Drug trade can’t flourish sans political backing, says Kamal
Nurmahal (Jalandhar), June 2 “The drug menace was the biggest issue in Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. Though the state government is taking all possible steps to curb the drug menace, we realised during the elections that people want the big fish in the trade behind bars,” he said. Sharma visited Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan here today. Speaking to The Tribune, he said though the government had been accusing the BSF for the drug flow from across the border, the blame game would not do any good. “Synthetic drugs do not make their way to the state from across the border. But squarely blaming the BSF isn’t the answer, nor is nabbing individual suppliers or addicts. There is immediate need to break the entire drug chain,” he asserted. The BJP president said stringent steps were the need of the hour to save Punjab from drugs. “There is now need for proper coordination between different central and state agencies to rid Punjab of this bane of drugs,” he said. Also, Sharma said the government should exempt vacant plots from property tax. He did not even rule out the possibility of the government abolishing the tax altogether. He also admitted that property tax harmed the electoral prospects of the SAD-BJP alliance. On the proposed power tariff hike, he said the government should direct the Power Corporation to check theft more efficiently, which would automatically increase revenue and, thus, saving the consumers from the annual hefty hikes.

Get every minister screened for drug links: Panel chief
Chandigarh, June 2 Referring to the seizure of 6,000 litres of illicit liquor and more than 3,000 litres of “lahan” in Ranike, the native village of Animal Husbandry Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike, by the Amritsar police on Sunday, front chairman Col GS Sandhu (retd) alleged drugs were flowing freely in the state and the seizure of illicit liquor from a minister’s village was an indication of the drug peddler-politician nexus prevailing in the state. “Merely installation of CCTV cameras in a village (Daulewala in Moga) or setting up a separate narcotics cell in the police will not be enough to solve the problem that has devastated the entire state. Curbing drug business will require harsher measures, including deployment of IPS officers in border areas. Moreover, Badal should get his every minister screened to ensure that none of them was involved in any drug-related activity,” he said. He said the SGPC or the state government should open free drug de-addiction centres in every sub-division. “Hundreds of drug addicts line up at private de-addiction centres, which fleece them and their parents by charging huge fees. Such persons are also forced to purchase medicines from particular drug shops. Private de-addiction centres should either be banned or regulated by the government in a proper way,” said Col Sandhu, who is also the Chairman of the ‘”apna Punjab” organisation. He also alleged that the posts of “sarpanches” were being “auctioned” in the state and the highest bidders were getting these on the basis of their “payment capacity”, he said. Only 20 per cent of the development grants in villages was being utilised while the remaining 80 per cent was being “gobbled up” by the politician-official nexus, he said.

30 yrs on, Capt back in Parliament tomorrow
Chandigarh, June 2 It was on June 7, 1984 - a day after the Indira Gandhi-led government launched the Operation Bluestar - he had resigned as Member of Parliament from Patiala and from the Congress. This was a new phase in his political career, which saw him getting more active in the Punjab politics. He first joined the Akali Dal, but later quit the party and rejoined the Congress. Having served the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee thrice as its president and state as Chief Minister (2002-2007), he has emerged as the strongest Punjab Congressmen. Talking to The Tribune today, Capt Amarinder Singh said this completed a cycle in his political career in which he did not compromise on his beliefs and principles. "Even though I will be in Parliament, I will be espousing the cause of Punjab. The first session will not have any debate, but I will raise all issues concerning Punjab vociferously there. Since I represent Amritsar, I will raise the issue of poor availability of clean drinking water in Amritsar, sewage flowing into water channels; rampant drug menace and lack of development in the holy city," he said. Talking about his earlier stint as Patiala MP, Capt Amarinder said although he returned to the Congress in 1998, he did not change his stand on the issue on which he had resigned from Parliament. "I had opposed the Operation Bluestar at that time and I oppose it now. It was a wrong decision", he said, adding he felt that his belief had been vindicated with his win from the Amritsar seat. |

Now, MLA Sidhu hits out at govt over old cars
Amritsar, June 2 A release issued by her office here today said Dr Navjot was on her way to Chandigarh today when her official vehicle broke down near Subhanpur. She had to make an alternative arrangement to reach her destination in view of the problem. “This is a common problem being faced by me as the Punjab Government has issued old vehicles to its ministers and chief parliamentary secretaries. This is not the first time it has happened to me. Earlier too my vehicle broke down on the Amritsar-Chandigarh road during the night hours and I had to hire a taxi to reach home”. “This has become a regular feature now. I have written many times to the Punjab Transport Minister for change of vehicle but he expressed his inability due to shortage of funds,” she said, adding that now she had even stopped taking up the issue with the state government.

