First-time voters honoured
Dera Bassi, May 4 All the voters belonged to Ward No. 3 of the local Municipal Council. The administration lauded their contribution in raising the poll percentage from 65 per cent (in Assembly election), to 72.6 per cent (in Lok Sabha election), in Dera Bassi. SDM Sanjiv Kumar honoured the voters, including 26 boys and 22 girls. He also gave them certificates of appreciation on behalf of Deputy Commissioner JPS Sidhu. Members of the Rotary Club, Anil Sharma, SP, Gurmandir Singh, naib tehsildar and other prominent personalities of the division were present. |
Thieves strike at Sector 23 Prachin Shiv Mandir again
Chandigarh, May 4 The temple authorities stated that it is the sixth time in the last one year that thefts have been reported in the temple and the police have failed to nab the culprit. The thief, who is seen taking out money from the box in the CCTV footage, broke the locks to take out the same. He, however, could not gain entry into the main temple as he was unable to break the grill and was seen trying to break it in the footage. He took out whatever money he could from near the small idols on the outer side of the temple. Inspector Dilsher Singh Chandel said the CCTV footage was not clear and there were 15 persons sleeping inside the temple making the entire story doubtful. “We are still investigating,”he said. |

City lad smashes all to bag title
Chandigarh, May 4 A class V student of Vivek High School, Sector 38, bagged his first major title of his career. In this national tournament, held from April 30 to May 4, Ishaan won all matches and defeated top-seeded players to claim the title. "I am happy to win my first national level title. And will try to carry forward the performance. Playing in Chandigarh was a great help to rise tall among tough competitors," said Ishaan, over a telephonic conversation while on his way back to Chandigarh. Ishaan started his winning spree with defeating Mohamed Farhan Farrok 3-0 (11-4,11-2,11-9) and in his next match he defeated Ansh Mehta with an identical score of 3-0 (3-1,3-11,2-11). In his next knock out game Aaryaman Jaising became his victim. He defeated his rival by 3-11,1-11 and 9-11(3-0). In the semi-finals, he blanked second seed Akash Gupta at 11-8, 11-8 and 11-5 (3-0). Later in the finals, played today, Ishaan outplayed top seed Athrva Yadav 8-11,7-11,10-12 to claim the title. Earlier, in last nationals, he finished 19th in the tournament. The ISA tournament is a national level under-19 3-star tournament with good participation in all age groups. Walking on the footsteps of his father (national level squash player), Ishaan had also won Chandigarh Squash State championship for two consecutive years in the boys (U-11) category. "I was trying hard to win tournaments but I was lacking in gaining enough experience to compete against good rivals. And two titles of Chandigarh State Squash Championship helped me to gain confidence. The tournament witnessed a great competition even in sub-junior category however I kept my calm and slowly attained my aim. I am happy and the good part is I can carry forward this confidence to win upcoming championships," said an elated Ishaan. He trains under his father and uncle, who were national level champions in senior category. "He still needs to cover a long distance in learning the good and bad part of squash. This title has landed him in the pool of confidence and all he needs is to carry forward the same. Upcoming years will be difficult for him. I will try to train him at his best," said Saurabh Nayar, his father and coach. |

Chandigarh, May 4 In the first match, the team of Infosys XI defeated Dell side by 66-runs. After electing to bat first, the winning side posted 166 runs for 9 wickets in the allotted slot of 20 overs. Vishal (43 off 26 balls), Anirudh (40 off 36 balls) and Lakshay (30 off 14 balls) scored a lion's share for the winning side. For bowling side, Raman picked up 2 wickets for 19 runs. In reply, Dell team bundled out on a mere total of 100-runs in 14.3 overs with Aman (22 off 30) and Adarsh (17 off 15) contributing a major share. For bowling side, Omkar (2 for 16) and Raghav (2 for 15) claimed two wickets each. In the second match, PGI XI defeated ATS Limited, in a super over match. Batting first, the winning team posted a total of 178 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Manoj helped the team's total with his individual best score of 63 runs in 26 balls. He was equally supported by Krishan, who posted 49 runs off 35 balls and Inder, who scored a quick fire 32 off 25 balls. For bowling side, Govind was the pick of the day with claiming 3 wickets for 33 runs while Vikas claimed 2 for 38. Chasing the target, the ATS side levelled the score in the last ball of the match. Saurabh (58 off 47), Sandeep (38 off 18) and Vikas (27 off 10) scoring quick fire knocks enabled the team to level the score. For bowling side, Hansraj claimed 3 for 12 while Krishan took 2 for 12. In the super over, PGI bowlers maintained their calm and restricted the ATS side on a modest total of 3 runs , to ensure team's win. |

Ex-Punjab Ranji player to officiate in IPL
Chandigarh, May 4 Earlier in 2013, Navdeep has officiated in the first match between India and Australia during an ODI series as fourth umpire back. 39-years-old Navdeep, has played for close to a decade for Punjab and took 144 wickets in 44 first-class games. He was member of the Duleep Trophy-winning North Zone team in 1999. He is an employee with AG Punjab and posted in Chandigarh. He has been a consistent umpire at the domestic level since 2008. — TNS
