Housing society president held for fraud
Mohali, April 14 Kukreja had allegedly transferred Rs 25 lakh of the Society to his firm’s account. While Kukreja got a share of Rs 13 lakh, his accomplice Parminder Singh got Rs 12 lakh. A complaint in this regard was made by the Society administrator, Jagdish Kumar. Following this, a case under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Mataur Police Station today. Giving details, sub-inspector Navin Pal Singh Lehal, SHO of Mataur Police Station, said, “Kukreja was arrested from his residence at Sector 37 in Chandigarh. The irregularities in the Society’s fund came to light during an audit of the accounts.” “An inquiry in this regard has already been conducted by Mohali Superintendent of Police (detective),” added Lehal. Notably, another case under similar sections of the Indian Penal Code was registered against Kukreja at the Mullanpur Police Station. It has been alleged that Kukreja illegally transferred the Society’s land worth over Rs 10 crores to a private firm, Altus Space Builders Private Limited, in March 2013. Jagdish Kumar was the complainant in that case too. Kukreja was booked for allegedly transferring the land (216 kanal 542 marla), registered in the name of the Society at village Ghandauli, to Atlus Space Builders Private Limited, while flouting Section 85(2) (X) and (XXXVIII) Rule 29 of the Punjab Cooperative Societies Act, 1961 here. Under the rule, no land belonging to any society can be sold or transferred without the prior written permission of the Registrar, Cooperative Societies, Punjab. It was alleged that Kukreja transferred the land without any permission and without taking the members of the Society into confidence. Notably, in January 2013, the management committee of the Society was also suspended by the authorities concerned, following complaints of irregularities by the office-bearer. Jagdish Kumar, assistant registrar, Dera Bassi, was then directed to look after the managerial works of the committee. The Society, having 276 members, has a total of 44 acres of land. |

Man booked for shifting liquor illegally
Mohali, April 14 He was intercepted by a special election surveillance team at a naka on the Phase 11-Chandigarh Road late last night. During checking, it was found that the accused had documents for only 123 cases, while the rest of the cases were being shifted from a vend in Phase XI to a vend at Jagatpura village without documents. “We have registered a case against the driver and seized the liquor cases,” said Inspector Jarnail Singh, station house officer of the Phase 11 police station. |

SGGS Club lift football trophy
Chandigarh, April 14 Minerva Academy held the possession of ball and slowly shifted their focus on regular penetration in rival’s defense. However, defenders of SGGS club maintained their combination and halted the strikers to finish on a good note. After a goal less first half both the teams returned with equal momentum to play next 45 minutes. In the 56th minute, SGGS’s strikers wasted a golden chance but reverted strongly and score the lead in the very next minute. Sidharth Sidhu scored, through a brilliant solo effort, the only goal of the match. Minerva academy failed to make a comeback and lost the final. Earlier, in the semifinals, Minerva Academy defeated New Public School, Sector 18, (NPS) 2-0. Robin scored the first goal whereas Sukbir of NPS scored an own goal. In the second semifinal, SGGS club defeated Minerva with a single goal. |

Match officials attend PCA training seminar
Chandigarh, April 14 The honorary secretary stressed that the match referees were told that the matches should be played in the true spirit. About the umpires, he opined that more they practice while officiating in various matches at their centers, more adept they would become in their profession. The seminar was conducted by former international umpires Jasbir Singh, Dr MS Mahal and Ranji Trophy panel umpire Navdeep Singh. The seminar was attended by 44 participants from various districts. The scorers’ seminar was headed by BCCI panel scorer Rakesh Sanghi and Rajesh Arora. A total of 11 fresh participants came for the seminar and after the seminar were put through a written examination. Tournament begins Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Championship for boys (U-16) for ML Markan trophy gets underway at various venues including Jalandhar, Mohali and Ropar. In the first match, team from Chandigarh will cross swords with Jalandhar at Jalandhar, Amritsar will take on Mohali at PCA Stadium, Mohali and Patiala will face Ropar at Dhruv Pandove Stadium, Patiala. Sushil Kapoor, spokesperson, PCA, said measures had been taken to ensure check on overage players. The matches will be supervised by PCA Panel umpires; match referees and scorers along with members of junior selection committee of the state. Last year, Patiala won the trophy with 21 points while Chandigarh ended as runners-up with 20 points. |
Sagar, Prinkle bag tennis titles
Chandigarh, April 14 In the final of boys (U-18) category, Sagar Bains defeated Rohit Kumar, to claim the title. Sagar overpowered his opponent in straight sets 6-1 and 6-1. Earlier, in the semi-finals, Sagar defeated Sumit Pal Singh in straight sets 6-2 and 6-4 while Rohit sailed into final defeating Raghav Talwar 6-4 and 7-5. In the final of girls (U-18) category, Prinkle Singh struggled hard to register win over Bhavya Wadhawan. The final match lasted for two hours. In the first set Prinkle won the game at 6-1 however Bhavya came back strongly and won the next set 4-6. In the final set, Prinkle kept her momentum and went all the way to win the title 6-1. In the semi-finals, Wadhawan beat Jannat Khurana 6-1 and 6-4 whereas Prinkle beat Seerat Pannu in straight sets 6-4 and 6-3. Amarpreet Kaur Sahota awarded the top position holders with prizes. |
Mumbai school beat DAV-8
Chandigarh, April 14 After winning the toss, Mumbai posted 235 runs before getting bundled out in 43.5 overs. Shoaib Khan’s brilliant knock of 51 off 70 balls with four boundaries helped his team to score the total. He was equally supported by Amaan Faroque, scoring 49 off 52 balls with six boundaries. Mohd Monis scored another 46 run in 52 balls with three boundaries to remain in the main scorers list. For DAV, Hardeep Singh and Amrit Lubana claimed two wickets each. While chasing, Chandigarh’s team bowled out for 201 runs in 42 overs. Ankit Naresh scored 50 runs off 52 balls while Shivam Sharma supported him with a 43 runs contribution. Hearing impaired Parul ready for international tennis tourneys
Chandigarh, April 14 Prior to this, she is also scheduled to represent the nation in the upcoming 2nd Open Deaf Youth Tennis Cup for girls (U-14 to 20 years), to be held in Hamburg (Germany) from May 28 to June 1. Marking her aim, a native of Patiala, has shifted her base to Chandigarh for taking rigorous training, at Tennis for Excellence Academy Kharar. “I am happy to receive the invitation for this tournament. The competition is known to be among the major competitions organised for deaf players. And prior to this, the Open Youth Deaf Competition in Hungary will be a good platform to perform. I am leaving no stone unturned, in practicing hard and to play under toughest of conditions,” said Parul. Earlier, she had represented India in the 22nd Summer Deaf Olympics Games held in Sofia (Bulgaria) in July 2013. She participated in both badminton and tennis events of the tournament. On other hand, her parents expressed their helplessness, in providing their child with financial help, on every tour. “The government should come forward and should finance these young hearing impaired players. On every tour, we are asked to bear all expenses. We are doing our best but sometime things get out of hands. Last year, the participation of these players was confirmed at the eleventh hour and was a difficult financial affair to deal with. This time also, we are going to pay on our own as we have no sponsors or government aid. Even the association, working for these players, plays their own card in sending the teams abroad. Last year, she was awarded with a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and after that no help was given. We are doing our best for her, rest it’s her luck,” said Avinash Gupta, her father. |
