Girl crushed to death
Kalka, March 28 According to an eyewitness, the incident took place at around 8.30 pm at the NH-22, Lower Bazaar, Kalka, when a recklessly driven truck, whose brakes had allegedly failed, rammed in to Verma Optical Clinic. Due to the impact of the accident, the legs of the 9-year-old had severed from the upper half. Rest of the body of the girl was found from drainage, while the legs were found from under the truck, said the police. The victim has been identified as Isha Goel, a resident of Ahata Himalaya, behind Verma clinic. The deceased was a student of Class V in Sat Vivek School, Kalka. Before ramming into the shop, the truck had hit an auto rickshaw and a rehri in the market. Gurmeet Singh, the auto rickshaw driver, and Shiv Kumar, the rehri owner, sustained multiple injuries and are undergoing treatment at Kalka CHC. The truck had not been removed from the spot till the filing of this report, since the police were waiting for the crane. Plea against Modi's rally venue returned
Chandigarh, March 28 In her petition, advocate Mandeep Kaur Deep had referred to a news item in a vernacular newspaper stating that the permission to organise Modi’s political rally had been granted by the UT Administration. Deep said the news report clearly mentioned that about 50,000 people were expected to attend the rally. As a result, the entry points would remain clogged. The worse-affected sectors included 20, 21, 33, 34, 35, 44 and 45. The petitioner added even religious functions were not being allowed in Sector 34 for the last six months due to an apprehension of traffic jam in the vicinity. She further submitted that already a ground in Sector 25 had been earmarked for holdings rallies, but “the respondents have ignored the fact for the reasons best known to them”. — TNS |

5 booked for assaulting student
Mohali, March 28 The police have registered a case against Shivam, Sachin Kaushik, Sumit Singh and two unidentified persons on the complaint of Gagandeep Singh under various Sections of the IPC and the Arms Act. Gagandeep Singh, who was admitted to the Kharar Civil Hospital, told the police that the three students had come to his hostel room last night and started hurling abuses at him. He followed them when they left the room and found a car parked near the gate. He was allegedly attacked again by five persons with sharp-edged weapons. One of the students even fired into the air, he added. |

Jewellery worth Rs 1.25 cr seized from bus in Lalru
Mohali, March 28 As per reports, the police were checking a Haryana Roadways bus at the Lalru naka and came across a big suitcase that allegedly contained 29 boxes of gold jewellery. There were 528 jewellery items in the boxes. The bus was coming from Delhi to Chandigarh. The owner of the suitcase did not reveal his identity to the police. The police was carrying out checking in view of the Lok Sabha elections. The suspect told the police that the jewellery had come from a jeweller in Mumbai. The police then called Excise and Taxation officials and handed over the suitcase and the owner to them. They have, however, so far not assessed the exact cost of the seized jewellery. — OC |

Cop hit by vehicle, hurt; two arrested
Chandigarh, March 28 The police arrested two Mauli Jagran residents, who are brothers, for hitting the victim at a checkpoint near the Housing Board light point. The SUV belonging to the two accused has been seized. The police arrested the accused, Jaspal Singh and his brother Suman Kumar. Both have been remanded to two- day police custody. The incident occurred when the two were coming from the Chandigarh side on when they were signalled to stop but the driver, Jaspal, accelerated the vehicle. As a result, SI Krishan Kumar was hit and was later rushed to a hospital. He sustained minor injuries and was discharged today. The police suspect that the act of the accused indicated that both had might be involved in some criminal activities. Hence, they had made an attempt to escape after spotting the cops at the naka. The victim was deployed with the Crime Branch. The police had laid the checkpoint after a tip-off that the accused were smuggling liquor, to be distributed during the elections ,in a car. When the SI tried to stop the car on suspicion, the accused accelerated the car after knocking him down. Both were immediately arrested. Bus driver booked for rash driving
Chandigarh: A passenger was injured after he fell down from a moving bus at the Tribune Chowk here today. The police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver of the bus (RJ-05-PA-2395) Murari Lal of Bahadurgarh district of Rajasthan. The passenger, Vinod Kumar Joshi of Uttarakhand fell down from the bus near the Tribune Chowk and got injured. He was alighting from the bus when the driver accelerated and he fell down. The police have registered a case of cheating against Krishan Lal, a Sector 20 resident, who submitted fake surety bond at the District Courts, Sector-43, in Chandigarh. The accused has been arrested.
Theft at Sector 15 house
A theft was reported at a house in Sector 15, Chandigarh. Thieves decamped with cash and gold jewellery worth lakhs. In her complaint, Bhanu Jain reported that some thieves had stolen Rs 3,60,000 cash, a diamond pendent set, diamond tops, five pairs of tops, two rings, a chain and a pearl gold pendent set after breaking into her house. Family members were away when the thieves struck. On return, she found the front door open and the house ransacked. A case has been registered. — TNS |

Chandigarh, March 28 The team had set up a naka near the furniture market on the road separating sectors 53 and 54, Chandigarh, where the BMW car (CH-01AK-3877) of Ranjodh Singh was stopped. The team seized the cash after it did not get satisfactory replies to the queries pertaining to the money. The team also stopped a Bolero car (PB-23K-5976) carrying Rs 1.33 crore in cash. Tiger turf putting surface installed
Chandigarh, March 28 Captain of the course Bobby Sandhu said, “The tiger turf putting surface is an artificial putting green which looks and feels like real grass. It has been developed by a New Zealand-based company. The synthetic putting surface is spread over an area of 1,000 square feet. It is best suited for perfecting a putting stroke.” Gurinderjit Sandhu said, “Six holes have been made on this green. It has a warranty period of seven years and requires no watering or maintenance and remains lush green throughout the year.” The green is also UV-stabilised, so as to minimise fading. A perfect putting surface will now be available to golfers throughout the year. All golfers can now avail the facility at the club. The green was inaugurated on Thursday along with the newly-renovated swimming pool at the Chandigarh Golf Club. |

Chandigarh, March 28 In the second match, Coaching Centre GMSSS-19 defeated Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, 14-09. In the junior category (boys), Coaching Centre GMSSS-23 beat GMSSS-28, 23-19. The main scorer from the winning side, Tarun Thakur, scored six goals, while Sandeep Kumar and Sumit both scored four goals each. In the second match under the same category, GNKS-30 logged win by defeating GMSSSS-16, 25-21. The main scorers from the winning team were Gurinder Singh, Deep Verma and Shubham Bhardwaj. Local teams to skip national hockey meet
Chandigarh, March 28 According to the honorary general secretary of the Chandigarh Hockey Association, Anil Vohra, the teams are unable to mark their presence in the meet due to the ongoing examinations of the players. “A written consent has also been received from local coaches in this regards,” said Vohra. Since the players were unavailable, no preparatory camp was held. Meanwhile, some players claimed that their examinations had finished much before the date of the tournament. “It is only because of some other players, who are yet to get over with their examinations, that we will have to miss the chance of playing in the nationals,” said the players. |

He followed a par card in the opening round with a six-over 78 on Thursday and conceded third place to Thailand’s Parathakorn Suryasri by two strokes.
