Girl tops M Sc (maths):
A student of DAV College here, Sanjoli, has topped in M Sc (maths) Part-I examination. The college is affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh. College principal and PU senator Sanjeev Kumar Arora felicitated Sanjoli on Thursday. Sanjoli scored 84.4 per cent marks. Anil Makkar, Head of the Department, hoped that she would work hard to maintain the position next year.

Amritsar
Couple killed in mishap:
A man and his wife were killed in a road accident as their car, in which they were travelling, rammed into a tree near Beganwali village of Fazilka district on Thursday. The accident occurred on their return from Hanumangarh in Rajasthan. They had gone to the neighbouring state to cast vote. The deceased have been identified as Sunil Kumar (30) and his wife Vanita Rani (28). The collision was so fierce that they died on the spot. They are survived by two sons and a daughter. Locals thronged the local Civil Hospital to console the bereaved family.

DGP rank for 2 officers:
Rajinder Singh, a 1982-batch IPS officer, and SK Sharma, a 1983-batch IPS officer, were on Thursday promoted as Director Generals of Police (DGPs), an official press release said. The state already has five DGPs - GD Pande, Sanjiv Gupta, Sumedh Saini, Suresh Arora and Rajan Gupta (on deputation with the Centre).

Holiday on April 30: April 30 will be a weekly paid holiday in the state, an official press release said on Thursday. The holiday has been declared to enable those working in factories and shops and commercial establishments in the state to exercise their democratic right of voting in the Lok Sabha elections.

Travel agent booked:
The Tanda Police have booked a travel agent for allegedly duping 13 people of Rs 1.07 crore. Balkar Singh of Bains Awan village has alleged Nirmal Singh of Guru Ka Dhab village in Kotakpura had taken money from him and 12 others on the pretext of sending them to Canada.

Khanna/ Khamano
CM takes out rally:
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said he was hopeful of getting residents' demands fulfilled. He stated this during an election rally in Khanna. Badal told the residents that they would make a mistake by not supporting the SAD-BJP. He said the AAP would taste defeat in the elections, adding that Manpreet Badal was a puppet of the Congress. The Chief Minister appealed to the residents to support Kulwant Singh, SAD-BJP candidate.

Election rally
: The SAD-BJP combine took out an election rally at the Grain Market. The party paid Rs 22,400 as rent. The venue was changed following rain. Khanna SDM said the party had not violated the code by using government land as it had paid the rent. He stated that they could allow parties to hold rallies till April 20.

Phagwara
Woman run over by train:
Asha Rani of Bhagatpura was run over by a train at Chiherru on the Phagwara-Jalandhar rail section on Wednesday. The victim, an employee of Lovely University, was crossing the railway track to board a passenger train when the incident occurred. The GRP have registered a case and sent the body to the civil hospital for a postmortem.

Three held with drugs: The Phagwara police on Thursday arrested three drug peddlers, Balbir Singh, Mangat Ram and Harpal, all residents of Lakhpur Colony. The police nabbed the accused at a naka and recovered 125 gm of narcotic powder from them.

SpicMacay concert: Virtuoso Hungarian pianist Balazs Fulei performed as part of the SpicMacay concert at Welham Boys School here today. The pianist who started learning music at the age of eight years enthralled the students by his rendering of the classic pieces of Hungarian masters. He will be performing at Doon School tomorrow.
