PU Senators demand regular Sports Director
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 25
Taking a serious note of improper functioning at the Directorate of Sports, Panjab University, the Senators demanded appointment of a regular director for the smooth and clear functioning of the department.

Amidst heavy argument, the demand was raised in a recent meeting of Senate held on March 22. In the meeting, it was discussed that the Directorate of Sports posses most of the modern infrastructure enough to uplift the standards of sportspersons and their performance, however, non-appointment of coaches and director has led to a chaos in the system. In the absence of a regular director, the chairman of the Department of Physical Education is looking after the functioning of the department, as his additional charge.

In addition, to this, the senators also raised objections against the performances of the SAI (Sports Authority of India) coaches posted in the campus. “The campus claims to have a world-class shooting range but I wonder where is a professional coach to maintain it or to impart training to shooters. The funds are not meant to adjust the dear and near ones. We don’t have our own coaches and the camps are being initiated by unprofessional people. We have grounds, athletics track and all other means but still we lack professionalism to some extent,” said Senator Varinder Singh.

When asked about players achieving laurels under such circumstances, the Senator added, “College teams under Panjab University are the one’s getting the laurels. The campus teams stand nowhere. We have only limited number of boats for water sports. There is no check-eye on the coaches appointed by SAI in the campus. Majority of players, who brought laurels, represents one or the other college. We are not misjudging their achievements but the campus should have something to cheer on. The coaches appointed with the teams have no past records of performances and the department is being run by only one or two officials and their families,” said Singh.

The issue of appointment of a regular director is pending since long. And in order to meet the shortcomings, Panjab University has conducted interviews for filling two posts of assistant directors for the Directorate of Sports last year however, later the posts were cancelled. “They were cancelled as we demanded that a director should be appointed first. The Vice-Chancellor should take some serious notice over the dying spirit of sports in the university,” said Singh.
