Govt depriving poor of basic necessities: Brinda
Hisar, March 31 The CPM leader said health, education and transport sectors were being privatised, leaving the people at the mercy of capitalist forces. "A large number of poor people are facing a huge debt for treatment at private hospitals. Lakhs of government posts are lying vacant," she said. She blamed Bhupinder Singh Hooda government for curtailing job opportunities on the one hand and claiming credit for reservation for a particular community on the other. She said the government had failed to ensure wages to women as some NREGS workers has complained to her that they were not getting full wages for work. Criticising the BJP for following the same 'disastrous' economic policies, she asserted that the Left meant to benefit the downtrodden, including the peasantry, unorganised workers and women, Dalits and minorities. She said it was imperative for these sections to rise above caste and religion and elect candidates of the CPM. Inderjit Singh, Surender Malik, Suresh Kumar and Jagmati Sangwan also addressed the gathering. |
With no star campaigner around, candidates bank on themselves
Faridabad, March 31 "Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj will arrive in Faridabad on April 5 to address a public meeting in support of party candidate Krishan Pal Gurjar," said district BJP president Ajay Gaur. He said she would be the chief guest at a public meeting in Dabua Mandi and no other top leader was expected to address any election meeting. Claiming that the participation of no other important figure from politics or films was on the cards, he said Gurjar was well placed. He said Gurjar had been getting a good public response and he did not need any star campaigner at present. When contacted, a spokesperson of the Congress said UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's rally at Mewat today would have a far-reaching impact as some parts of Mewat were a part of the Faridabad constituency. The party had fielded sitting MP Avtar Singh Bhadana for the third time. Popular Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kissen had visited the area to woo Purvanchali voters in favour of Bhadana. The spokesperson added that no other prominent leader or star campaigner was in the list except Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who would be here soon as part of his statewide roadshow. AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had organised a roadshow for party candidates in a few constituencies, including Faridabad. "We are banking on the common man as it is the fight against corruption," stated Sachin Sharma of AAP. The INLD had been relying primarily on Abhay Chautala, who had addressed a few meetings here in favour of its candidate RK Anand. Party supremo Om Prakash Chautala and his elder son Ajay Chautala were serving a jail term. Political sources said BSP candidate Rajender Sharma would have to depend on his personal work and resources as party supremo Mayawati had no scheduled visit to this constituency in the near future. |
Prestige at stake for Cong, INLD
Sushil Manav Tribune News Service
Sirsa, March 31 Chautala’s native village falls under Sirsa and his sons Ajay Singh Chautala and Abhay Singh Chautala are MLAs from Dabwali and Ellenabad, respectively, both under this parliamentary seat. Victory from Sirsa is crucial for Tanwar to prove that the confidence that his party reposed in him, by appointing him PCC chief at the age of 38, was not wrong. On the other hand, INLD candidate Charanjit Singh Rori’s victory in his home district is a prestige issue for Chautala, whose party has not been able to win any Lok Sabha seat in the state in the past two elections. The party's leaders have started door-to-door campaign in a bid to make conviction of Om Prakash Chautala and Ajay Singh Chautala in the JBT teachers’ case a poll issue. Party’s senior leaders Abhay Singh Chautala and Ashok Arora have already addressed meetings at Ellenabad, Kalanwali and Tohana. They are scheduled to address meetings in other Assembly segments of the Sirsa parliamentary seat too and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal will be addressing rallies in Ratia and Kalanwali on April 2. However, Rori’s candidature does not seem to have gone down well with a section of INLD workers, who were expecting former MLA Sita Ram to be fielded again. Similarly, supporters of another former MLA from Ellenabad Bhagi Ram are feeling upset over the denial of ticket to him. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has toured Sirsa twice for Tanwar. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will visit Sirsa on April 6 for a poll rally. If Chautalas have been able to win over a prominent Punjabi leader and former district HJC president Veer Bhan Mehta, who will be joining the INLD on April 1, Tanwar too has been able to sink differences with former minister LD Arora’s daughter Sunita Setia and son-in-law Rahul Setia, who wield considerable influence on the Sirsa Assembly seat. Sushil Indora of the HJC is banking on the “Modi wave”, though his party’s influence on this seat is limited. Modi will address a rally in Sirsa and Hisar parliamentary seats at Fatehabad on April 7. Mange Ram Dahiya of the BSP, Poonam Chand Ratti of the AAP and Ram Kumar Bahbalpuria of the CPIM are also in the fray. |
