12 hurt as two families clash

Dera Bassi, May 18
Twelve members of two families of Pandwala village were injured, including an ex-serviceman, in a group clash over a leaking septic tank near here this morning.

The trouble started when wives of ex-serviceman Mukesh Kumar and village lambardar Ramesh Kumar had a heated argument over a septic tank owned by the lambardar. Hearing the women arguing, members of both the families came out and indulged in a scuffle. Following which they used sticks and iron rods, eyewitnesses revealed.

Members of both the families sustained injuries and were admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

Dinesh Kumar, brother of Mukesh Kumar, claimed that following arguments among the women, Ramesh and his two sons came out with sticks and iron rods and attacked Dinesh and his wife leaving them seriously injured.

On the other hand, Ramesh in a complaint to the police alleged that Mukesh, Dinesh and woman members of their families attacked him and his wife while they were cleaning the courtyards of their house this morning.

SHO Atul Soni said investigation in this regard had been started after receiving complaints from both the parties.

Four assaulted

In another case, four security guards of an industrial unit allegedly assaulted four persons, identified as Rajeev, Mohit, Anil and one other resident of Mubarikpur, while they were trudging across the Industrial focal point, near Mubarikpur, late last night. They have been admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

Wheel thefts on the rise in city

Thieves stealing wheels of cars are on the prowl in the city. A day after thieves stole two wheels of a Swift car in Sector 21, three more incidents of wheels being stolen have been reported.

Thieves managed to steal all four wheels of an I-20 car parked near Modern Housing Complex in Mani Majra. Another incident was reported near the Mani Majra market where thieves stole two wheels of a Zen car. Interestingly, both the spots are close to the police beat box.

The third incident has been reported from Sector 20 where thieves stole all four tyres of a Swift car parked outside the house. In the last few months, the Chandigarh Police have been flooded with complaints regarding wheel thefts.

Sector 17 jeweller duped

Chandigarh, May 18
A Sector17-based jeweller was duped of a diamond ring after an unidentified woman stole it by replacing it with a duplicate ring.

Dilsher Singh, SHO of the Sector 17 police station, said that the woman visited Shiva Jewellers in Sector 17 posing as a customer. "The accused woman began looking for diamond rings kept in the showcase", SHO stated.

A police official said while trying different ring,s the woman replaced one of the rings with a duplicate one.

"It was later the staff of the store realised that one of the diamond rings had been replaced with a duplicate one", the police stated.

Police sources stated the police of neighboring states would also be contacted to get a clue of the accused. Similar incidents had been reported in the past.

Meanwhile, a case at the Sector 17 police station has been registered and the investigations have started.

Thief jumps off first floor of house to escape arrest, injured

High drama prevailed when a thief jumped from the first floor of a house to save himself from being caught in Karan colony in Barwala. However, in the dramatic 30-foot fall, the youth suffered injuries on both his heels and landed in the police net.

The accused, identified as Vishal, 23, was committing theft on the first floor of a house when he heard footsteps near stairs and apprehended that the owner had come. To escape, he jumped from the floor.

Earlier, the police had got a tip-off that the accused, who was wanted in three thefts, including that in the house of a Haryana cop, was in Barwala. Coincidentally, the owner and a team of cops reached the house when Vishal was committing the crime.

“First, he committed a theft on the ground floor of the house of one Surinder. After stealing cash and valuables from there, he struck at the house on the first floor,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jagtar Singh. He added, “We had just reached the spot when Vishal heard that someone was coming from the stairs.” Thinking that he would escape from the balcony, Vishal jumped but ended up injuring his heels.

During interrogations, Vishal confessed to have committed theft at the house of a Sub-inspector with the Haryana police in Barwala. Two SIM cards have been recovered by him.

State Sub-Junior and Challenger Sprints rowing Championship

Sukhdev Singh and Piyush Sharma won the gold medal in double sculls sub-junior boys category of the Chandigarh State Sub-junior and Challenger Sprints Rowing Championship held at Sukhna lake here today. Muskan Sharma and Sehaj Kaur won the top position in the girls category of the event. Four events — single sculls (boys/men and women), double sculls (men and women), coxless pairs (boys/men) and coxless fours (challenger men) — were held during the tournament.

Challenger sprints (men)

Single sculls: Harish Singh 1; Dishant Sehgal 2; and Balwinder Singh 3. Double sculls: L Dinamany and Rajinder Sharma 1; Gulshan and Dishant Sehgal 2; Balwinder Singh and Harish Singh 3. Cricket: Kudos Chemie defeat Ranbaxy Labs in T-20 final

Kudos Chemie defeated Ranbaxy Labs during the final match played for the Tynor Trophy during the 6th pharma cup T-20 cricket tournament being organised by AG Sports World Pvt Ltd, Chandigarh.

In the day and night match held at the Sector 16 cricket stadium, Kudos won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 148 runs in 20 overs. In reply, Ranbaxy managed to score 138 runs in the scheduled 20 overs at the loss of eight wickets.

Rajbir of Kudos Chemie was declared the player of the tournament; Ram Kumar of Kudos was awarded the best bowler award; Sumeet of Ranbaxy was declared the best batsman while Nikhil of Ranbaxy won the man of the match award for the final encounter.

Speed skating carnival concludes

The third Manav Mangal Open Speed Skating Carnival concluded today. Around 300 skaters from the tricity participated in the two-day event.

A former national hockey player, Rajesh Vaidya, awarded prizes to the winners of various events.

Junior State Basketball Championship
Deepak, Subheg shine in SD School’s win

In the final league match of the Junior State Basketball Championship, SD Public School-32 defeated New Public School-18 (53-50) in the boys category.

Deepak and Subheg were the main scorers for the winning team. While New Public School-18 bagged the second spot while St Xavier’s School-44 settled for the third position.

In the girls category, GNPS lifted the title by beating St Anne’s School 57-14. Amrinder and Akshita shone for GNPS in the one-sided match.

St Anne’s School-32 and Sacred Heart-26 bagged the second and third places, respectively.

Wrestling trials tomorrow

The Chandigarh Wrestling Association (CWA) would conduct selection trials on May 20 at 3.30 pm at Wrestling Coaching Centre in Sector 30 here.

CWA general secretary Darshan Lal Sharma said the selected wrestlers would represent Chandigarh in the 33rd boys freestyle and Greco-Roman style and 16th female junior wrestling championship to be held at Jhumri Telaiya in Kodrama district of Jharkhand from May 28 to 31.

Vikrant Dahiya moved to the final qualifying round by defeating Aditya Sharma 8-4 during the CLTA-AITA Men's and Women's Rs one lakh tennis tournament being held at CLTA courts here. In another match, Aditya Deshwal upset top seed Deepinder Bains 8-5 to reach the final qualifying round. 

In the women's category, Baljinder Kaur, Seerat Pannu, Nandini Sharma, Ananya Mahapatra, Bhavya Wadhawan and Pooja Maurya qualified for the main draw.
