Maan – the master
Gurdas Maan is a name that needs no introduction. Now, he is back with Punjabi film Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar
Jasmine Singh

In mindfulness, he wanders in the green open meadows, singing to the existence, allowing words to seep into the heart…now it’s time to return to the world where everything is questioned. Singer-actor Gurdas Maan, in a beige formal suit, sits down to answer all…in the same mindfulness. The placid singer is returning to the silver screen with the Punjabi film Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar (DVPV), directed by Manjeet Mann with the zest and positive energy of a first-timer.

With some relatively younger faces — Jassi Gill, Manav Vij and Raj Singh Jhinger — looking at him in awe, Gurdas Maan accepts every compliment by touching his heart. It is in this big heart that the man of the moment houses the immense gratitude he feels for everyone. “There are all kinds of people in the world; if I feel positive about myself the positivity resonates, thus making things bright and right,” says the singer who did not let an ounce of negativity enter his world or his films.

“We should all laugh; laughter is good, but then it is important to back it up with content as well,” Gurdas Maan talks about films being content-driven. “These days to be heard, one needs to ‘pao’ a little bit of ‘raula’ as well.”

His words pull, for a minute he lets you peep into his space… “I have a little bit of poet in me and then there is a singer that the people know me as. I have to thank the Almighty for the blessings and then comes the family,” he says, sipping tea and acknowledging every query with a smile garnished with a poetic answer. The next query comes for the singer in him…what is his take on music these days? “Music can never be bad; it has no language so how can it be bad? It is the lyrics that should be taken care of.”

His film Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar promises to entertain through the subject as well as music. The duet sang by Gurdas Maan and Jassi Gill, Mitran Da Dil Nachda, released today, undoubtedly, is like a crystal clear, colourfull ball.

Dream come true

The young and engimatic singer-actor Jassi Gill counts it as once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing with Gurdas Maan. “I have grown up literally worshiping him and his music; working with him has only made my dedication stronger.” Jassi, who has recently made a mark in his debut film Mr and Mrs 420, is also waiting for his upcoming film Mundeyan Ton Bachke Rahin. “The film is definitely one to look out for,” says the singer-actor who hasn’t changed even after the fans on his Facebook page keep increasing! “People know me for my singing and I am glad that they have liked me for my acting as well,” adds Jassi, who wants to keep doing different work.

Comic angle

Talking about being busy, the doe-eyed actor Manav Vij knows the art of getting into the circuit and coming out of it. Manav has enjoyed every bit of working with Gurdas Maan and is keenly awaiting the release of his track. “It is going to be a bhangra rock kind of track,” shares Manav, who will be doing a bit of comedy in DVPV.

Direct line

Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar doesn’t conform to any genre — a family entertainer is what the team calls this movie. The director Manjeet Mann wants the audience to see and enjoy, rather than look for any genre. “This is a film for all, it isn’t a comedy and certainly not comedy for the sake of comedy,” says the director, who makes her comeback after three years. “I hope I have delivered what is expected of us,” she says, looking at that one man whom she has enjoyed directing — Gurdas Maan. “Times have changed, we don’t have the patience we used to have; had it not been for that patience Punjabi film industry wouldn’t have reached where it has,” Gurdas Maan offers. He admires singers such as Nooran sisters, Master Saleem and he also shares one last secret from the movie Secrets. “Nothing is bad; it is there in your mind, let it only see positive,” he looks at the half cup of tea he has been holding for a while. “Half-finished, half-full, you decide,” he gazes on.

On the All Fool’s Day, let the good times roll…
Mona

If you are reading this story just like you would on a normal day, well, you have been spared the crown of the Foolish King or Queen by your friends and family! Tread with care, as today you don’t want to believe even the closest around you.

Celebrities from the region share some interesting memories.

Close range

DJ Shilpi Sharma is basking in the success of her DJ Baby Doll remix. She remembers how a couple of years back she had told her boyfriend how under family’s pressure she had decided to tie the knot with someone else. “He was out of the city, but immediately flew back shedding tears and begging me to stay,” says Shilpi. She is ready with her tricks this year too.

Lovely affair

RJ-actor Dhanveer is all set to befool some celebs today, but years back it was his classmate who had him in the soup. Most of his college life was spent chasing girls, so when one night a girl invited him home to meet her father so that they could get married, he was on cloud nine. “At 7:30 in the morning, all dressed as dulha, I was at the appointed place, Gol Market in Patiala University, happy that actually there was someone who wanted to marry me,” recalls Dhanveer. However, his to-be father-in-law was nowhere in sight for the next couple of hours. “It was then that she called and said it was just a prank,” he says.

