Lawfully drunk???
Is 25 the right age to drink alcohol? The government thinks so! However, youngsters are in no mood to mix drinking with legalities
Jasmine Singh

Freedom of choice… Talk to any youngster about imposing a limit on the age for drinking, marriage, time limit for discotheques and the first argument that comes to their mind is the freedom of choice. They definitely don’t need anyone to tell them when to start. It is a matter of choice for them. So, when someone mentions that the legal drinking age is 25, youngsters would just smirk or laugh it off!

They don’t care to get into the legalities of this, no one is consulting the log books either. It is no big deal for them. Irrespective of a defined legal age for drinking, young boys and girls on the contrary are taking to boozing at a much earlier age. Is their something wrong with this? Is it okay to ignore the law? Youngsters definitely have much to offer on this, including the restaurant or bar owners, who take the politically correct way out.

Age no bar

For parties, they certainly don’t need an age to hang out with friends! “This is the point,” Karanvir Arora, a student of mechanical engineer, Tangori, can’t hold his excitement, “These days, right after the school, youngsters start partying, hostel get-together, parties, college trips, peer pressure, name a thing that doesn’t encourage drinking. Do you think a group of boys sitting together would care to check the drinking age?”

No matter how reasonable Karanvir sounds, most people are of the view that youngsters are not responsible drinkers. Rash driving, eve teasing, youngsters most of the times don’t know how to handle drinks and end up messing up their own life.

Saranpreet Sandhu, 24, and his two friends who have returned after completing a one-year hotel management course in New Hampshire, ridicule the whole idea. “We know what we are doing. If we can make a choice for our career or which girlfriend to date then why can’t we decide when to drink. Most of our friends started when they were 21,” he adds.

“Besides, if you still think I am being silly, then tell me which school or college gives education on harmful effects of drinking. Is their any effort to educate the youngsters? In fact, what most movies show is a heart-broken actor drinking to forget his lost love! They say the best poetry is written when one is drunk,” he turns to his friends for a hi-five.

The legal age for drinking, however, varies from one state to the other. Recently, the Delhi government was thinking of lowering the drinking age to 21 from 25. Amanpreet Kaur Dhinsa, an orthopedic surgeon and a mother of two young girls, takes an objective look at the situation. “Do you think kids wouldn’t drink if parents scold or keep a strict vigil on them? More than defining the age for drinking, the debate should be on enforcing rules related to drinking. Drunken driving or imposing a ban on certain places, eating joints could solve the problem.”

Sensible step

All said and done, youngsters do find their way out despite the ban or rules. Restaurant and hotel owners also find themselves in a difficult spot when it comes to not serving drinks to youngsters of a particular age group. Ginny Chawla, managing director, The Altius Hotel, says “We should promote responsible drinking. At our place we ensure this at least. We give an electronic card to the customers. They have to produce this card to buy drinks. And we don’t give this card to anyone below 25 years of age. Sometimes, people forget their identity card, or if someone below 25 accompanies a friend and takes drinks then there isn’t much we can do,” adds Ginny who has created a web page PUBLIC ( people united for better life in city) to promote better living in Chandigarh. “Youngsters should understand drinking is for fun and not to mess up.”

An actor and a gentleman
Mona

High tide: Gavie Chahal
High tide: Gavie Chahal

Actor Gavie Chahal is in a happy state these days. The couple of films that he is working in are on the floor and he is happily juggling the roles of a terrorist, an army personnel and a Rajasthani villager!

In Chandigarh, for a shoot of a film, Gavie opens up on his work and personal life…

Chosen as the brand ambassador for Ma Boli International Punjabi Film Festival, Vancouver, 2014, Gavie considers it a matter of great pride, “My home base is Mumbai now, but I am connected to my roots. What better than getting our mother tongue the due it deserves?” says the actor. He will be in Vancouver for the three-day festival, and looking forward to it.

He will also be shooting for a film Jugni Back to Roots in Canada, a film being simultaneously made in English and Punjabi. Gavie is two-timing Bollywood and Pollywood and that leaves him with no time for himself. Three of his Hindi films are on the floor — Black Currency (he plays the head of a militant organisation); in Ghul Makai (he plays a Pakistani army officer); in Sakoo he plays a Bishnoi villager. “All the three roles are so different that people now call me a versatile actor.”

He is more relaxed with Punjabi films. Both Yarana and Pyaar, Yaar and Panga are centred around friendship. While the first one is an action film, later is a comedy.