Kin take the lead in campaigning
Parveen Arora Tribune News Service
Karnal, March 31 They have divided the constituency among themselves. Each member covers nearly 35 programmes in a day with party workers. Kiran said, “It’s my duty to do the best for the victory of my husband.” To ensure third consecutive win of Congress candidate Arvind Sharma in Karnal, his wife Dr Rita Sharma, mother Bimla Devi and father Satguru Dass are making all possible efforts. Satguru Dass makes calls to supporters and sometimes goes to their house for personal interaction. Bimla covers 20 to 25 programmes in a day and seeks vote for him. Dr Sharma devotes nearly 13 hours daily in campaigning and covers nearly 30 meetings. “I am seeking votes on development works carried out by my husband,” said Dr Sharma. INLD candidate Jaswinder Singh Sandhu’s sons Gaganjot, Harkirat and Jastej and brother Baldev Singh are all out to woo voters in all nine Assembly segments for him. They are holding ‘padyatras’ and public meetings with party workers. Maratha Virander Verma’s wife Suman Verma, sons Varun and Vijay are also leaving no stone unturned to send Verma to the Lok Sabha. They are taking part in his election campaign by holding meetings in rural and urban areas. |
Surjewala seeks votes for Jindal
Kaithal, March 31 He said people living below the poverty line were getting food articles at highly subsidised rates under the FSA. He said the Centre government had taken the country ahead on the path of progress. The state government had set up seven power plants to increase power generation in the state, following which the farmers and domestic consumers were getting adequate power supply, he added. He cautioned people against false propaganda of opposition parties who had always betrayed the voters whenever voted to power. He said the state government, led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda, was providing amenities to the rural and urban population so that their living standards could improve. Vinod Midha, DDC president, Dilbagh Mor, Sudeep Surjewala and other party workers were accompanying the minister during his tours. |
INLD in dilemma over Modi’s Gohana rebuff
Sonepat, March 31 Different political parties are taking this statement in their own way. BJP leader Lalit Batra said Modi’s statement had given a clear message to the people that they had to push the Kamal’s button of the electronic voting machine. An INLD leader said the party had been seeking votes in the name of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal and former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and would continue to do so. Vinod Dhankhar, a senior Congress leader, said the Modi’s statement was an issue between the BJP and the INLD. The Congress had nothing to comment on it. “We are seeking votes on the basis of speedy development and pro-poor and pro-farmer policies of the government,” he said. In people's opinion, Modi’s announcement had brought cheers on the faces of the BJP supporters, whereas the INLD is in a Catch-22 situation, whether to support or oppose Modi in the election campaign. The Gohana rebuff has put the INLD in an awkward position when the party is willing to extend unconditional support to the BJP but its support is not being welcomed or even solicited. Political observers believe that the statement has given a new lease of life to the BJP-HJC alliance, which was perceived to be crumbling after the Karnal episode, where the HJC had to change its candidates twice under the BJP pressure. |
Candidates go the hi-tech way to attract voters
Jhajjar, March 31 “When everyone is getting high-tech in this ear of IT, then why not electioneering? Candidates are making good efforts to express their views before voters through voice messages. We too enjoy their voices,” said Ramesh Sharma, a youth associated with medicine business. Sudesh, a house wife, said she was surprised to get Kejriwal’s call on her mobile phone the first time. “I could not understand in the first instance that it was a recorded massage but now I like it as it is good to hear voices of the political celebrities whom we talk about daily.” “Every election is different in terms of challenges the parties face and the method to handle these challenges, too, differs in every election. What is significant about the Lok Sabha Election-2014 is the use of technology to coordinate and reach out to voters. The candidates are getting hi-tech indeed,” said Satish Tyagi, a political analyst. Dr Suresh Singhal, a personality motivator and freelance translator, said “Besides voice recorded massages, rampant use of Facebook, Twitter and other social media has set the tone for election campaigns. High-tech canvassing has also provided an opportunity to the electors to interact with candidates while sitting at home.” “Due to the rising use of IT, the candidates have not been able to keep themselves away from the social media as a record numbers of voters of their area concerned use internet and make their opinion after going through their activities and interacting with them,” said Virender Hooda, a social activist. |