Play act

Actor-comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi, during his college days, created a huge, hype about a play that was going to the national competition. “Everybody was waiting. Our principal, Ashwani Kumar Sharma, at Doaba College, Jalandhar, was seated in place even though it was vacation time, with his colleagues, friends and family to witness the much promised play for the first time,” recollects Ghuggi. Only no student, no play was to be seen! “There were no cell phones then, so our parents were called on landlines. Our parents duly told what they were told - that we were out rehearsing. It was only much later when someone pointed out the date that the fun began!” They were scolded really badly the next day, most of all Ghuggi as he was the captain of the drama team! Thankfully, April 1 saved him!

Face value

I don't follow any particular regime as such. But moisturisation is important for me as I have dry skin. I don't use any chemical on my face. I do Pilates to keep myself fit and that makes me glow too.

Well oiled

I try to oil my hair regularly and it feels nice too. It's a kind of stress-buster. I try to get a body massage often. I need it also because I spend so much time on my feet in heels.

Style tips

Brands don't really matter. I would be happy to travel in my jeans and kurta and walk around in pyjamas for that matter. I can stay in my track-pants all day and feel comfortable. Style is more about your attitude and it is not really about what you wear. You need to carry what you wear.

I love junk food and I love eating in Delhi because the food is amazing, no matter where you go. I eat whatever I want and then I exercise with dedication. I love home-made food too. I am a big foodie. I love Italian food.

Benegal to recapture Punjab’s history

One of the most renowned filmmakers in Hindi cinema, Shyam Benegal will be making a 90-minute film on the turbulent history of Punjab, a task which has been entrusted on him by the Government of Punjab.

Benegal is known for some of his brilliant work in Hindi cinema, just to name a few: Ankur (1974), Bhumika: The Role (1977), Kalyug (1981), Mandi (1983), Zubeidaa (2001) and more recently Well Done Abba! (2009).

He will be starting off with the work by monsoon as soon as he is ready with the script and is expecting the film to be ready by December. He feels the project is a great initiative by the government as a lot of youngsters aren't aware about the formation of the present-day Punjab.

The film will first be screened at the cultural centre, and later will be available on other platforms for viewing.

Rings a bell?

Troubled pop star Justin Bieber has reportedly gifted a ring to his on-off girlfriend Selena Gomez, which she has been wearing for quite some time.

Bieber, 20, and Gomez, 21, had sparked rumours that they had rekindled their romance earlier this month after the duo were seen together on several occasions. "The ring was a gift from Justin, it's not an engagement ring, but they are back on and very serious. Her family is extremely worried that she'll do something crazy like elope with him," a source said.

"Selena is totally wrapped back up in Justin, it's the same pattern happening all over again," the source added. Some weeks ago, the pair apparently had a two-hour private dance lesson in Texas after enjoying a romantic breakfast and shopping spree. Recently Bieber had posted a picture of Gomez on Instagram which was captioned as "The most elegant princess in the world." —PTI

Will they, won’t they?

Media proposes, Katrina disposes! Ever since Katrina apparently started dating Ranbir all that we have been hearing from her is nothing but firm denials. The actress has never ever acknowledged her lover in public life. A couple of days back media was abuzz with rumours of Katrina Kaif having given an ultimatum to Ranbir, warning him to mend his commitment phobic nature or else it would be 'over.' Sensing that matters are getting a bit complicated, Ranbir decided to fall in line and reportedly promised to tie the knot with Katrina sometime in 2015. Blessing them was none other than Neetu Singh who was said to have never liked Katrina.

But as is Katrina's nature, soon a deluge of denials arrived. When asked about the impending marriage, Katrina said, "I don't know about this, it has come in media. It is news to me as I got to know when someone sent me a message about this."

Assuring that there is no marriage in store for her at the moment, Katrina said, "There is no such thing. If there is something like that happening, I will be the first one to tell you all about it. But, there are no such plans as yet." Katrina added that she doesn't get disturbed by such news reports anymore as she has got used to it. Well, even we have got used to your denials, Katrina. May be it's time for you to come up with a new line.