Apologise to farmers ‘harassed’ for loan recovery, BKU tells state
Chandigarh, June 2 "In case, the government did not apologise, we will announce our agitation plan on June 6. All our senior leaders will meet here on that day," said Rajewal speaking to The Tribune on the phone. He said the way the farmers were humiliated and harassed by various branches of cooperative and agriculture development banks. The government would have to
face agitation by farmers for that. Hundreds of farmers across the state were served "e" notices by these banks for recovery of loan dues recently. They were told that in case of failure to return the money, their land would be sold to recover the dues. Names of defaulters and their photographs were published in newspapers. But influential defaulters, who are close to the government, were not touched, Rajewal said.
It was done amid reports of suicide by debt-ridden farmers. Talking about the power crisis, he said the BKU would set up its own control room to register complaints regarding power failures and burning of transformers etc. In case, the complaints were not attended in time, the BKU leaders would directly approach the top brass of the state government and the

Rs 18.75 relief for crop damage!
Muktsar, June 2 While some farmers refused to accept the cheques, others said the government had played a cruel joke on them. Aspal Singh, a farmer of Gurusar village, who received a cheque for Rs 18.75, said, "A five-kanal chunk of my seven-acre land has turned infertile due to water-logging. But I have got just Rs 18.75 as compensation for two years. I was not willing to accept it, but later I decided to collect it as evidence. One would feel ashamed going to the bank to deposit a cheque for such a meagre amount." The government has decided to pay a compensation of Rs 6,000 per acre, which means Rs 3,000 per crop per acre. Sukhman Singh, Bhagwan Kaur, Gudiya Rani have also got Rs 18.75 as compensation. Kulbir Singh has got Rs 35, while Gurjant Singh received Rs 37.50. Gidderbaha market committee secretary Baljinder Singh, who recently handed over the cheques to the affected farmers, said, "I was assigned the task to distribute cheques in Gurusar, Manianwala, Giljewala and Smagh villages. Some cheques were of meagre amount, but the calculations have been done by the patwari concerned and officials of the Revenue Department. I simply distributed the cheques to the genuine beneficiaries by making announcement from the village gurdwaras." "A sum of Rs 25 lakh has been distributed in the four villages. There were also cheques of bigger amounts such as Rs 31,000," he added. An official in the Revenue Department said there seemed be some clerical error as none could be awarded such a meagre compensation. Sometimes the land affected by water-logging could also be very small and that could be a reason behind the meagre compensation amount. The Deputy Commissioner had announced last year that the compensation amount of below Rs 500 should be given in cash, not in the form cheques, he added. Relief or joke *
Some farmers whose fields have been affected by water-logging in the Gidderbaha area have got cheques for Rs 18.75, Rs 35, Rs 37.50 etc. as compensation *
Last year also, some farmers were awarded Rs 3.48, Rs 6.95, Rs 20, Rs 21, Rs 25 etc. as compensation for losses due to monsoon rains

PRTC staff protest as cops ‘go soft’ on vandalism accused
Faridkot, June 2 Accusing the police of showing leniency towards the management of the two transport companies, owned by two Akali leaders of Jaitu and Gidderbaha, a delegation of PRTC employees today met SSP Sukhdev Singh Kahlon demanding strict action against the accused. The police have booked Roop Singh, Karanbir Singh and Sat Pal Singh for wrongful restraint, causing hurt and damaging property amounting to Rs 50. “The actual damage is quite high but they have been booked in minor offences. The police is succumbing to political pressure,” said Simarjit Singh, PRTC Employees’ Union state secretary. Simarjit alleged that, moreover, none of the accused had been arrested so far. The SSP denied the police had shown any leniency toward the accused. He said they would act tough on the accused. Investigation Officer Sat Pal Singh said the police were conducting raids to arrest the accused. The PRTC employees, however, alleged that it was an eyewash as after the vandalism, the police used its own vehicle to escort all the accused to their houses. Simarjit alleged that after the revolver of an accused fell during the scuffle, some police officials picked it up and handed it over to the accused. He said they would launch a statewide agitation if the guilty were not taken to task. While the police have treated it as a minor scuffle, the offence was that of vandalism to terrorise the passengers, attack government employees and damage public property, said Harjit Singh, Faridkot PRTC Employees’ Union president.
Manpreet seeks criminal case Muktsar: People's Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Singh Badal has condemned yesterday's clash that took place between PRTC employees and the supporters of an Akali transporter at Faridkot bus stand. He also sought registration of a criminal case against the owners of transport. In a statement, Manpreet said, "The transporter is a close associate of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and his wife is the president of the Jaito Municipal Council. She should immediately resign from her post." Manpreet alleged when representatives of the state government were themselves sending their goons to beat up government employees, how could the common man feel safe?

