Elderly couple get 7-year jail

Local court today awarded seven-year sentence to an elderly couple for provoking their daughter-in-law to commit suicide.

The court of Mohali additional district and sessions judge sent Kanta Devi and her husband Ram Singh to jail for a seven-year term for provoking their daughter-in-law Manpreet Kaur to commit suicide two years ago.

The police had registered a case under Section 304-B of the IPC against Kanta Devi, Ram Singh and Sukhjit Singh, husband of the victim, all residents of Dappar village (Lalru) on the complaint of Manpreet Kaur’s father Gurmit Singh after she had taken the extreme step by consuming some poisonous substance on September 29, 2012. — TNS

Two students booked for fraud

Police have booked two female B Sc-II students of DAV College-10 for submitting fake detailed mark-sheets in the college.

Accused Harpreet Kaur and Himani, and their kin have been informed about the case against them. Police said they had filed re-evaluation form for a subject and subsequently submitted fake mark sheets in the college. The fake mark sheets were noticed by college chairman Dinesh Talwar who lodged an FIR at Sector 3 police station.

DAV-10 honours sportspersons

For honouring sportsperson, who excelled at international and national level during the session 2013-14, the management of DAV College-10 organised a function, at auditorium hall of college, here today. Cash prizes of Rs11,37,000 were disbursed among the 160 outstanding sports persons by HR Gandhar, adviser to the President, DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi. Besides individual achievements, sportspersons of DAV College won a total of nine championships, finished runners-up in nine events, attained third places in two events and claimed fourth place in five disciplines. In women section, team of college has won two Championships, finished thrice at runners-up spot and attained fourth position in one event.

Sportspersons awarded for individual achievements

Gurpreet Singh represented India in the Junior World Wrestling Championship held at Sophia, Bulgaria from 13th to 18th August, 2013; Anjum Moudgil, represented India in the Asian Shooting Championship held at Iran. She also won Masters competition in AIR Rifle; Mandeep Sandhu and Vinita Bhardwaj represented Indian Universities in the World University held in Russia; Dinesh Rana represented India in Asian Junior Men Softball Championship; Hardeep Singh Dhull represented India in the U20 World Rink Hockey Championship held at Columbia; Parminder Kumar won Gold Medal in Javelin throw event in South Asian Junior Athletics Championships. Recently, he has been selected to represent India for the Asian Junior Athletics Championships;

Ranwant Singh represented India in Hong Kong Premier League Tournament; Gagandeep Singh represented India in Hockey India League (2013-14); Husandeep Singh won 3 Silver medals in South Asian Junior Athletics Championships. He also won Gold medal in the 29th National Junior Athletics Championship held in Bangalore as well as Bronze Medal in All India Athletics Championship; Karan Brar won Gold Medal in the All Inter Varsity Swimming Championship; Deepak Pandey, Sanjay K.C, Bhupinder Singh, Vikas Sharma and Suraj Singh won Gold Medal in the All Inter Varsity Baseball Championship; Ashish, Des Raj, Gurkanwal Singh, Gurmej Singh, Manjeet Singh, Sunil Kumar and Amritpal Kaur won Gold medal in All India Inter Varsity Rowing Championship; Gurjashan Singh won Silver Medal in the All Inter Varsity Basketball Championship; Tarun Thakur and Amandeep Singh won Silver Medal in All India Inter Varsity Handball Championship; Rupinder Singh, Kanwaldeep Singh, Ajay Kaith and Sumit Sharma won Silver Medal in the Inter-Varsity Badminton Championship; Prashant Malik and Gagandeep Singh won Bronze Medal in All India Inter Varsity Athletics Championship; Arpan Vadhera and Jansher Singh won Bronze Medal in All India Inter Varsity Squash Championship; Jai Parkash secured Third Position in Senior National Baseball Championship; Priyanka Rawat won Silver Medal in Women festival in Tennis.
