Airlines, travel agency penalised for deficiency in services
Chandigarh, April 17 The opposite parties have been directed to pay Rs 50,000 compensation to complainant, Monika Garg, for mental agony caused to her. The complainant approached Unique Worldwide Travels to avail the service of China Eastern Airlines. The agency informed the complainant that in the Delhi to Melbourne flight via Shanghai, the stopover time period would be of more than 12 hours and therefore she would be provided a hotel stay with meals and pick-up and drop facility from the airport to the hotel in Shanghai. She was informed that wheelchair and escort facilities were provided for passengers, who were aged or travelling with small children. The complainant paid Rs 84,000 for the booking of flight. However, after security check-in at the Delhi International Airport no one came to provide a wheelchair and escort services. The complainant boarded the flight at the Delhi airport and was shocked not to have found seats for her small children. The complainant also alleged that vegetarian refreshment was not provided. |

Swarna Kesri, a resident of Dhanas, Chandigarh, reported to the police that an unidentified person tried to rob her gold chain near Ram Leela Ground, Dhanas, Chandigarh. A case has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.
Lights stolen from park
Thieves are on the prowl in Sector 27 as lights were reportedly stolen from various parks. Virender Pal Singh JE, Electrical, Sub Division No. 1, Chandigarh, reported to the police that four bollard lights have been stolen from various parks of Sector-27. A case has been registered. |

Mohali, April 17 The case has been registered under Section 3 of the Defacement of Public Property Act, 1977, and Section 127-A for violating the model code of conduct at the Mullanpur Garibdas police station on the complaint of the area’s block development panchayat officer. In the complaint, it has been alleged that the flexes of Chandumajra installed at the Kurali-Siswan T-point near Majra village were larger than the prescribed size, which was a violation of the poll norms. Acting on his complaint, the police have registered a case against an unidentified supporter of Chandumajra. An official of the district electoral office said: “It is mandatory to mention the name and other details of the persons in banners and flexes who install these”. “The police should book the person, whose name and other details were mentioned in the flexes in question, instead of registering a case against an unidentified supporter,” said the official. |

7 booked for fraud in separate cases
Mohali, April 17 In the first case, Surjit Singh of Phase II alleged that Baljit Singh of Phase VII and Tarlochan Singh of Sohana village duped him of Rs 3.50 lakh on the pretext of selling a plot in Sector 80. “The amount was given as advance money for the deal but the accused neither sold me the plot nor did they return the money,” Surjit Singh alleged. A case has been registered at the Phase-I police station. In the second incident, Navjeet Singh, a resident of Sector 69, alleged that he was defrauded of Rs 6 lakh by one Sandeep Kumar, who introduced himself as the director of an electronic news channel. “Sandeep had taken Rs 6 lakh as sponsorship money for a new year programme. When I reached the venue of the programme on the given date, I was taken aback on finding there was nothing. When I enquired from Sandeep, he said the programme had been cancelled,” claimed Navjeet, adding that the accused did not return the money. A case in this regard has been registered at the Mataur police station. In another case, the Phase VIII police have booked Kamal Attri of Sunny Enclave, Kharar, for fraud. In his complaint, Amanpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 42, Chandigarh, alleged that the accused had taken Rs 5 lakh from him last year on the promise of getting him a contract. “Attri could not get me the contract and gave me a cheque, which was returned dishonoured,” alleged Amanpreet Singh. In yet another case, the police booked Satnam Kaur and her two sons, Dharamvir and Sonu following a complaint by Prabhjot Kaur, a resident of Phase IV here. The complainant alleged that she had given the accused a sum of Rs 20 lakh last year and they have now refused to return the amount. |

Earlier, resuming batting from the overnight score of 281 runs for five wickets, Amritsar scored 517 runs in 152.2 overs before being bowled out. Kunwar Pathak and Shivam Sharma added 186 runs to the team's total before Pathak was caught by Amardeep off Akash Dhari. Pathak scored 131 of 306 balls studded with 22 boundaries and one six. Mumbai, Nagpur zones to clash for title today
Chandigarh, April 17 In the semifinals played here today, the Mumbai team defeated Ahmedabad by six wickets while the Nagpur zone beat Pune by 42 runs. In the first semifinal, which was reduced to 10 overs due to drizzle, the Mumbai zone sent the Ahmedabad team packin g by six wickets. Invited to bat first, the Ahmedabad team posted 75 runs with Divyang Badhiya leading the score chart with 31 runs. For the Mumbai team, Rajindra Shirke claimed two wickets for 13. Chasing the target, the Mumbai team scored 77 runs in 9.2 overs with Shekhar Bhor hitting an unbeaten knock of 22 runs. For Ahmedabad, Raunk Kumar took three wickets for 14 runs. In the second semifinal, the Nagpur zone beat Pune by 42 runs. In the allotted 20 overs, the Nagpur team scored a healthy total of 159 runs for three wickets. Paresh Sutane was the highest scorer for the team with 76 runs while for Pune, Mangesh Vadiya remained the best bowler claiming two wickets for 28 runs. Chasing the target, the Pune zone could only manage 117 runs for eight wickets. Sham Oka scored unbeaten 51-run knock whereas Mangesh Vaidya contributed 42 runs to the team's total. |
