Twist in the trail!
Gowns have forever been associated with grandeur and when they come with long trails, the magnificence grows manifold. With many celebrities, including Aishwarya and Sonam, donning gowns with long trails at the Cannes Film Festival this year, the trend sure will find many takers in India
Besides cinema and all things important, the Cannes Film Festival is about celebrities who know all about fashion, celebrities who claim to know all about fashion and celebrities who pop up on the red carpet never-to-be-seen-again for the rest of the year! It’s also about residue of fashion left behind - what looked out-of-this-world, what failed to impress; praising Sonam Kapoor most of the times, lauding Aishwarya Rai this time, picking up trends and then reviewing them. This year, Cannes Film Festival had unending trails adding colour to the red carpet. Trails have been an attachment of the gowns forever but when Indian faces take to it, we know there is a trend waiting to be adopted at Bollywood award functions.
Copy, don’t paste
So, it started with Sonam Kapoor’s outing in an Elie Saab couture number. The voluminous gown looked pretty on her lanky frame, the end of its trail eight steps behind her! Other who sported trails were Naomi Watts, Cheryl Cole, Freida Pinto, Blake Lively, Hillary Swank, Uma Thurman and more importantly Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, whose Roberto Cavalli gowns made fashion critics get up and take notice. “Gowns with trails are a style statement in the repeat mode. You see these each year at Cannes, Oscars and other film festivals in different versions,” says Niket Mishra of Niket and Jainee fashion designer duo. The length may vary and so might the silhouette, from pleated to straight but trails will always follow gowns on the red carpet. Even when Sonam Kapoor changed into lilac chiffon Elie Saab gown, a generous trail followed her. “The Anamika Khanna saree was an interesting take on trails. It had a slightly longer pallu, which was an Indian equivalent of a gown tail. It suggests that there can be Indian interpretations of the western trend.”
Will it, won’t it
Not that Bollywood actresses haven’t worn gowns at the red carpet events in India, but they weren’t as experimental. Would Sonam Kapoor ever don the Elie Saab-like gown at the Filmfare Awards? Amit Kashyap, a fashion designer from Delhi, is pretty hopeful, “Deepika Padukone wore a very unconventional gown by Gaurav Gupta at Filmfare Awards and I am sure young actresses of Bollywood won’t shy away from trying out-of-the-box silhouettes.” After peplum, fashion designers, taking a cue from Cannes, forecast that trails will be the next big couture trend in India. Nandita, of Hemant and Nandita fame, is confident of seeing Deepika Padukone in a gown that boasts of a trail. “A trail definitely makes the costume look grand,” she agrees, adding that Indian actresses might not have worn gowns with trails till now, but the trend will be soon followed.
Grand appeal
It’s after many years that style statements made by Indian actresses at Cannes received applause from around the world. “It means what they wore has been appreciated and can get translated into a trend back home,” feels Nivedita Saboo. With fashion forecasts getting global, the fraternity in India is keeping a tab on trends coming in and going out of fashion. “We might see a long trail attached to a lehanga as well,” suggests Nivedita, who can’t wait to watch the red carpet events of next year. Sun(ny) and the desert
Sunny Leone makes a foray into Punjabi music industry with a video Saree Wali Girl. The team is all-excited, even as the lady sizzles in a red saree
In the vast landscape of a desert, a sultry beauty, draped in a red sari, is heating up the temperature. As she swings and turns around, you know she has taken your breath away. The girl in the red saree is the baby doll of the industry, Sunny Leone, and this is her first Punjabi video shot in Dubai. And before you pounce on your laptop, here's giving you more dope on the how and when of this sizzling chapter! A song sung by Punjabi singer Girik Aman Saree Wali Girl, shot by Virsa Arts, features Sunny Leone, making it the first Punjabi video that stars a Bollywood actor. The video releases in June and the team is all excited. Red hot
Yo Yo Honey brought out a bottle of Vodka and partied till late in the night with Sunny Leone in his song Chaar Bottle Vodka. After the heady party, the beauty slips into a red saree swinging in the desert on Girik Aman's song, which has an international feel to it. Sunny, who is currently shooting in Rajasthan for MTV Splitsvilla, is excited about the groovy track. "This is my first ever full-on Punjabi song in a sari and its called Sari wali girl. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing the song. Girik Aman is a great singer and you guys are going to absolutely love the video as it has been shot in Dubai, it's hot, it's beautiful and it's glamorous," says Sunny, all-praise for the standard of Punjabi music videos, which are also shining like the films. Hit it
And guess who is getting maximum mileage from the sultry beauty moving around in the desert…singer Girik Aman. "Undoubtedly," he makes no efforts to hide his excitement. After the success of his song Take Your Sandals Off this would be Girik's much-awaited track. "I wrote this song especially for Sunny Leone and she liked the track when I sang it out to her. And who better to feature in this song than her." Girik shot with Sunny for almost a day-and-a-half in Dubai. "I was surprised to see that she has no starry tantrums; she would be on time for shoot and I must say, she looks splendid," says Girik, who added this prefix to his name Aman only recently. "Girik means Lord Shiva; this numerological change is altering my life now." Right shot
