Golden Temple clash
Security beefed up in city
Ludhiana, June 6
The city police were put on high alert after a clash between activists of the SAD (Amritsar) and the SGPC at Golden Temple in Amritsar that left six persons injured. DCP Nilambari Jagdale said security arrangements were made to tackle any eventuality and security outside all religious places was beefed up.
“We have deployed four companies of reserve battalion and paramilitary forces
outside all religious places,” said the DCP.
Commuters offered sweetened to mark the 30th anniversary of Operation Bluestar in Ludhiana on Friday.

Man who was stabbed 26 times dies
Ludhiana, June 6
After struggling for life for nearly 10 days, Jaspreet Singh Bawa, who was stabbed 26 times with an ice pick during a brawl, succumbed to injuries at a hospital here today.
The city police had arrested two persons, including Sandeep and Pankaj, following the stabbing incident.
Two constables arrested in Doraha
Khanna/Doraha, June 6
Two police constables posted at the Doraha police station have been arrested by the Khanna police. One of them has been arrested for selling drugs while the other has been nabbed in connection with the murder of a youth.

Food samples collected
Ludhiana, June 6
The Health Department today collected 13 food samples from various part of the city.
The District Health Officer, Dr Abnash Kumar, said the department today took samples of carrot marmalade and tamarind from a shop located on Brindaban Road. The samples of cottage cheese and milk were collected from a milk plant at Kanganwal village.

After many marriage palace owners were found overcharging for liquor
served during parties, the Excise and Taxation Department has revised
the rates according to different brands. It has fixed the maximum sale
price of different brands. While earlier rate lists were issued
according to different categories, now a brand wise list has been
issued.
Date for payment of property tax
extended
Ludhiana, June 6
The Punjab Government has extended
the last date for payment of property tax for 2013-14 till June 30,
2014. The Joint Commissioner-cum-Nodal Officer (Property Tax) of the
Municipal Corporation said the city residents could now deposit their
self-assessed property tax at the Suvidha centres set up in the zonal
and sub-zonal offices of the MC as well as at the designated branches of
HDFC Bank without any penalty or interest. — OC
Buildings razed
Ludhiana, June 6
A team of the MC building branch today pulled down commercial
buildings. Assistant Town Planner (Zone D) of the MC, said the basement and ground floor of three shops in Ghumar Mandi were demolished as the commercial complex was being constructed without an approved building plan. A building under construction near Gaushala was also razed for the same reason.
The team partially demolitished a complex on Humbran Road for violations of the approved building.

Poor infrastructure cripples PUDA market

Allottees of the Old Jail Road Commercial Scheme of Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) are a harassed lot. On one hand, the PUDA authorities have failed to provide promised basic infrastructure in the shop-cum-offices (SCOs) and shops in pocket I and II of the scheme while on the other, the allottees were being made to pay non-construction fine (NCF) for failure to carry out construction at the site within three years of allotment.

No science stream at govt school worries students
Ludhiana, June 6
Students of Government Senior Secondary School, Pamal, have been left in lurch due to the decision of the Education Department to close down the science stream for Classes XI and XII. The decision has been taken considering the inadequate numbers of students at school.
City grabs BCom-III top positions

Students of the city have clinched eight positions out of the top ten positions in the Panjab University BCom final year examination. The top three positions have been secured by the students of the Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management from the city.

Fire breaks out in Ladhowal forest
Ludhiana, June 6
Panic gripped residents at Ladhowal after a fire broke out in the forest area. The scorching heat is suspected to be the cause of the fire.
The Division Forest Officer (DFO) said forest rangers had been deployed to investigate the cause of the fire. They will also assess the loss of green cover in the fire.

2 held with 300 gm drug powder

The police arrested two alleged drug peddlers, including a woman, and seized 300 gm of drug powder from them in two separate operations during the last 24 hours in the area. The accused have been identified as Gurwinder Singh and Rukmani, both the residents of Mullanpur Dakha.
Thief nabbed

The city police have nabbed a man, who had stolen Rs 50,000 from a
co-passenger, on May 30. The accused has been identified as Sanjay Kumar
of Ambedker Nagar in Model Town. The case was registered on the
complaint of Surinder Kumar of Ghuman Nagar in Sirhind.