Though Gavie is happy playing on both the turfs, he wishes Pollywood to be more professional. “I understand the problems. The audience is not yet open to new cinema and producers have to earn benefits to sustain. But I am looking at the brighter picture in the future.” Happy at being recognised finally (he was honoured for his role in Ek Tha Tiger by Journalists Association of India), Gavie is happy putting in more and more hard work to earn for his family.

While most actors are quiet on their marital status, Gavie isn’t the one to be on guard. “I don’t want to unnecessarily expose my family. But yes if you ask me I am father to two beautiful sons — Jasbir (6) and Fateh (3). And I can afford to be in shoots constantly because my wife Gurminder manages the home front,” says Gavie who takes his family on shoots as much as he can!

Creative diva: Bipasha Basu
Creative diva: Bipasha Basu

Keeping busy now has a different meaning for Bipasha Basu. In between shooting for films and advertisements (she is the face of at least six products) and fitness CDs, she finds time to visit the office of The Trunk Label every day, at least when she is in Mumbai.

When she is shooting outside Mumbai, she operates her office from her laptop. As the creative director of the label, which is an accessory brand, Bipasha knows that she has a huge job at hand. “The idea is to introduce people to fashionable accessories, which are pocket-friendly. But with stiff competition in the e-commerce segment, I am sure it is an uphill task,” says the actress, who is loving her new job profile of an entrepreneur.

If competition bothers her on one hand, on the other, it keeps her going. “There is competition in every field but your products need to stand out, only that’s the way to have a strong client base.” In The Trunk Label, she finds her dreams of owning a fashion brand, coming true. “I jumped at the opportunity when the Label Corp team approached me with a business proposal.” As a part of the creative team, she ensures that the design of each product is unique and not a mere replication. Also, as the brand ambassador of the label, she has her responsibility increased manifold. “Since, I am the face of the brand, I ensure that whatever we produce promises quality. Also, I am much disciplined because I know my employees will now look up to me for motivation.” As for her connection with the fashion industry, Bipasha has walked the ramp for many of her designer friends, initially as a model and then as a show-stopper when she became a celebrity. That she says helped her develop a keen eye for designs.

After being a part of the glamour industry for so long, she has learnt how to deal with the pressure of being a public figure. Her personal life has made headlines in the past and is continue to do so as she is going around with Harman Baweja. “Those who understand that I keep my life personal, I respect them. Those who don’t, I don’t bother to give them any clarifications. I just let it be,” says the actress, who is loving the attention she is getting, this time as an entrepreneur.

A tough call
Preeti Singh’s second book Crossroads is about a woman who is torn between commitment and her desire
Mona

An abusive husband on one side, a tender lover promising a brave new world on the other, Kavita is at the crossroads of life. Which way would she turn…is what Preeti Singh's second novel Crossroads is about!

A content writer from Panchkula, Preeti took to writing full time few years back. Flirting with Fate was her first novel. Encouraged by her readers, she has come out with the second book, Crossroads: It's about time, which is published by Access.

The 250-plus page novel is dedicated to Indian women. "It's a story of a woman who can live with an abusive husband but is scared to start afresh."

The novel that Preeti claims to have started writing at Chandigarh Railway Station took a year to complete. The novel has some 20 characters. "Most of them are real people, and I have used real names." Accompanying her at the launch of her book at Chandigarh is hairstylist Shaan who Kavita always turns to for an instant high that only a great hairdo can give.

Like most books, hers too take an autobiographical note. "In fact, this was the biggest challenge that people would judge me from my story but I had to go ahead and take it out. People get angry, aggressive, but I chose to pen it down," says Kavita.

While her first book Flirting with Fate took her five years (she wrote most of it while taking breaks in Shimla), Crossroads was quick in comparison. "Well, I had learnt the tricks of the trade by then."

Interestingly, a fiction writer, now with two books to her credit, Preeti isn't a fiction reader at all. She turns to self- help books when it comes to reading. "I love spiritual tomes. Mine is an endeavour to be a better human being," says Preeti.

In love with her pets, her novel too comes alive with them…there is a parrot named Twitter and a dog Amber Singh. "There is so much to learn from pets. While you and I are constantly trying to change people, pets accept you as you are."