Navjit Buttar, one of the members of Virsa Arts, who shot the video of the song, jokes about returning from Dubai without a single snapshot with Sunny Leone. "Our friends can't believe we didn't get a picture," he laughs, also explaining the reason for the miss. "We shot with Sunny and she is extremely professional. We didn't have to tell her much; she managed to play the muse nicely without any problem," shares Navjit, who calls this as the first overseas video for Virsa Arts. The team comprising Arvinder Khera, Varinderpal Bains, Enn Syan and Navjit Buttar, of course, are already giving Punjabi videos a new look. "We wanted to bring in something different, so we shot the song in Dubai with Sunny looking stunning in the red saree." jasmine@tribunemail.com

No loss, all gain
Jasmine Singh
An attitude that is carefree, an outlook that allows anything and everything to come and go, an approach that hints of professionalism hidden behind the newness of the world, the young singer on the block Gitaz Bindrakhia would rather struggle to create a place than nicely slip into a place already created by his father, late Surjit Bindrakhia! After the debacle of his first Punjabi album Just U & Me, which only made Gitaz list things he shouldn't be doing in the near future, he is getting good inputs for his track Nuksaan, which has been sung and written by him. He likes to be the way he is and will only let time add finesse to him rather than borrow a fake attitude. Here's getting up, close and personal with Gitaz. To begin with
Nuksaan is the first track that I have written; I have had a great time singing it and then translating it into a video. I look at myself and I see that I am growing with time. Every new song brings in something new. I can't see myself walking on the path created by others, I will create mine. If not a singer…
Well, this one is difficult to guess. I was born to be a singer. I think had I not been a singer, I would have been a sportsperson. Singer actor…
I am a singer first. I did a film out of nowhere. There is a long way to go still. I want to establish myself as a versatile singer before I jump into anything else. The live power
I remember my father talking about the energy that he gets when he performs at live shows; I could never understand it then. Now, I know what he meant. Recently, I performed live at a place; the energy, the cheering was infectious. I can still hear the hooting in my mind! Jamm in
I would love to sing with Gurdas Maan, he is a legend and singing with him would be a dream come true. I look up to
My father; even when
he is not around, I draw my inspiration from him. He is the man who has influenced my life;
I take him along in every step of my life. Practice perfect
I understand the importance of riyaaz, so whatever time I get - while travelling in a car, sitting with my family and friends - I try to sing different songs and ask their opinion on all. My style
I don't copy style; I think I look cool in whatever I am comfortable in. No garish clothes, no bling, no tattoos; I am good with my casual style of dressing. Music on my i-Pod
I have all my father's tracks on my i-Pod. I am his biggest fan ever. Five minutes before the show
I remember my father, his energy and I pray to god. Left on an island…
I would take two things with me - music and memories.

Let the child be
Simmi Waraich My son was wrongly picked up in school even when he was not at fault. It was his friend who was being naughty, but the teacher punished both of them. Should I talk to the teacher as my son is very upset? Madhu Sood, Chandigarh. If the teacher is regularly troubling children by punishing them, then maybe you can consider talking to her or him separately. However, often it is a misunderstanding and it is important for children to understand that life is often unfair and it is okay. Let children deal with minor problems, as overprotecting them does not help because they do not learn how to handle frustrations. Listen to the child and empathise, but teach him how to relax. This will help him express better. The ability to express feelings is also an important factor in a child's emotional development. Research on emotional intelligence (see How to Raise a Child with a High EQ, by Quill, 1998) correlates this ability with both social and academic success. I am 29 years old and married. However, I feel that this man who used to visit us as a family friend is interested in me and I am also in love with him. I have tried to speak to him, but he does not take my calls now and told me he does not love me. Although I am sure he does and is hiding his true feelings. My parents are upset and tell me that I am wrong, but I cannot get him out of my head. Rajesh Dogra, Panchkula. Females are more likely to develop obsessive love toward people they know rather than towards a stranger. The objects of love are often people who have been of some help in their lives. You must get over the illusion that you are incomplete without this other person. Yes, it's good to be loved but remember that you were complete even without this person in your life. Find something that you used to love doing and start following it up. If you don't enjoy things that you did before, think about why that should happen. You need to slowly explore new things. Discover what all you can do. Do things that you enjoyed doing earlier. Join a sports club or any place where you can follow your hobby or sports. Be your best friend. Look around you. There are so many people who feel alone and neglected. Help them out. Visit an orphanage or an old age home. Genuinely help people out with whatever you are good at. Par Excellence
The biggest challenge in improving the level of your golf is to motivate yourself to try and improve. As a golfer's game begins to decline, they blame it on lack of practice or on age and begin to ask for strokes from their playing partners. They also buy new clubs hoping that this would solve the problem. There is also a notion that once we meddle or change our swing we would forget even what we know! There may be a little transition time between swings but if one makes the correct analysis and sets about the changes in a planned, systematic and phased manner, there would be reasonable progress.