Gurgaon rooted in tradition
Gurgaon, March 31 Apparently indifferent to the fact that the constituency has the highest number of youth and first-time voters, candidates are still harping on the Ahir vs Meo battle. The communities account for more than 40 per cent of the electorate. Not surprisingly, three parties have fielded Yadavs or Ahirs -- Yogendra Yadav of AAP, Rao Inderjit Singh of the BJP and Rao Dharampal of the Congress. The fourth candidate, Zakir Hussain of the INLD, is a Meo Muslim. All parties insist that caste has nothing to do with their choice but the fact is the pivot of campaigning in case of the three old-timers. Rao Inderjit Singh has alleged that Congress members are conspiring against him and trying to affect his Ahir vote bank. "The Congress has fielded Rao Dharampal against me in order to affect my Ahir vote bank, but that will not take it forward because Ahirs know who has been true to their expectations and interests," Inderjit said during a rally at Bawal. On the other hand, Rao Dharampal is relying on traditional party votes and personal relations with community leaders to win the Gurgaon seat for the Congress. "What relations is Inderjit talking about? Relations are between the Congress and Ahirs as the party has slogged for almost a decade to serve them. We need not brag as they know what we are," he said during campaigning. The INLD and AAP seem to be battling for Meo votes this time. The INLD has fielded Zakir Hussain, a turncoat from the BSP who had promised to change the facet of one of the most backward areas of the state as he was one of them. "Neither the BJP nor the Congress has ever cared to look at Mewat, leave aside developing it. Meo Muslims are one of the most backward communities, but despite being a major chunk of the electorate, never got attention. I know what my brothers and sisters go through and need and will serve you best. We can make a change for Mewat," he had been saying for around a week. AAP has made special efforts to woo voters, with party chief Arvind Kejriwal and candidate Yogendra Yadav camping in the area for two days. "The key issue is lack of infrastructure. The MLA from the area is the Transport Minister, but it has no rail connectivity. We are not fighting or banking on community votes, but on those who look forth to a corruption-free developed Gurgaon and Mewat," Yadav said. Residents of Mewat were hoping that the Congress would put up a Muslim candidate. With the party handing the ticket to a Yadav, many said they were disappointed. They might decide between the INLD and AAP and this divison of votes could be the determining factor in the constituency. |