Elated by the reviews that Preeti has got so far, she clarifies that writing a bestseller was never her intention. "I wanted my readers to connect with Kavita's story. When a reader calls me and says that the story made him or her cry, I feel content." Her message in Crossroads is simple, "Marriage is a beautiful institution. Make it work. But when you know it's over, there is no need to drag it!"

Aimed at our society, the book is as relevant to women as to men, "For a relationship to fail it takes two. And, together the two can make it work too!"

it’s rocking
Everybody loves this one!

While the deposits of the long gone hippie era still continue to find much influence in today's blues, the advent of the true blue neo-classical trance blues is making quite a statement in the music scene. It's neither psychedelic, nor does it reflect heavily on the classic rock from the mid 50s and 60s.

This new genre is discovering a place for itself while it hangs steadily on the strings of the 70s blues when it comes to vocals, as it explores the hi-tech sound alteration from the console. The brand-new track to hit the UK top 40 is Nobody to Love by Sigma, which is a British Duo. The song was originally a bootleg remix of Bound 2 by Kanye West, released in January for free download. It received support from major British radio stations, including BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra so it was reworked into an original track. Here's what the Chandigarh folks say about the new EDM track…

Hooked up

I really like the music of the song, the lyrics too, which make perfect sense. It's a song about love and there are times when you are tired of loving when there is nobody to love. This song has been playing in my head ever since I heard it first.

Kanika Dhimman, student, Law Department (Panjab University)

Visual pleasure

It's a nice song, but what I like the most about the song is its video. How many times do you see a song video graphed on two beautiful hippie women on a road trip? I like the sound of the music too.

Karan Singh Gill, agriculturist

Wholesome package

I like the song. It's refreshing to hear a track that has good music and does not require much effort to make sense of the lyrics. It's easy on ears, mind and heart and I like the tune loops too.

When love strikes
Parvesh Rana

I am a 31- year- old bachelor. I have dated many women but I have fallen in love with my boss. I don't know how to approach her, one she is three years older than me and two she is my boss. Please advise.

Pratik, Mohali

If you have really fallen in love then it is a nice thing. I hope this is not just infatuation. Try finding that out first. Also, see if she has some interest in you. I wouldn't suggest approaching her straight away. Wait for a while before you say anything.

I am a 24-year-old married woman. I have moved to Chandigarh with my husband. Everything is going well, except for the changes I see in my husband now. He has a huge social circle, he parties with and I feel left alone.

Sakshi, Chandigarh

I bet your husband has found some old friends but this is perfectly alright. You also try to make friends, find new interests and the most important part discuss things with your husband about this. And if you have already, then see what is holding his interest for long!

Arjun Kapoor unplugged

On shoot: Arjun Kapoor
On shoot: Arjun Kapoor

The actor talks about his upcoming movie 2 States, working with Alia Bhatt, family and more…

Tevar is on

I am happy that I am doing a film with my family after I have done three-four films outside. My dad knows that I can deliver and it takes the pressure off of me. They have taken me in the movie because of my talent and not for the heck of launching me. Working with Sonakshi is fun. I am glad that she said I am not over-friendly which means I am not a cheap or pile-on. I take that as a huge compliment.

Pretty, talented Alia

I think she is a great girl and very talented and very pretty. We get along well and we hang out a lot. I am yet to see her movie Highway. She is very intelligent and honest too. A lot has been said about our kissing scenes but it is the most natural thing for people to do when they are in love. How else are we going to show a live-in relationship? The media is just writing too much about us because a headline about kissing will grab attention. I mean if you ask me, I cannot say that I did not like kissing her or that she is a bad kisser. That is rude. So I don't take it seriously and I know it will be forgotten once people will see the movie.

Varun Dhawan rocks

I saw Main Tera Hero and I liked it. I think it is commendable that Varun Dhawan chose to do such a hero-driven movie and he has pulled it off on his shoulders so well at a time when we are expected to do meaningful or real films. I tried to pay homage to the traditional hero with Gunday.

Anil Kapoor inspires

He is extremely supportive and I cannot wait to work with him. I hope we get a good script. He might play my younger brother or father. He liked my work and Gunday and found it commendable that I had done a hero-driven seventies style film. He also came to the sets of 2 States in Ahmedabad to see the vibe and he loved it. He is an inspiration to all of us with his fitness and his desire to improve himself constantly.

