Intense heat scorches North, 3 die in Hisar

Chandigarh, June 6
Intense heat wave conditions prevailed in Punjab and Haryana with mercury hovering above 44 degree Celsius across both the states. Hisar was the hottest place at 46.5 degree Celsius, up by five notches above normal, Met department said here today. Three deaths were reported from Hisar due to suspected heatstroke during the past three days.

Nihal Singh (67) is suspected to have died due to excessive heat at Jagaan village on Wednesday. Nihal was rushed to hospital after he collapsed while working in fields at noon. He soon died. The doctors, who performed the post- mortem on the body, suspect that he might have died of heatstroke.

Two more persons have reportedly perished due to the excessive heat. Anil, around 40, of Sabji Mandi area, and Kasturi Devi (65), a resident of Gujlan, too, could be the heatstroke victims. The hospital authorities were unable to confirm the exact cause of death.

In other part of the state, Ambala recorded a high of 44.9 degree Celsius, up by five degrees above normal while Bhiwani and Narnaul recorded maximum at 45.6 degree Celsius and 44 degree Celsius, respectively.

In Punjab, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala settled at 45.5 degree Celsius, 45.6 degree Celsius and 45.5 degree Celsius respectively, rising by 4 notches above normal.

Chandigarh sizzled at 44.4 degree Celsius, up by five degrees above normal.
