ability", which allows him to visit the most secret and personal corners of your mind. Perhaps that won him the title of 'Best Mentalist' in the world on German TV show Pro 7. Interestingly, he is not allowed inside any casino in the world because of his special abilities!

In conversation with Lior Suchard, a supernatural entertainer, who will be in Chandigarh to perform at Park Plaza, Zirakpur on June 14, we stand acquainted with his mind reading skills and much more. Lior first created a storm when he was selected as the winner of highly rated international TV show The Successor to officially take over the celebrated mystifier, Uri Geller, and since then, he has performed across 42 countries and regularly appeared on prime time TV.

Power of belief

"I discovered my ability at the age of 6, when I started moving objects with my mind. I used to play the famous child's game where you need to find a coin hidden in one of the hands and I was always right," says Lior, who is adept at telepathy, clairvoyance, divination, precognition, psycho kinesis, mind control, memory feats and rapid mathematics! He holds a firm opinion that what he does is not supernatural or magic, but it treads somewhere between the understanding of science, belief, intuition and par-natural. "What I do is essentially an 'ability' and if one believes, one can read the mind as well. However, like I say, everybody can learn how to play the piano, but not everyone can become Vladimir Horowitz," he smiles.

Complete showman

Lior has done several shows, including Barbra Streisand's birthday, Jay Leno, Nita Ambani's Birthday, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton and Novak Djokovics's birthday. However, the only constant in his shows has been his tremendous ability to entertain and evade the scary or shocking while coating his acts with a subtle sense of humour. "I guess my favourite act is when I ask people a very intimate question, probably the name of their first romantic interest, and get it right each time. It's quite entertaining!" he says.

Pleasing persona
Miss India-World Navneet Kaur Dhillon wants to be a part of meaningful cinema
Gurvinder Singh

Unlike typical straight-face and 'static' models, she loves interacting and talking to people. "I can't stop talking," says Miss India-World Navneet Kaur Dhillon. She looks gregarious when smiling, ravishing when she's not and bubbly when she's talking, but graceful in all her avatars. Navneet loves to express; the reason why the ramp was not enough for the young star. She is all set for her role before the camera with a Bollywood movie. "I can't disclose the name of the film at the moment. But would be announced in a month or so,” she says.

Acting and expressing was something she was always inclined towards, the reason she took up B-Tech in TV, Film Production and Media Technology. She is in the third year of the course at Punjabi University, Patiala. No wonder, she was crowned Miss Multimedia at the Miss World event last year!

Even in acting, she would like to experiment and work in good films. "There are some movies that are big commercial successes, but still bad ones. I would like to do good movies. The script and the director are more important to me than who the co-stars are," says the actor. She has even made a documentary on female foeticide as part of her course and feels deeply for the cause. Navneet is also working with some NGO's for this cause.

As her father is an army officer, she has lived in different parts of the country and has friends all over the country. Her defence background has also gone into making her confident. “One of the reasons why so many of the beauty pageant winners, including Lara Dutta, Sushmita Sen and Priyanka Chopra, are from the defence background is that it gives them exposure of living in different cultures,” she says.

Listen to her speaking Hindi in UP accent and it is difficult to believe. Although she can't speak all the languages of the places she has lived at while growing up, she can definitely understand quite a bit of Bengali, Tamil and many other languages, apart from her flawless Punjabi!

"Being a student, I love interacting with students of different universities and institutes I visit," says the 21-year-old. As for her routine, "I love to walk. Even if I am out, I take the time out for a quick walk.” “I also take a lot of water," she signs off.

Talk of the town
Eating joint Ten Towns has expanded its menu to include Indian dishes
Jasmine Singh

Gaurav Sogi, owner of Ten Towns, Sector 26, Chandigarh, believes in a judicious mix of his creative and technical gifts. While the technical side gets him to talk about his professional degree in IT, the creative side is always whipping up ideas.