The best way to start would be to create a correct diagnosis. The trained eye is that of a teaching professional, but if you are not willing go to one start with the analysis of your impact, the shape of the divot and then the ball flight. Within the ball flight would be the starting direction, the curvature, height or trajectory, distance and repeatability. There are many principles that affect the above mentioned factors of the ball flight. If your impact is inconsistent it could be from a poor grip and inconsistent grip pressure, an unstable body or an incorrect angle of approach. When the divot points left of the alignment of your feet (for right-handed golfers), it would be from an over-the-top, out-to-in path or a flipping action of the hands. If the divot points to the right, the swing is from in-to-out and shallow or a very late release. Out-to-in swings also have a deep divot while in-to-out swings have very little divot. Many mistakes within the swing are reactions to some other fault. If a golfer has a weak grip they would either have to flip their hands to square the club or make an out-to-in swing to get the ball to start left. The opposite is true for a strong grip. The swing would be from in-to-out to make the ball start to the right. Within all the bad shots you hit during the round try to find a pattern and fix the most commonly repeated fault. Do not just start from the problem but try to figure out what is causing it. There could be a chain of reactions and you would have to start from the beginning or the original fault. Ode to womanhood
Kathak dancer Purva’s ballet, Changing Face of Durga, fuses different dance styles, including kathak and taandav, to highlight the plight of women Kathak dancer Purva aimed at doing a ballet on women empowerment. When she set out to research, everywhere she found women still chained. The influences she gathered led her to a ballet called Changing Face of Durga, journey of a woman. Presented by Shobhaniya Kala Kendra, this 61-member ballet touches upon sensitive subjects, right from female infanticide, dowry deaths to marital rapes. "I started with a different intent, but what I saw I just couldn't ignore. Yes, women are moving out but still very much in the limit set out for them by the patriarchal society. The situation has in fact gone worse. How can we blame a rape victim for wearing short clothes or venturing out? Holding a woman responsible for a man's sick psyche is not a sign of a progressive society." The ballet that fuses different dance styles, including kathak and taandav, is prepared by students of Shobhaniya Kala Kendra that has been founded by Purva. A trained kathak dancer, Purva looks up to her mother and Guru Shobha Koser. "I have only learnt under her and really wonder how people can go on changing Gurus." In fact, Purva has even named her school in Ludhiana after her guru-mother. "Classical dances enjoyed little patronage in Ludhiana just like other cities of Punjab." In fact, she got requests of teaching dance for DJ songs, to begin with! Frustrated at not being able to garner attention for kathak, she started teaching 30 minutes of pure classical dance with every class. By and by the interest of learners picked up. "Things have really changed in the last two decades. You will be surprised to see students' dedication now," says Purva, who has 100 plus students with her now. This kathak dancer misses her late father Madan Lal Koser. "My father would have brilliant ideas whenever we attempted something like Changing Face of Durga. We miss him," says Purva, who enacts Durga and is happy to bring her ballet for Pracheen Kala Kendra's 200th Monthly Baithak Programme. (This one hour ten minutes dance drama would be staged on May 30
at the Tagore Theatre from 7 pm onwards). mona@tribunemail.com |

Ground zero
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra moves on to his next film Mirza Sahibaan After winning accolades for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra knows it's time to move on to another difficult film Mirza Sahibaan. He says the movie, a tragic love story, isn't a typical Bollywood film about a boy and girl. In an interview, Mehra spoke about the new movie, his experience with the newcomers Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher that the film will launch, and about working with the inimitable writer Gulzar. Mirza Sahibaan is your first foray into unalloyed love. What does love mean to you? Love is quite illogical. We try to find reason for it. And fail. Love doesn't mean trying to figure out all the equations formulas and theorems of love. As for what love means to me, I will discover that as I direct the film. I know it would be one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. My film is not a boy-girl thing. It's about soul mates. I won't try to figure it out. I'll just experience it. Unlike other classic love stories, Mirza Sahibaan has not been done too often on screen? It's very interesting that you point this out. When I embarked on this journey, I wasn't the least concerned about how many times the story had been done. This was just something I needed to do. It's a tragic love story. But the way it plays out is so unique. See, usually classic love stories are based on the premise of societal opposition. In Mirza Sahibaan, the dynamics and complexities of the love relationship are defined by the couple itself. That's what made this love story so contemporary for me. In today's world, love is not a taboo. It's something parents and society accept. There is unconditional surrender in this relationship, a kind of sufiyana touch that fascinated me. How have you contemporized the love story? It's set in modern times, 2015 India. The legend of Mirza Sahibaan