Tech challenged

Superstar Rajinikanth, whose next film Kochadaiiyaan is set to take 3D films a step further in India, with its ground-breaking photo-realistic motion capture technology, says that he is not all tech-savvy.

This kind of technology, a first in an India film, has been used in Hollywood blockbuster films like Avatar.

"I had come here (Mumbai) for Robot, which was one of its kind film. And now after four-and-a-half-years we are here for Kochadaiiyaan which is a highly technology-oriented film. I don't know anything about technology but I am put in these films...it is like God's plan. It is challenging but a nice experience," Rajinikanth, 63, says. The film takes the audience on a musical adventure journey through larger than life battle sequences, intricate period detail and real life actors modelled in the animated world of historic India. The film stars Rajinikanth in a triple role and Deepika Padukone among a host of other acclaimed actors. He praised daughter-director Soundarya for all her work and effort on the film, which will release in six languages this summer. — PTI

Salman Khan plans to make Yellow in Hindi

Superstar Salman Khan, who watched actor-producer Riteish Deshmukh's Marathi production Yellow recently, is so touched with the film that he is now keen to remake it in Hindi.

"We are speaking to Riteish (Deshmukh) to make this film in Hindi," Salman says. Salman also says that he will have the film's director Mahesh Limaye on board for the Hindi remake and will also have Gauri Gadgil - on whom Yellow is based - in the film. Yellow deals with children with special needs and learning differences. It features Upendra Limaye, Aishwaraya Narkar, Usha Nadkarni and Mrunal Kulkarni in key roles.

Theatre for Emma

What is on Emma Watson's mind? The actress is ready to take on "new challenges", such as making her stage debut after completing her studies this summer.

The 23-year-old is on the lookout for theatre projects. The former Harry Potter star, who proved her mettle in a series of movies since she moved on from Hogwarts, graduates from Brown University in Rhode Island in May.

"It frees me up to consider doing theatre, and I would love that opportunity," Emma said. As far as film assignments are concerned, after Noah, she will be in Toronto to film Alejandro Amenabar's psychological thriller Regression.

She wouldn't give too much away about her role, but said she wants Amenabar to stretch her, the way he did Nicole Kidman in The Others. — IANS

Parting in peace

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and singer Chris Martin plan to end their marriage amicably and the couple has reportedly decided not to fight over money and custody.

If sources are to be believed, the divorce will be relatively quick and there are no apparent conflicts. They will not fight over money and they won't fight over custody.

The couple have two children — Apple, 9, and Moses, 7. Sources close to the former couple told the website that this is "not a separation". They are definitely getting divorced. But both are concerned about serious PR damage if the divorce turns ugly, and they don't want to open the door to media reports about them straying from the marriage as well as other issues. Their concern is that even if the case doesn't go to trial, any allegation put down in legal documents could end up getting leaked and both Gwyneth and Chris agree that's the worst case scenario for both of them. — IANS

Fare & flair...
Minus the usual bling and celeb fare, the recently concluded Wills India Fashion Week made its viewers focus on one thing only—dresses. And here are our top five picks from the collections
Ashima Batish

Fashion that feeds on glitter and glamour opted for a diet change. It did away with junk like bling and fizz like celebrities and grazed on traditional weaves and dying techniques, quirky prints, innovative concepts, to emerge stronger. The latest edition of Wills India Fashion Week sliced out more positives and a few negatives. Though some designers presented an extension of their previous successful lines, most tossed a change that was welcomed and celebrated. Here are the hi-five that deserves a mention….

On the cards

Pankaj and Nidhi

The designer duo presented their collection, House of Cards, and as the name suggests the motifs or their signature graphic prints and embroideries were created with spade, club, heart and diamond patterns. What came out rolling on the ramp was a stunning collection that comprised boleros, capes, brass-buttoned high waist pants and skirts. In colours that ranged from green, black, white, blue, vermillion, it was probably one of the few collections at the week that had the right balance of sex appeal and aesthetics.

Molecular system

Namrata Joshipura

If Raakesh Agarwval presented a collection on day one of the fashion week that had all the avante garde designs, Namarta Joshipura attempted the same at her grand finale show. The creations were dramatic, futuristic, which the name of her collection, Electrons, promised. She presented a collection that was so apt for a red carpet outing or even a celebration of some kind. There were embellishments but that didn't overshadow the out-of-the-box silhouettes, only highlighted the beauty of creations. She also took the texturing to the next level, as twisted fabrics were woven into surfaces and appliqué works were created.

