Amritsar, May 31
The Special Investigating Team (SIT) formed to look into the murderous attack on advocate Vaneet Mahajan earlier this month today arrested the alleged prime accused in the case, Prabhjit Rataul. A BJP councillor who is considered close to Cabinet Minister Anil Joshi, Rataul would be produced in court tomorrow where the police are likely to seek his remand for investigation.

Headed by Inspector General (counter-intelligence wing) Gaurav Yadav, the SIT was formed following directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. While Mahajan was attacked, allegedly false cases of attempt to murder were slapped on his colleague advocate Sandeep Gorsi.

The duo had dragged Joshi to court in connection with the dual vote controversy. They had alleged before the court that the attack and the “false” case were masterminded by Joshi.

The counter-intelligence wing said the SIT had arrested 10 of the 11 persons named in the case. It said a manhunt had been launched to arrest Tarsem Pardhan. It has been learnt that Rataul was arrested from Daburji in Tarn Taran following a tip-off. He had filed an anticipatory bail plea in the Sessions Court, and the hearing was slated today. But as the Judge was on leave, the hearing was deferred to June 9.

Drug racket: ED’s fresh summons to Phillaur’s son
Ruchika M. Khanna
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 31
Damanvir Singh, son of former Punjab Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur, has been issued fresh summons by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for June 13.

He would be questioned by ED officials for his alleged involvement in the synthetic drug racket. The ED is learnt to have secured most of the documents from the Income Tax Department to establish Damanvir’s “business dealings” with industrialist Chunni Lal Gaba.

The directorate has been investigating Gaba on the charges of supplying pseudoephedrine (used to make ICE) to druglord Varinder ‘Raja’, who in turn used to supply it to his partners in Canada. Gaba has a pharmaceutical industry in Baddi, for which he was getting pseudoephedrine from suppliers in south India. He, too, has been issued summons for questioning on June 9.

Damanvir and Gaba’s role in the drug racket was revealed by alleged druglord Jagdish Singh Bhola during his interrogation earlier this year. He had named Delhi-based synthetic drug supplier Varinder ‘Raja’ (now in Patiala jail) and said that Damanvir had introduced Varinder Raja to Chunni Lal Gaba. This had opened Pandora’s box, ultimately forcing the SAD-BJP government to ask Damanvir’s father Sarwan Singh Phillaur to quit. Over the past four months, the ED has issued at least three summons to both Damanvir and Gaba, but the duo have so far managed to evade their questioning.

With the ED now getting majority of documents seized by the Income Tax Department during a search operation carried on Gaba’s factories on February 18, which will establish the financial dealings between Gaba, Damanvir and Raja, the noose is finally tightening around the Phillaurs and Gaba. Initially, the IT Department was not handing over these documents to the ED. It was only after the ED approached the Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act Court that the court directed the IT authorities to hand over these documents to the ED before June 4.

Badal to meet PM to discuss state’s development plan
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, May 31
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said he would soon call on the Prime Minister and the Union ministers in New Delhi to submit a comprehensive plan for the overall development of the state.

On the second day of his Sangat Darshan programme in the Talwandi Sabo Assembly segment, Badal accused the previous UPA government of deliberately sabotaging the state government’s development plans. With the formation of the NDA government at the Centre, the development of the state would now get a major boost, he said.

“I have already asked officials to prepare a detailed plan regarding the development of the state and the problems faced by it. This will help in drawing the maximum benefit under various Central schemes. I will meet the Prime Minister and various Union ministers to apprise them about the special needs of the state, which has suffered due to step-motherly treatment by the Congress-led UPA government,” he said.

“Modi is a decisive and visionary Prime Minister and he will certainly work hard to realise the cherished dreams of every countryman. Punjab will soon become a leading state in the country in every field,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the people for electing Harsimrat Kaur Badal as the Lok Sabha member from Bathinda for the second consecutive term. Impressed by her ability and merit, he said, the Prime Minister had bestowed an honour on the state by handpicking her for his Cabinet.

Amarinder calls AAP a party of Naxalites
Says like SAD (A), this party will also fade away
Tribune News Service

Patiala, May 31
Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh today called the state Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Naxalites. He said senior leaders, including Patiala MP Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, Faridkot MP Prof Sadhu Singh and Dr Balbir Singh, who is believed to be keen on contesting the Patiala (city) bypoll on the AAP ticket, had been associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist). He said it was dangerous to let the youth fall into their trap.

“AAP managed to get the jobless youths’ support as they were frustrated with both the state and central governments. We need to take concrete steps to resolve their problems,” he said.

Citing the examples of Simranjit Singh Mann’s SAD (Amritsar) and People’s Party of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh said both the parties tapped the people’s anger to make an impact in the electoral fray. However, these parties soon faded away.

“Similar would be the fate of AAP. They have won a mere four seats in the country. We need to win back our youth and strengthen the Congress party,” said Captain. Captain Amarinder said the party needed to pull itself together to contest the Patiala bypoll. Though it was early to announce the candidate, the party needed to start campaigning, he said.

Captain Amarinder Singh did not once comment upon the SAD-BJP combine and chose to attack the party’s main rival AAP in the city. The Amritsar MP along with his wife Preneet Kaur was here to attend a function organised by the District Congress Committee.

AAP hits back, says it’s insult to 30 lakh voters

Countering Amarinder, AAP leader Prof Manjit Singh said theirs was a pro-people party, and not an outfit of leaders who had "looted the country" for decades. He alleged that by calling certain AAP leaders as Naxalites, the former CM had only insulted the over 30 lakh voters who had shown faith in AAP in the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. Seeking an apology from Amarinder, he said AAP leaders such as Dr Dharamvir Gandhi, Prof Sadhu Singh, Dr Balbir Singh and Dr Daljit Singh had served the humanity their entire life.

Moga, May 31
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal will arrive in Amritsar on June 3 for a meeting with the four newly elected Lok Sabha members from the state. He would also pay obeisance at the Golden Temple.

Party’s Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann said the AAP leadership had decided to focus on Punjab for the next Assembly elections. The only four seats that the AAP won in the recent Lok Sabha elections were in Punjab.

It managed lead in 33 of the 117 Assembly segments and stood second in 25 others. The SAD got 26 per cent votes (won four seats) while the Congress’ vote share was 33 per cent (three seats). No state convener yet, says AAP
Sarbjit Dhaliwal
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 31
The controversy surrounding the appointment of Aam Aadmi Party convener for Punjab seems to have been resolved, at least for now.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is learnt to have made it clear to all concerned in Punjab that no one had been appointed the state convener. He said senior leader Manish Sisodia would soon visit Punjab to discuss the party’s organisational structure.

The controversy started after a Jalandhar-based activist announced advocate HS Phoolka, who lost the Lok Sabha elections from Ludhiana, as the Punjab convener of the party. He had reportedly claimed that a resolution to appoint Phoolka was passed by the AAP executive in Jalandhar earlier this week, and later endorsed by Kejriwal himself.

Following the announcement, all senior leaders, including some MPs, of the party from Punjab rushed to Delhi and yesterday held a meeting with Kejriwal.

Sources said several leaders have been eying the state convener’s post.