A film you can relate to

I feel it is a sweet movie and it is different because it tells you what happens once people decide to get married in India. Not only do the two people have to love each other, their families have to love them as a couple and each other too. It is a very identifiable movie. Krish's character is closest to me, compared to the other characters I have played. He is a soft-spoken, emotional regular guy. I tried to come from an honest space.

Are you ready for this Natwarlal?

UTV Motion Pictures recently announced that their much anticipated con thriller earlier titled Shaatir will now be called Raja Natwarlal. Emraan Hashmi plays the role of a conman in the movie and the new title Raja Natwarlal completely captures the essence of his character and the film.

About the film, Hashmi said, "Ever since I heard this title, I've been after UTV to get it. It etches out my character perfectly and is extremely catchy. Also, because it fits in so well with the space of the film, it will help us in promoting the film very well."

Thrilled about the title change Kunal Deshmukh said "It's a fantastic title and takes the film to another level. I always wanted to present Emraan in a never seen before avatar. He plays a master street con artist - the modern day Natwarlal. So the title is just apt."

Emraan plays a modern day Natwarlal who along with his partner in crime, lives off short cons and day-to-day hustles in Mumbai. The movie progresses through many twists and turns, cons and more cons, leading to a big one. The film is a total masala entertainer, which will take you through the world of con and philosophies of conmen. The film is slated for release on August 29.

Hero, once again

Director Nikhil Advani has started shooting for the remake of Subhash Ghai's Hero. The film marks the debut of Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj and Suniel Shetty's daughter Athiya. He tweeted this picture as saying: "Mere do anmol ratan. Don't think this is what @Anaita_Adajania had in mind when she started styling."

While the original was produced by Subhash Ghai, the new Hero is being produced by Salman Khan. Buzz is also that Jackie Shroff who acted in the original might make a token guest appearance in the remake, for old times' sake.

A film on Guru Dutt

Producer Manish Goswami, who has produced popular shows like Aashirwad, Daraar, Kittie Party, Milan, Parampara, Sarrkkar and the ongoing Kaisa Yeh Ishq Hai...Ajab Sa Risk Hai on Life OK is all set to foray into Bollywood. He will soon make a movie, which depicts a chapter of Guru Dutt's life.

The film is based on Bichde Sabhi Baari Baari, the Hindi version of renowned Bengali author Bimal Mitra's Binidra (sleepless). Manish says, "I bought the rights to the book around three months back and bounced the idea off to my brother Manoj Ji (Kumar). He asked for a copy and within two days, called me. He said the book has all the ingredients for an interesting film and if needed, he is ready to come on board as a script doctor."

Manoj Kumar adds, "I would always be there when my brother needs me. Also, I would ensure no injustice is done to these characters as I know them personally. The film has to be shot aesthetically." Binidra was written by Mitra in the wake of his close friend Guru Dutt's suicide. Manish further adds, "The movie is about the professional and personal turmoil in the late actor's life. I am yet to zero down on an actor for the title role as everything is at a nascent stage."

CHATTER BOX

Leading on

Piyush Sehdev entered Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke (SSLK) in November and within few months he has become the lead of the show. His character has progressed well and is now accepted by the viewers. Here he talks about his journey, success and more.

Your role in SSLK has become popular. Did you expect that?

When I was called for the role, I was told it was one of the important characters. They wanted to experiment with other story tracks but that did not work out. Soon, people began enjoying my track with her. Currently, people are lapping up Kabir and Rachana's chemistry. I am glad to be accepted in the role and get appreciation.

How are you enjoying the show?

I am having a lot of fun on the show. Though I end up working for 16 hours a day including travelling for two hours to and fro to the sets but it's worth it. The show is doing well and all of us in the unit bond well.

Your weight in various shows has been under radar...

Yes. I had to lose weight for SSLK as Rachana is half my age. For Shapath, I had to look like a tough cop. Infact, the channel wasn't convinced with me as a cop. Actually my character Abhigyan in Shapath was the second lead but soon after the pilot they made me the main lead. In Ramayan, I had to look perfect.

What does your wife think of SSLK?

My wife Akangsha Rawat loves the show but she doesn't like the fact that I shout at Rachana so much. She has done many shows in the past including Solah Shingar.

You have done multiple roles Shapath, Ramayan and now SSLK. Which one is closest to you?

Playing the cop in Shapath is the closest to me as I am an Amitbah Bachchan fan. I also wanted to play Ram or Krishna to show people my talent in a mythology. But I love Kabir from SSLK too as the role has numerous emotions and it is not one dimensional.