Gaurav Gogi
Gaurav Gogi

This time, he lets his creative side take the front seat, wherein he comes with an all new face for his eating joint. A place that is already famous for Mediterranean cuisine, it has now extended the menu to include Indian delicacies.

And before you scout the menu for it, a look around at Ten Town will bring out the subtle yet making-a-difference changes in the place. A private dining area, a seating capacity that can accommodate as many as 100 people, addition of live band performances every Wednesday as well as Saturday and everything served with the garnishing of fresh enthusiasm…the place sure is ready to give you something new.

"We wanted to satisfy all kinds of palates, so there is something for the grandchildren, for parents and grandparents, who would love the sight of dal makhani on their table," says Gaurav. Adding Indian cuisine makes the existing menu a bit more comprehensive. "An order that comprises Bruschettas, poppadums and butter chicken sure sounds interesting."

Gift a surprise
Manpriya Singh
Dinesh Mongia
Brand game: Dinesh Mongia

It's surprising that the launch invite skips the very name of the celebrity inaugurating the event. The invite by Zaira Diamonds proudly reads the launch of 'India's First Gift Card in Jewellery' but skips out the name of Dinesh Mongia.

Just when you've made your way through a sea of women, gracing the occasion, that someone whispers about the lost opportunity to interact with the ex-cricketer.

Anyways, the premium gift card, keeps in mind the basic need of its customers. The gift card can be purchased at any outlet with a minimum value of Rs 5,000 with the redemption value of ~5,500 with one year validity.

pet passion
A rare jewel
Rearing a camel as a pet is rarely heard of. In the case of Glenn Peat, it’s a reality
Poonam Bindra

Glenn Peat
FRIENDLY VIBES: Glenn Peat

“Keeping and rearing a different kind of animal as a pet is an adventure by itself and one has much to learn,” says Glenn Peat, manager, Hyatt Regency, Ludhiana, who is now enjoying the company of a camel! Glenn already has four horses as his pets and now has added a camel named ‘Mani’, meaning a jewel, to his tribe.

Always been fascinated by this “guy with a hump” (as he calls it), Glenn bought it from Amarpura village on the Pakistan border in Rajasthan. “The life of a camel and human beings is in the ratio of 1:6, so our fellow who is four years old is technically a young man,” he quips. As compared to the horses, camels are more demure and get aggressive only sometimes during the mating season.

Glenn who likes to ride ‘Mani’ four to five times a week has housed him at the Punjab Equine Sports Academy, along with the horses. They got a trainer along from Bikaner for some time and now Mani understands all the simple commands like sit, stand, run and stop. As a New Zealander, Glenn has grown up among all types of animals, right from guinea pigs, goats, hens to horses but he has never been that close to a camel. Also, he shares, that a camel is easier to maintain and affordable to buy and is not that temperamental. “The only difference is that when Mani gets aggressive he can kick from all sides with his four legs. One has to be very careful for one does not know where the kick is coming from,” says Glenn.

Fed with a mixture of ripe seeds of Ghohar phalli, kikar and Alum, this ‘ship of the dessert’ has settled quite comfortably in Ludhiana. His kids, Jennie and Ashley, too are very comfortable with ‘Mani’ and really looking forward to their rides with him. Grooming is not much of a problem for camels as they only have to be rubbed dry and not given a bath.

Finding a meaning

Filmistaan

Written and directed by Nitin Kakkar, Filmistaan is a film about a Mumbai-based affable Bollywood buff and wannabe actor Sunny, who works as an assistant director. While he dreams of becoming the next superstar in the industry, he fails at every audition. Undeterred, he goes with an American crew to remote areas in Rajasthan to work on a documentary.

A fine act

I totally love the film. It's a must watch. The finesse with which it has been made and the dexterity with which its underlying meaning is conveyed is sheer excellence.

