Nexus detected between building branch officials, property owners

Teams of UT officials, who yesterday inspected around 25 commercial buildings for violations, have stumbled upon a well-organised nexus between the staff of the building branch and property owners to facilitate passing of the “non-compoundable violation” as compoundable.

The condition of gunman Jaipal, who suffered gunshots on the New Year’s Eve, when he was accompanying the son of a senior Punjab cadre IAS officer KBS Sidhu at Five degrees restaurant in Nirjhar Vatika here, has become critical. The family members have shifted him to Fortis Hospital, Mohali, from the PGI.

Despite treatment available, ‘third sex’ faces stigma due to low awareness

Welcoming the recent judgment by the apex court granting legal recognition to the ‘third sex’, beneficiaries and their families are still expressing concerns over their social acceptance. If the statistics at the PGIMER are anything to go by, the level of awareness, however, on the existing medical treatment for the ambiguous genetalia seems low among the general public.

Mohali admn drops pamphlets to appeal to voters
Mohali, April 27
The Mohali district administration showered 80,000 invitation cards from a plane to appeal to voters to exercise their franchise on April 30. Pamphlets were also printed to spread awareness among residents. The residents, particularly children of the district, appeared to be excited when they saw a chopper raining pamphlets, containing a message to cast their vote. The chopper, which was especially engaged by the Mohali administration under its special Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) drive from Patiala Aviation Club, started dropping pamphlets in the town at around 5.45 pm.

Cycle tracks fail to serve purpose in City Beautiful

Chandigarh, April 27
Garbage and mud dumped on a cycle track on a road separating Sectors 21 and 20 on the Sector 20 side in Chandigarh. Ram Tirath (35) has been pedalling down to Sector 28 from Kishangarh village ever day during his 15-year stay in the city. He, however, has hardly ridden his bicycle on the cycle tracks. Mistakes in Classes XI and XII NCERT biology books
CBSE fails to inform students about errors

Chandigarh, April 27
Call it the lackadaisical attitude of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) authorities or their apathy towards students that despite being errors in the Classes XI and XII NCERT biology books, the authorities have not taken any initiative to inform the students about the errors. Besides, they have also not clarified whether the answers keys of the All-India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Test (AIPMT) would be valid as per the information available in the NCERT books.

Two held for thrashing shopkeeper
Chandigarh, April 27
A financial dispute turned awry today when a shopkeeper was allegedly bashed up and an attempt was made to abduct him by the accomplices of a financier. The police have arrested two recovery agents of a Panchkula-based financer for allegedly threatening shopkeepers of the Krishna Market, Sector 41, on Sunday evening.

With the arrest of three members of a gang of thieves, the Crime Branch of the UT police claimed to have solved 15 cases of burglaries in Sectors 19, 20, 22 and 23.
The accused were identified as Rakesh Kumar, alias Lucky (21), Vikas alias Vicky (22), both residents of Sector 20, and Tilak Raj alias Monty (20), a resident of Sector 22.

CGC votes to elect president

Braving the heat while sipping beer, in a relaxed mood, the members of the Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) participated in the annual election today. The Returning Officer said 1,030 members, out of the total number of 1,800 members, cast their votes.

Eco Friendly Sports Organisation (EFSO) and the Department of Environment observed Earth Day and Earth Week from April 22 to 27. The event concluded with a walkathon from Sukhna Lake to New Public School, Sector 18. Around 500 students, judges, senior advocates and senior officials participated in the event.