Signature style

Satya Paul

A print of tap is strategically placed at the button line, making path for the water to flow down. In another creation, water is being poured into a glass. Be it separates, sarees or one-piece dresses, each design was so Masaba, so quirky, so colour-blocked. The designer stuck to her signature style, but you could spot novelty even there. A safety pin print at the slit of the dress or a pair of scissors at another one's slit, explain the thought process behind the design. Titled Icarus, the colour palette included brown, lilac, pink, mustard, pink…For a change, even metallic registered its presence in her collection, though the use was minimal, used only in colour blocked sarees.

Dye hard

Urvashi Kaur

Tie-and-dye might be a technique centuries old, but it has been a favourite with fashion designers. This time, Urvashi interpreted the art of dying. 'Her revivalist' tendency comes to the fore with hand woven textiles, use of silk, Maheshwari, chanderi, tassar, tissue, matka, kota and khadi cotton. Her creations also have an androgynous element to it, a factor missing from most of the collections this time. To underline the fact, now wonder, she sent a male model down the ramp in a saree-like skirt, which had its pallu peeping out of the buttoned up jacket.

Just dance!
Any form of dance is good for Boogie Woogie Abhishek Sinha, be it Bharatnatyam or liquid popping!
Amarjot Kaur

Boogie Woogie, the show that hit the television screens in mid nineties, has been touted as one of the most popular and oldest dance reality shows. Evidently, anyone who wins the Boogie Woogie trophy is bound to click his or her heels jumping at least three feet high from the ground. We spare the reasoning for Abhishek Sinha's happiness and enthuse, not only for winning Boogie Woogie competition, but also for receiving the trophy from Amitabh Bachchan. We speak to him about his journey through Boogie Woogie and more…

The best feeling on the show…

Of course, winning the competition is a very good feeling, but what I loved the most is that I received the trophy from Amitabh sir. Also, I loved it when Varun sir came and lifted me up on the stage.

One thing that kindled your interest in dance…

I come from Jamshedpur and would often see my elder brother dancing, so that kindled my interest in dance. However, my mother was the one who got me to participate in the show.

Dance styles that you can set the stage on fire with…

I can totally do liquid popping, Jazz, contemporary, old school, new school, house, lyrical, folk, and even Bharatnatyam, though I don't like it as much as hip hop. One's got to learn classical to be able to work it through to the contemporary dances.

One person who inspires you…

It's Hrithik Roshan and I wish I could do the dance step which he did in his first film, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai in the song, Ik Pal Ka Jeena.

The motivation, which made you win the coveted Boogie Woogie trophy…

It was my mother's dream to see me winning the show and that was the only motivation that beat all the pressure hands down. Also, Javed sir used to support and encourage me a lot on the show.

What's next…?

I have been dancing on the sets of Boogie Woogie for four months now and haven't even given my exams, so I'll go and get done with my exams, complete my studies and continue working towards becoming an actor and choreographer.

Dance or studies, what's your pick?

I don't quite like studying as much as I love dancing, but I will get done with my studies first.

Colour me wild!
Satish Narula

The moment someone comes to know you live in Chandigarh, the first thing that comes to his or her mind is greenery of the city. But let us be more particular about it, it's the colour of the city that gives its best at a particular time of the year. And if you intend to call a friend or relative to show the rainbow magic of City Beautiful, this is the time. Tell him or her to be with you in the first week of April. Any delay would mean missing something significant about this city.

This is the time when the winter wanes and the spring springs up with all kinds of colourful ideas. There is nothing new in plants putting forth a new growth but it's all about having an eye to appreciate the beauty of nature. Different plants have different nature of growth and putting forth flowers with different colours but there may be variation in the same species. See the accompanying picture. The tree is Pilkhan (Ficus infectoria). It is growing as avenue tree on the road dividing sector 7-8, 17-18, 20-21 and also 11-12, 15- 16 too. You can see this tree at this time in different moods. As the new growth starts, it is coppery red turning to light green which with time matures to be deep green. What is more attractive about it is the shiny new growth.