All parties indulging in opportunism: CPM
Uchana, March 31 She was addressing a public meeting in support of party candidate from Hisar this evening. She said Congress was ruling for the last 10 years and had converted the country into a land of corruption. The Hooda government was offering lands to Vadra in Haryana while Modi was doing the same for Adani in Gujarat. The BJP was no less corrupt than Congress as was evident in the case of Yeddurappa, who stands accused in looting the coal mines in Karnataka, she added. Karat said there was no dearth of resources in the country but these valuable resources were being handed over to big business houses. This needed to be reversed and the rich could be taxed more to improve the lot of toiling millions and it was possible only by reorienting the economic policies as advocated by the Left parties. Inderjit Singh, party state secretary, also addressed the rally and claimed that CPI(M) had struggled for the livelihood issues of the toiling masses, the unorganised sector workers, the women and the employees. It was this struggle that would echo in the Lok Sabha only if the CPI(M) candidates succeeded. |

Namesakes add spice to poll battle
Hisar, March 31 In the Hisar Lok Sabha constituency, eight of the 41 contestants in the fray are named as Kuldeep. Sitting MP Kuldeep Bishnoi, president of the Haryana Janhit Congress, seems least concerned about his namesakes as he has other big names to worry about. Among the prominent rivals are Dushyant Chautala of the INLD, Sampat Singh of the Congress, Yudhbir Singh Khyalia of AAP and Mange Ram Varma of the BSP. A namesake of the AAP nominee is also in the fray. Apart from the sitting MP, 25-year-old Kuldeep Singh is the nominee of the Bahujan Shakti Party while the other six Kuldeeps are in the fray as independent candidates. Reacting to his namesakes in the fray, Bishnoi said, "It seems to be a ploy by my rivals, who think that by fielding Kuldeeps, they will be able to confuse voters. It will not harm me as voters are very wise. In the previous elections, my namesakes had been fielded to counter me." Four Dharambirs are in the fray in the Bhiwani-Mahendragarh parliamentary constituency, which is a issue of discussion here. There are total of 27 candidates in the fray in the constituency. Dharambir Singh, the BJP candidate, had recently quit the Congress to join the BJP. The other three namesakes are independent
candidates. |

No Modi wave: Sunderpur villagers
Sunderpur (Jind), March 31 This is how Ramesh, an illiterate farmer from Sunderpur village, depicts the knowledge of rural Haryanavis in the region. Ramesh, who went to school only for a day and deserted education after getting a slap from a teacher on the very
first day of school, was sitting along with other villagers at the chaupal when The Tribune team reached his village. Around 10 people between the age groups of 25-65 years with a hookah placed in there midst, were talking about the political situation of the country. “There is a
Modi wave in the country as he is a good decision maker,” said Jasbir Dhanda, a postgraduate in
mass communication, inviting the wrath of anti-BJP villagers. “Modi is the media’s creation. The ground
reality is different and there is no such wave,” said Surinder, an ex-serviceman and a staunch INLD supporter. This heated discussion on the fate of the next Prime Minister of the country was going on amid foul smell emanating from an uncovered sewage drain that crosses over from near the chaupal. A high voltage naked electricity wire hangs loose overhead, which may lead to a mishap, but the power department is yet to repair this wire. Dilbagh Singh, 65, a graduate and a farmer from the village strongly believed, “This country only needs Kejriwal.” As he was about to validate his political analysis, the supporters from other parties started criticising Kejriwal for taking Congress’s support. Looking at the ensuing commotion, a village
elder said, “Ye to roz ka kaam hai. Jab tak vote nahi padte, yahan roz sarkare banegi or tutegi. (This is a routine. Till the elections, we will daily make or break a government here).” |

Sukhbir working against coalition ‘dharma’, says state BJP chief
Ambala, March 31 Interacting with mediapersons this evening after addressing a few corner meetings in favour of BJP candidate Rattan Lal Kataria, Sharma said SAD was a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and its president should be careful while addressing public gatherings. Sharma said the kind of statements Sukhbir was issuing while addressing public gatherings was hurting party sentiments. He said that state unit had already brought the matter to the notice of the party high command and an appropriate decision would be taken by senior party leaders in this regard. He said party workers across the state were felling dejected by the stand adopted by the SAD in support of the INLD, which was contesting the Lok Sabha elections against its candidates in Haryana. The BJP chief cautioned Renuka Bishnoi, legislator of the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC), its alliance partner, to desist form issuing statements about who would be the Chief Minister of Haryana if the BJP-HJC alliance came to power in the state. He said all agreements had already been reached and there was no need to issue such statements. |

