City players may miss football nationals
Chandigarh, April 22 The tournament to be held under the aegis of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) will begin on April 26 and the participants have to report at the venue by April 25 evening. A total of three 18-member teams, including boys (U-19), and girls (U-19) and (U-17), are to represent Chandigarh at the national event. With reserved berths being sought at the eleventh hour, the chances of teams’ participation in the championship are dull. Sources said the local authorities tried to get reservations in two superfast trains but they have a long waiting list of 158 and 216. Earlier, the tournament was expected to be held in December 2013 but it was postponed by the organising committee of the SGFI. It is learnt that the SGFI e-mailed the new dates of the championship to the local authorities on April 15 evening following which they started arranging for tickets. DPI (Schools) Kamlesh Kumar said, “We will try our best to get reserved berths for players. We will also seek local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal’s help as we cannot travel with so many girls without reserved berths.” District Education Officer (DEO) Ram Kumar Sharma remained unavailable for his comment on the issue. Meanwhile, coaches are having a tough time dealing with parents seeking confirmation of their wards’ participation in the national event. Also, the final announcement of the team has been put on hold to avoid any further confusion. The trials to select players were held last year and now, the coaches are finding it hard to recall some players. “The UT Administration has enough funds to spend on various activities. They could arrange air-tickets for the players. After all, they will represent Chandigarh only,” said a parent.
