Abohar
4 held for smuggling drugs
: The police have seized 40-kg poppy husk and 2.5-kg opium from four persons, who had allegedly smuggled the contraband from Rajasthan. The accused, Manveer Singh of Ludhiana, Balwant Singh and Manjit Singh of Jalalabad, and Mangi Dass of Madhya Pradesh, have been arrested under the NDPS Act.

JE held for taking bribe: Rajasthan Electricity Board junior engineer (JE) Uma Shanker was arrested on Sunday for “taking” a bribe of ~2,000. He was remanded in judicial custody. A farmer, Rajesh Kumar Siyag, lodged a complaint, alleging that the JE had demanded ~10,000 for installing a transformer for a tube-well connection.

Additional charge
: The state government on Monday gave additional charge to two IAS and two PCS officers. An official spokesman said Suresh Kumar, Financial Commissioner, Development, and Addition Principal Secretary, Water Supply and Sanitation, will also look after the Department of Power and Non-conventional Energy. Karan A Singh, Principal Secretary, Industries and Commerce, will also look after the work of CEO, Punjab Bureau of Investment Promotion.

Hoshiarpur
21 cases of liquor seized:
The district police have seized 21 cases of liquor. The Talwara police have seized three bottles of liquor and a case containing 12 bottles from Jagannath of Talwara. Similarly, five cases containing 60 bottles were recovered from Parmod Kumar of Dusadka. The Garhdiwala police have seized 15 cases of liquor containing 180 bottles from Balwinder Singh of Himmatpura during checking at Mangarh village.

Farmers’ meet held
: Under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dakaunda), a large number of farmers on Monday took part in a ‘Pagri Sambhal Conference’, held at Bhawanigarh, about 22 km from here. The conference was held to educate the peasants about their rights and the historic struggle of Chacha Ajit Singh’s ‘Pagri Sambhal Jatta’ movement in 1907.

Tarn Taran
1 arrested for illegal mining
: Sarabjit Singh of Jhugian Kalu village, 50 km from here, was booked for illegal mining on Monday. A tractor-trailer loaded with sand was also seized from him near Kairon village. In another case, a vehicle laden with sand was seized near Bhalojla village, 45 km from here. The driver fled the spot.

Girl succumbs to burn injuries
: A 14-year-old girl of Madhanwala village under Pinjore succumbed to her burn injuries in a government hospital in Chandigarh on Sunday. The victim attempted suicide on March 25. In a statement given to the Duty Magistrate, the girl did not blame anyone for her suicide bid.
