Fierce attack on mentally challenged inmate at RIMH
6 days on, 41-yr-old battles for life

Six days after being badly assaulted by a fellow inmate at the Regional Institute for Mentally Handicapped (RIMH), Sector 31, sustaining grievous injuries on his private parts, a 41-year-old mentally challenged man (name withheld) is battling for survival.

BJP leaders battle to take credit for Kirron’s win

The top three leaders — city unit president Sanjay Tandon, former MP Satya Pal Jain and former Union Minister and former MP Harmohan Dhawan — are now trying to take the credit for Kirron Kher’s victory.

Cop falls off bus, dies

A 49-year-old sub-inspector with the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Shyam Lal, died after he fell on the road while boarding a Haryana Roadways bus near the Fun Republic light point yesterday.

Power supply system crippling in City Beautiful

Poor power supply infrastructure, no advance power purchase agreements, delayed upgrade of substations and failure of the enforcement wing of the UT Electricity Department have crippled the power supply system in the city.

Changes in local Cong unit on the cards
Chandigarh, May 18
After the defeat of Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, changes in the local party unit are now on the cards. Senior party leaders are admitting that there many reasons of Bansal's defeat. One of the reasons was weak leadership in the local party unit, which ultimately led to Bansal's defeat, a leader said.

AAP performed better than Congress in 23 sectors
Chandigarh, May 18
Although, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Gulkirat Kaur Panag, stood third by bagging 1,08,362 votes, she performed better than the Congress candidate and four -time Member of Parliament (MP), Pawan Kumar Bansal, in not less than 23 different sectors of Chandigarh. The voters in VIP sectors -1 to 10 and Kaimbwala, Sector 16 to 23 and Sectors 37 to 41- preferred to choose AAP over the Congress.

Residents of Sectors 6 and 7 in Panchkula which houses bureaucrats, police officers and senior government officials voted for the BJP, as a majority of them gave their votes to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Rattan Lal Kataria.

Once again, Modi proved lucky for local BJP
Supporters celebrate Kirron Kher’s victory at the BJP office in Sector 33, Chandigarh, on Friday. BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi once again proved lucky for the BJP in winning the Chandigarh seat. Last time, the BJP had won the Chandigarh seat in 1996 and 1998 respectively and at that time Modi was the in charge of the Chandigarh BJP unit. Now once again in 2014, the BJP won the Chandigarh seat when Modi was the prime ministerial candidate.

Swanky swings, not smooth roads, on Panchkula civic body’s priority list
Panchkula, May 18
A spiral slide purchased at an exorbitant cost installed in the MDC, Sector 5, Panchkula. Swanky swings are more important for Panchkula residents rather than smooth roads. Officials of the Municipal Corporation (MC) here apparently believe so, which is why they purchased small swings, each costing Rs 81,000 rather than re-carpeting potholed roads.

PU Syndicate approves fee hike
Chandigarh, May 18
The Panjab University Syndicate today approved fee hike of up to 20 per cent in all 188 undergraduate and postgraduate colleges affiliated to it. Also, a 5 per cent fee hike was approved for PU teaching departments and regional centres during the meeting.

Relief for Dhanwantry students
Chandigarh, May 18
In a major relief to about 200 students of Shri Dhanwantry Ayurvedic College, Sector 46, here, the Panjab University Syndicate today decided that the PU will conduct their examination, reviewing its earlier decision on disaffiliating the college.

Girls outshine boys in tricity
Chandigarh, May 18
Girls outshone boys in the tricity in the Indian School Certificate (ISC) Class XII examination conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), the results of which were declared on late Saturday evening. Out of the 10 students, who scored more than 90 per cent marks, six were girls.

7,500 take examination amid tight security

About 7,500 candidates from across the country appeared for the PGIMER’s MD/MS entrance examination amid high security here today. The students underwent multi-layered security checks before reaching the examination halls at each of the 12 exam centres. Even envelopes of admit cards were not allowed in view of the previous instance of cheating during the examination using sophisticated devices that surfaced two years ago.

English oratory contest
Chandigarh: St Xavier Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-C, organised an inter-school English oratory competition, “The Orator”, on its campus. The school authorities said the competition was held with a view to providing a platform to the budding speakers and sharpening their public speaking skills. Around 14 teams from the Tricity schools took part in this mega event.

A Sector17-based jeweller was duped of a diamond ring after an unidentified woman stole it by replacing it with a duplicate ring.

Thief jumps off first floor of house to escape arrest, injured
Panchkula, May 18
High drama prevailed when a thief jumped from the first floor of a house to save himself from being caught in Karan colony in Barwala. However, in the dramatic 30-foot fall, the youth suffered injuries on both his heels and landed in the police net.