Another tree with red growth at this time is Kusum (Schleichera trijuga). It is a medium growing tree and flanks the road dividing 34-35, 21-22 and 17-18. As the tree is deciduous in nature, the new growth appears red. It is also a photographer's delight for as a picture taken standing below the tree with the background of blue sky is the ultimate. The foliage turns deep green later and thick growth makes this tree very suitable for urban planting. It is not only the foliage that matters, it's bloom time too. Simble, corisia, Tecoma argentia, Tabubeia and many other start blooming now and paint the city red, orange, deep pink, and sparkling yellow. Tecoma argentia will be full with sparkling yellow blooms sans leaves. Another picture perfect feature against the blue sky!

The blooming could coincide or in succession but there is a time when almost all such plants overlap to give a riot of colours. And that time is almost about April 6 to 10. What?

There is no mention of colour blue at this time? The nature has provided an answer to this too. This is also the time when Patrea volubilis, the climber is at its best. If you want to see the magic of contrasts, go to the sector 33 terrace garden you will see this climber growing at the base of red leaved Kusum.

CHATTER BOX
Playing the fool!
Whether as an adult or as a kid, we all were fooled at least once on April Fool's Day or we fooled others. We quiz these television actors about their April Fool's Day memories and whom they would like to fool...

Smart act
Rucha Gujarathi
When I was in college my friends knew I was interested in acting, so they said a few directors were coming to pick the cast for their upcoming movie. I dressed up accordingly but when I reached college, I realised I was fooled.

In the class
Shraddha Musale
In the second year of college, a new student who looked old because of less hair acted as the English professor and since I was late, he yelled at me in front of the class. Later, I realised it was a prank. I intend to play a prank on my husband this year.

Scary manner
Sambhavana Seth
Last year, I was doing a story for a channel and they wanted me to faint on the sets to scare the production people. I did it, the moment I fainted everyone got scared. They all came rushing to me and then I screamed it was an April Fool's joke.

Getting high
Gunjan Uterja
We had kept a matka with red cloth and 'nimbu mirchi' in the middle of the road for fifteen minutes and had a lot of fun as people avoided it. I am planning to call people over for lunch and serve them bhang wala butter milk this year.

Watch out
Rishina Khandari
My brother had once got a bunch of alarm clocks and had set them at different places at my home on this day. It was a prank to remember. I would like to fool Ritesh Deshmukh as he himself is a prankster.

Flying prank
Yash Gera
One of my friends invited me for his wedding and I reached Chandigarh from Mumbai last year, only to realise that I was fooled. I would like to make a fool of Madhuri Dixit as I want to see her smile change.

B-day bash
Gulfam Khan
There was this one time when I was called for the reading of a script. That day all the artists were there, but the team was missing! The best April fool joke that I like to repeat is the one where a friend's daughter was born on 1st of April, but her husband came to see her the next day because he thought it was a prank!

Plastic food
Vahbbiz Dorabajee
Well, I would definitely want to play a prank on Vivian because usually he is such a big prankster. In school we fooled all our teachers by offering them plastic food. They all got a shock after they chewed it.

Shoot at site
Adhvik Mahajan
I was finalised for a lead in a big budget film when I was totally new. I landed up in film city as I was called there for the shoot. But when I reached there, I got to know there was no such shoot and it was 1 April. I was made a fool by two close friends. I would like fool Aamir Khan because he is considered one of the wisest men in India and would really want to see whether he gets fooled or not!

Food fun
Aniruddh Dave
Once in Jaipur, someone called me to his home for dinner as his mother had made special pav bhaji for me. When I reached the house, I found his doors locked. I want to fool an actor friend of mine who had fooled me on Holi.

Phone(y) pleasure
Roopal Tyagi
I was fooled by my neighbour-friend in Bangalore. I had taken part in the Kaun Banega Crorepati junior contest via phone. He knew it. So he called me from a different number and asked me a few questions. When I answered them correctly he said I had won Rs 1 lakh. I told my entire family only to realise in the evening that he had fooled me.

Cop story
Jay Soni
I had called fake cops and scared my dance instructor as well as the students once. One of them slapped me and everybody was scared. I would like to play a prank on my wife Pooja this year.

Cool school
Ssharad Malhotraa
I remember during school days I really used to play a lot of pranks on my classmates. One could get away with anything and everything under the sun exclusively on this special day. I would like to make a fool of one of my close friends, who keeps pulling my leg all the time.

Screen smart
Rohit Bhardwaj
Once a friend of mine told me he had booked the entire theatre for the film DDLJ and all our college friends were coming over, including the girl I had a crush on. When I reached the theatre, I realised it was a prank and we all had a hearty laugh.