echoes across the centuries. That's how it plays out. Once I was certain of the time zone, I decided on where I wanted the legend to be located. We decided on Rajasthan. The Rajasthan that I want to explore is the very modern tourist hub. Your Mirza and Sahibaan are played by two newcomers. Yes, Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher are my Mirza and Sahibaan. They play two youngsters brought up and educated in England, now back in India. They play the gen-now. In the legend at a turning point in the story, Sahibaan breaks the arrows and that matters to Mirza the most. We'll explore the legend through these very talented newcomers. It would be a new challenge for me to direct newcomers. They don't have to compete with other youngsters. They've to compete with themselves. Both my leads are living out their characters. Their journey has started at Point 0, the same point where I start every film. This is what I learnt from Amitabh Bachchan and AR Rahman. With each project, they're starting again. — IANS
Why Akshay loves Goa...
Actor-producer Akshay Kumar's profession takes him to exotic places in and out of the country, but when it comes to holidaying, the action star prefers to relax and unwind in Goa, a holiday destination that welcomed a record 3.12 million tourists in 2013. The next 12 months are going to be busy for the action star as movies like Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty, It's Entertainment, Gabbar and Baby, are all lined up for release. But he says he ensures that he gets his break. "I take a break after every three months for seven days," Akshay said. When asked where he likes to go on a holiday, he said: "I like to go to Goa. I love it. It's very chilled out. Everyone knows me there and they just say hi, but nobody bothers me as such. It's the only place in the country where I can roam around and enjoy myself." The father-of-two, who is married to former actress Twinkle Khanna, often hits the state, which is mostly popular for beaches, with his family. "I bought a house there. It's a Portuguese house. I enjoy there with my family. I get to eat different kinds of cuisines. There are different types of chefs from all over the world and you can invite them home," he said. If getting home-cooked food by chefs from various parts of the globe is one way he gets to relish the lip-smacking dishes, the restaurants are equally enticing to him. "There are small restaurants too. The owners are from Germany, Russia, Toronto and other countries," said the 46-year-old. He enjoys eating there so much that he even suggested actress Sonakshi Sinha, who has worked with him in movies like Holiday..., Rowdy Rathore and Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara!, to try out one of the eating joints during her stay there. "I even sent her once. I suggested to her to go to a Greek restaurant. I told her that if you like the food, break the plate. It's a tradition. She was shocked to hear that first, but she did it. It's so much fun," said Akshay, who is also into production and his next project is Fugly. The actor, known for being punctual on sets, likes the fact that when he is on and off relaxing in Goa, there is no time constraint and he is not bothered by the outside world at all. "Everything is so easy and you can get up late in the morning. My house is located in such a place that there is a network problem, so phones don't work," he said. "The beaches are also clean. I can go and take a dip in the sea and see the sunset," he added. Akshay is once again looking forward to holiday in Goa. "I will go to Goa this year too," he said, who can go on and on about the state and not get tired talking about it.

Key to success The Fugly boy Arfi Lamba is on cloud nine these days, reason being he is offered an international film with Akon and Lady Gaga. The name of the film is The Key Project and it is directed by Will'o (Pantheras Films). Will'O has been in the business for over 14 years and has seen and experienced all aspects of film production. His last project was the feature film The Million Dollar Date starring Tom Sizemore. Arfi will be the only Indian in the film. Clarifies Arfi, "Yes, I have been offered The Key Project though right now it's too early to reveal any further details. I am really excited about the project. I am really excited to work with Akon and Lady Gaga. Lady gaga is doing a small but very important role in the film." The Key Project is a film about true/real experiences that successful people have gone through to get to where they are today. Will 'O stated, "Success means a lot of different things, from health, finances and many others... we want to capture the different stories from celebrities to teachers, to show the power of never giving
up". Helping hand
Actor Ashton Kutcher came to the aid of a group of hikers and jumpstarted their car after its battery died in the Hollywood Hill. The driver told a publication that the car's battery died while they were hiking, so they pushed it to a nearby street and began flagging down other cars in a bid to get someone to help them jumpstart their vehicle. The group was stunned when the 36-year-old actor spotted them and pulled over, offering to help. Kutcher told them that he had to drop his passenger, believed to have been Black Swan star and his fiancée Mila Kunis at home first, but quickly returned to the scene to assist them. The source said that the heartthrob initially struggled to find his own battery, because it was located in the back of his Lexus, but eventually helped them get back on the road. A member of the group
captured a video of the road-side rescue, during which Kutcher can be heard laughing and says: "I've never f****ing not been able to find a battery in a car."