Bhanuj Sharma, student

Different take

I really like the film because it deliberates on the power of cinema, which has the capacity to unite all mental barriers and physical boundaries. I am so glad that India is accepting this kind of experimental cinema.

Sachin Bhasin, freelance graphic designer

Class act

The best thing about the film is that while it retains the flavour of the typically classic Bollywood, it also has a sort of newness to it, which is very refreshing. I love everything about the film, right from the concept, to the actors.

Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty

Written and directed by AR Murugadoss, and produced by Vipul Shah, Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty, is a Bollywood action thriller film and it features Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles, along with Govinda in the supporting role. It is a remake of the 2012 Tamil film Thuppakki starring Vijay and Kajal Agarwal in lead roles, which was also directed by AR Murugadoss.

Action packed

It's a complete time pass film. Since I am a huge fan of Akshay Kumar, I really wanted to see him in the film, but there is nothing more to the movie except Akshay's effortlessly flawless action sequences.

Deepika Sharma, a private bank employee

One time watch

It's a typical action-oriented Bollywood drama and masala film, with nothing more to its credit. I'd say that one should only watch it if they really want to while away time.

She told a publication, "I'd want it to be on a beach somewhere, like Turks and Caicos."

Meet the new girl on the block

Anukriti Gusain, the finalist of Miss India 2013, was declared the fourth runner- up at Miss Asia Pacific World 2014 which was held in Seoul, South Korea. Anukriti, who hails from Lansdowne in Uttrakhand, had earlier also won two major sub-contests titled 'Miss Photogenic' and 'Miss Beautiful Smile' during Miss India 2013 pageant. This engineering student loves to play basketball and wishes to go on a vacation with Bollywood hunk Shahid Kapoor. In an exclusive conversation, we caught up with the 18-year-old beauty to reveal what's next for her...

How has been the journey?

It has been great. I never really thought that I would made it this far. I got to meet so many people throughout the competition and I made so many friends. I have been focused and determined. I gave my hundred per cent and I am happy with my achievement.

How do you stay fit?

I think I just understand my body. I can't diet. I love food but I eat healthy. That usually does for me. I also exercise from time to time.

How do you keep your skin glowing?

I like to lead a simple, happy and stress-free life. From emotional health to physical health, I believe your skin just reflects what happens to you in the inside. So it's important to stay healthy in every way.

One beauty tip that you would like to give?

It's easy to see what is outside but you can't see inside your body. So it's important that you understand your body type and take care of it accordingly. You should watch what you eat. Eat fruits and vegetables that have a lot of antioxidants. They will not only give you a glowing skin but also suffice your body's requirement for essential minerals and vitamins.

What's next for you?

Next for me is Bollywood. I'm currently in talks so let's see. I've always wanted to get into movies. Movies and songs have always inspired me as a kid. For me, it doesn't matter if how big my first movie will be. I am just here to do good work and be remembered for it.

Akshay Kumar’s action lessons

When Khiladi Kumar is in the house, the acts of daredevilry invariably follow suit. And that's exactly what happened when Akshay Kumar arrived on the sets of Zee TV's popular fiction show, Qubool Hai, to promote his up and coming action thriller, Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty. Not only did he perform action stunts, but he also gave tips on action sequences to the show's leading lady, Surbhi Jyoti, who has been an ardent fan of the superstar! Akshay was seen coaching her on the nuances of action scenes and giving her tips on how not to get hurt while performing them.

Sharing his experience Karanvir Bohra said, "Akshay is one of the most disciplined actors in the industry. One can learn so much by just observing him, but no one can reach his precision when it comes to doing an action sequence!"

Meanwhile, Surbhi Jyoti said, "There was palpable excitement on the sets during the shoot as we were in awe of Akshay, who performs his stunts with absolute ease and comfort. I picked up quite a few tips on action from Akshay during the shoot as I have always been a fan of the action genre and would love to perform stunts and fight sequences someday. He was thoroughly helpful and a complete gentleman!"