Bias against women in poll continues
Chandigarh, March 31 The number of women contesting this time is even lower than the 14 who contested in the 2009 General Elections. Of them, only two - Selja (Ambala-reserved) and Shruti Chaudhary (Bhiwani-Mahendergarh), both of the Congress party - won. This time, the three parliamentary constituencies of Sirsa, Sonepat and Rohtak do not even have a single woman contestant. These seats have 18, 23 and 14 male candidates, respectively. While Sirsa is the home district of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president Om Prakash Chautala, Rohtak is the home district of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. This time around, Shruti Chaudhary, grand-daughter of former Chief Minister Bansi Lal and daughter of Haryana Excise and Taxation Minister Kiran Chaudhary, is the only woman candidate to be fielded by any major political party
from Bhiwani-Mahendergarh, from where she is hoping for an encore. Shruti is the lone woman candidate among 27 in the fray. The highest number of women candidates - three - is in the Faridabad Lok Sabha constituency adjoining Delhi; against 24 male candidates. Gurgaon has just one woman candidate among 22 in the fray. "In Haryana, the bias against women, especially in leadership roles and public life, is too stark to be missed. It is a male-dominated world here. Even those who contest and win are related to big male leaders and their families," said Sheweta Ahlawat, a student of sociology in Kurukshetra. For the Ambala seat, which was represented by Selja and who recently resigned as a Union minister ahead of being elected to the Rajya Sabha, there is only one woman candidate, who is contesting on the INLD ticket. The adjoining Kurukshetra seat, from where billionaire industrialist Naveen Jindal is seeking re-election, has two women in the fray out of 22 candidates. The highest number of candidates - 41 - are contesting from the Hisar seat. Even here, only one woman is in the fray.

Jind residents compare Hooda, Kejriwal campaign styles
Jind, March 31 Known as INLD stronghold, the CM’s visit to Jind, with a huge cavalcade of vehicles, his repeatedly complaining speech that Congress did not get even a single seat from the district, comparison of the developmental grants received during the INLD and Congress tenure and his anxiety are the main topics of discussion. “The CM claimed that Rs 6,000 crores had been invested in the city. It is the biggest joke of the century as the city does not even have a single proper road. He came for a last attempt to persuade us as he knows that Congress is going to lose from here again,” said Shyam Lal, an elderly sitting at the bus stand market. Hooda allegedly violated the model code of conduct by blocking traffic in various parts of the district. He delivered speeches by parking his special rath in the center of the roads, apparently in violation of code of conduct. Kejriwal could not address city residents as he reached here after 10 PM on Friday and held a road show in the city on Saturday morning. “The CM’s visit not only cost the state financially as he travelled with a long cavalcade, the common man also faced great inconvenience due to the long traffic jams. All must learn from Kejriwal,” said Naresh, an AAP supporter. Amandeep, another youngster, said Kejriwal was making unrealistic claims and had failed to deliver in Delhi. He should not get another chance. There were many, who participate in all debates silently, but did not open their minds. “Ab to sabhi aayenge. Par pehle kahan the. (All will come now. But where were they earlier),” said Suresh Duhan, an elderly sitting in a market in front of Jat Dharmshala, where AAP chief stayed for a night. |

Panchayat tries to convince minister to withdraw case
Ravinder Saini Tribune News Service
Narnaul, March 31 Significantly, some residents of Koriavaas village were a part of the panchayat, which had announced a social boycott of the stone-throwers if found to be residents of the village. Having listened to the panchayat's plea, the minister expressed her inability to help them, stating that the case was now in court. Earlier, hundreds of residents of Koriavaas, Hasanpur, Rambaas, Maarauli, Dhaanaunta, Kaaroli, Basirpur, Kultajpur, Thana, Jorasi, Tehla and Mukundpur villages convened a meeting and decided to call on Choudhry, seeking withdrawal of the case keeping in view the youths' future. Thereafter, the villagers went to her residence here and put their point of view regarding the assault before the minister. She stated, "I know that the youths have been used as part of a conspiracy for political gains, but I cannot provide succour at this stage as the case is in court." 2 Captains ‘missing’ from action
Chandigarh, March 31 While Yadav was keen on the party ticket from the Gurgaon parliamentary seat for his son Chiranjeev, former Haryana Youth Congress president, Abhimanyu had expressed his desire to contest the elections and was willing to be fielded from Rohtak, Kurukshetra or Sonepat. Both were disappointed when the Congress and the BJP came out with their list of candidates. Well before the elections were announced, Yadav began lobbying for the ticket for his son, who is RJD chief Lalu Yadav’s son-in-law. The top leadership did not seem too interested in considering Chiranjeev and offered to consider Yadav instead. The minister initially agreed to be available to contest the elections, but backed out later on grounds that the ticket announcement had been delayed considerably, leaving hardly any time to campaign. Abhimanyu, too, seemed hopeful of getting the party ticket, especially after his elevation to national spokesperson of the BJP. Sources said though his name was considered for all three seats, other candidates in the race found favour with the party high command, leaving Abhimanyu high and dry. Since then, he has been “absent” from the state. Sources in both the Congress and the BJP maintained that the two leaders were not very visible during the campaigning for candidates in their pockets of influence. Though Yadav held a few meetings in Rewari for party candidate Rao Dharampal, campaigning in the area had been low-key. When contacted, Yadav said, “We have divided the constituency into various zones and workers are handling the campaigning. I go whenever and wherever I am needed. I have been campaigning in the adjoining Bhiwani-Mahendragarh seat as well since the seat has a sizeable number of Ahir votes,” he said. On his programmes in Rewari, he maintained that he would accompany Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on April 1 and the candidate on April 3, besides attending the April 7 rally. The sources maintained that a disappointed Capt Abhimanyu, a Jat leader and the BJP’s face in Haryana till the last elections, had kept away from campaigning in Haryana. Though Abhimanyu was not available for comment, BJP spokesperson Veer Kumar Yadav said the party had made him additional in charge of Uttar Pradesh. “He has been told to manage the elections in western Uttar Pradesh and has been organising rallies for BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi,” he said. Asked why the party was not using his services in Haryana, the spokesperson said he would be told to campaign in the state soon. Party sources said no programme had been chalked out so