— IANS Sajid, Tiger happy with response to Heropanti
Sajid Nadiadwala, the producer of the recently released Heropanti which marked the acting debut of Jackie Shroff's son Tiger, is happy with the response that the film has garnered in the country and abroad. "As a maker, we always feel we can do better, but the last two to three days (before a film's release) are such that we lose perspective and we don't know what will be the collection," Sajid said at the success party of the film. "But we are very happy that the film has not only been accepted here in the country, but overseas also," he added. Tiger, who has impressed the audience with his jaw-dropping stunts in the film and dancing skills as well, is also happy with the response and thanks the audience. "It is good news, especially for newcomers like us, after all we were working so hard for this only. I'm feeling very happy and I'm very thankful," Tiger said. Released this Friday, Heropanti got a massive start at the box office and it made over Rs 13.05 crore within two days of hitting the screens. Directed by Sabbir Khan, the film also launched newcomer Kriti Sanon.

Out or not out?
Nowadays, television shows have a short life span. Amidst rumours and speculation about many shows going off air, we look at some of the shows that are likely to wrap up. While we have confirmation for some, there is no official announcement for the others.
Drab and dragged Six years ago, this show was one of the top rated ones. It continued to reign supreme for a long while but since last year, there has not been much to talk about in terms of ratings. Few months ago, there were reports that it will wrap up soon but there has not been any end to the show in sight, which seems to be dragging. Perhaps the channel is waiting for a good replacement to wrap this one up.
Not so funny This comedy show on Sab TV had a good run initially, but it was unable to keep up with the masses. Also when the lead actress, Giaa Manek quit the show its ramifications were apparent. Now, after one and half years, it will pack up forever.
Tricks and trials It launched with great pomp and show in February 2013, but soon, producer, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, apparently, broke all association with the show due to some disagreement with the channel. The show did not deliver the desired ratings, but when the plot was diverted from the original book, ratings picked up. The show has been under the scanner and it might end in June, but there has been no official word yet.
Too many changes It faced controversy when it started as people assumed it was based on the life of a famous actress. Later, the show did not get expected ratings, so the whole plot was changed to a love-hate relationship between the lead couple. Soon, the show was a hit and in its one-year run, the show has enjoyed good ratings. However, of late, with lead actors and story changing, it hasn't had a good run and might end soon.
Lesson in acting
TV actor, Kunal Thakkur, who was seen in several shows, including Bandini and Koi Aane Ko Hain, got to work with Irrfan Khan in the film, The Xpose. Alternately, Kunal, who is also a tennis coach, says, "The first time I met Irrafan bhai, I was assisting Vishal Bhardwaj on the sets of his film, Maqbool. Irrfan bhai is an institution in himself. He would always offer me some acting tips. So while he inspires me to be a better actor, I inspire him to be a better tennis player. His inputs have been extremely helpful to play this character in Xpose." He hopes to do better in the coming times.
An end to a journey
After working in Balika Vadhu for over five years, Anup Soni now has quit the show. He talks about leaving the show and about things that he will miss the most. How does it feel like to quit Balika Vadhu? I am very upset about leaving the show, but I think as an actor one has to move on. I am really going to miss the show though. Was it a tough decision for you to quit
the show? It was not difficult to decide as I had already spoken to the makers about it, a year and a half ago. My presence on the show added to it, but if you are not an active part of the story, you don't feel satisfied as an actor. I don't want the product to suffer, so I gave them ample time to figure out my exit. A show is always bigger than the actors in it. Are there any memories that you will cherish from the show? The team, co-actors, production, company, directors and the unit - this show was one of the best experiences of my life. The scenes with Anandi and Suguna were memorable. In fact, I enjoyed being on the show for first three years the most. What will you miss the most about the show? I will miss the one and half hour long drive from home to work, which I would utilise to see movies and read books. I will miss that time the most. What's next? I haven't decided anything yet. I will continue with hosting Crime Patrol. If any interesting offer comes up, I will take it up.