Kotkapura residents block road over poor civic amenities
Kotkapura (Faridkot), June 2 They said the sewers were blocked and were overflowing. They alleged their pleas to the
municipal authorities had failed to yield any result, forcing them to resort
to road blockade. “Due to the blockage in the sewerage for many months, it is not only overflowing but at many places, the sewage was getting mixed with the drinking water supply,” alleged Gurbir Singh Sandhu, protester. The residents lifted the dharna after Kotkapura Sub-Divisional MagistrateHarjeet Singh Sandhu, who is the administrator of the local Municipal Committee, assured them that instructions had been issued to the municipal employees to take necessary steps. The problem is so acute that during the last Assembly election, residents had slammed their doors on candidates, saying they were boycotting the elections. To shoo the politicians away, some colonies in the area had even put up banners on the entrance of their streets, stating they were boycotting the poll as there had been no development work in the last five years.

Will explore options for pure canal water supply: Union MoS
Abohar, June 2 Former lokayukta secretary PP Singh lambasted the Punjab Government for failing to take the erring industries to task even when there had been a series of protests by environmentalists in the state as well as in Rajasthan. "We have substantial reasons to believe that the ruling politicians of Punjab have lost respect for human values and lives. We can't allow the neighbouring state to play with the life of two crore people inhabiting eight districts of Rajasthan, he said. Zila Parishad chairperson Shobha Singh Doodi and vice-chairperson Shabnam Godara said their PIL filed with the National Green Tribunal had prompted the Punjab Government to take some measures against the erring industrial units but the latter were trying to get the long-awaited action deferred. He said this would not be allowed, they warned. The Jal Jan Jagriti Yatra will culminate at Sangria on June 4. Delhi trader accuses Khadi board chairman of fraud
Chandigarh, June 2 The businessman, Ashok Maggo, also a social worker, and his son Vicky Maggo alleged that Grewal and his associates defrauded them to the tune of Rs 3.5 crore on the pretext of opening an educational institute on panchayat land in Tangori village. Grewal, however, has refuted the allegations as false. He said Maggo family had “hatched a conspiracy to defame him at the behest of his political opponents”. “I don’t know why they are doing so. They have also tampered with a CD released by them. In fact, some politically important decisions were taken, so my opponents are using the complainants to harm me. I seek a CBI probe into the episode,” he said. Addressing mediapersons here today, Ashok said Grewal, his son Prateek, associates Anuj VS Kadyan, son of a Punjab minister and others had assured him that they would help him in getting 10 to 12 acres of prime village panchayat land on lease for opening an educational institute. “Grewal proposed that he would arrange the land for 35 years and this would cost him around Rs 2.5 crore. He proposed that he and his son will take 25 per cent share in the profit in our company without investing any money. After this, we gave Rs 3.5 crore to them from time to time. They also involved Kadyan in the deal who said he was close to several top BJP leaders. They also showed us the land in
Tangori. Later, we got to know that it was a disputed land with a court case pending in the court for 25 years,” alleged

HC tells Centre to take up Pan Am relief issue with US
Chandigarh, June 2 Although Libya has paid $1.5 billion to the US to compensate the victims of the hijacking, the US authorities have discriminated against Indians killed and injured in the incident. They have decided that the money would be paid only to the US citizens, the high court was told. Thirteen Indians were killed and around 120 injured in the attack. The directions, by the Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Arun Palli came on a petition filed in public interest by Chandigarh resident Aneesh Bhanot through counsel Ranjan Lakhanpal. Bhanot prayed that Indians who suffered in the attack should not be discriminated against and paid compensation on a par with American citizens. He also sought directions to the Government of India through the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Ministry of External Affairs and US airlines such as Delta, United, US Air, American Airlines and Boeing to take up the issues pertaining to the safety and security of Indian passengers on-board US airlines in case of a terror attack and not allow the US to abandon Indians like they did in case of PAN AM 73. Bhanot’s sister, Neerja Bhanot, chief purser with Pan Am Airlines and country’s first woman Ashok Chakra awardee, was gunned down when she tried to save three US children from the bullets sprayed by the terrorists after they entered the aircraft posing as Pakistani police personnel carrying arms and hand grenades. Lakhanpal said the issue of discrimination had been taken up with the US a number of times, but there had been no positive response. Even the Government of India adopted an evasive stand on the issue, he said. He also told the court that a representation was sent to the Government of India on January 6, 2014, but
the response was still awaited. The Bench asserted: “This is not a public interest litigation. At best, it can be said to be a collective action claim by persons who may have suffered due of the incident… It is for the Government of India to take up the issue keeping in mind the representation made by the petitioner dated January 6, and the material placed on record before us.”