Dharampal, Sonia tells Yadav
Sources said Congress president Sonia Gandhi, at a rally in Mewat on Monday, had a word with Capt Ajay
Yadav. Besides enquiring about his health as he had not been keeping well, she is learnt to have specifically told him to campaign for party candidate Rao
Dharampal. Though Rao Dharampal came to the minister’s rescue and said he was canvassing for him, the sources said Capt
Yadav, following this directive, had no option but to whole-heartedly support the party
candidate. |

Ignored for long, residents of this basti don’t give two hoots to elections
Kurukshetra, March 31 Still waiting to be in the mainstream, the residents of the basti treat elections as just an occasion when politicians from various parties come and make false promises. “It does not matter who wins, in the last several years not a single prominent leader has visited the area and they are not even keen to listen to our problems,” said Jagtu Ram, in his late 70s. In a population of about 4,000, there is only one metric pass,
Birju, who is now a door-to-door salesman. Birju said, “Because of illiteracy, our parents did not get a job and in this era, without any permanent source of income it is very hard to survive.” The whole community solely depends on chajh making and rag-picking and has an average income of Rs 100-150 a day. Another resident Prakash said, “We are peeved at the sham promises of the politicians. They just make promises but never fulfill them”. Maya
Devi, in her early 60s, said “I was only 16 when I came here after marriage and since then the situation has not changed. We do not even have the facility of toilets here, we have to go out to answer the nature’s call and it is very embarrassing.” With a choked throat, the old woman narrated the incident that happened a couple of days ago, when three men allegedly tried to rape a young woman who had gone to a nearby area to answer the nature’s call. She condemned the local politicians, MC and the administration for their
plight. Sohan Lal, head of the basti, said “From more than 100 years, we are here and cast our votes like others. Then why is there so much discrimination with us. Ration cards of many were cancelled, there is no sewerage line in the basti and our people are not being able to get the benefits of many government policies. We are not demanding luxuries, but just basic amenities to live life, but no one listens to us. This time, people are not much enthusiastic to cast their votes.” |

Police to reply on bail cancellation plea in Geetika case
New Delhi, March 31 The plea, filed by the brother of Geetika, alleged that Kanda being an "influential" politician, may tamper with evidence and influence the witnesses in the trial. Justice VP Vaish issued notice to the Delhi Police and fixed the plea for further hearing on April 17. The trial court had on March 4 granted bail to Kanda after the high court had enlarged co-accused Aruna Chadha on bail. The trial court had observed that Kanda was in judicial custody since August 2012 in the case. Chadha was arrested on August 8, last year while Kanda had surrendered on August 18.
