Seven councillors support dy mayor
Ludhiana, March 23
Even as the family members of 23-year-old Gagandeep Singh — who was allegedly beaten to death by armed assailants at the ‘behest’ of Deputy Mayor RD Sharma — are demanding his immediate arrest, seven councillors today came out in support of Sharma and said he would not resign until the probe was not completed.

The naked body of an unidentified woman, believed to be 25-years-old, was recovered from a small bridge near the Highway Factory at village Nandpur, near Sahnewal, today.

Plan to do away with dissection of human bodies

With science and technology advanced to a great extent, experts now believe that dissection of human bodies and animal cadavers is no longer required and should be instead replaced by computer-simulated dissection.

PU to launch its first annual magazine for youngsters

The Youth Welfare Department of Panjab University is all set to launch Jawan Tarang, an annual magazine, which would contain the writings of student competitors, who secured top spots in the Zonal, Inter-Zonal and university level festivals during the current session.

Villagers least concerned about eye care: Doctors

Major eye ailments, including myopia and hypermetropia, are caused because of lack of concern among residents of rural and suburban areas about eye health care and malnutrition. This was observed by a team of ophthalmologists after examining as many as 800 persons during the 37th eye camp organised by the local unit of the Punjab Mahavir Dal Shri Sanatan Dharam Parcharak Sabha at Bajrang Akhara Hospital here today.

The convocation and prize distribution function of GTB National College, Dakha, was held on Sunday on the college premises. Noted agronomist NS Malhi, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Kashi Talwandi Sabo was the chief guest. Delivering his welcome speech, Principal Guriqbal Singh lauded the contribution of Dr Malhi as a researcher, teacher and administrator. He also read the annual report highlighting the achievements of the college.

Mass marriage organised
A mass marriage ceremony of poor and needy girls was organised by Ma Bhagwati Club, Dandi Swami Chowk, at Pindi Dayal Dharamshala in Ludhiana on Sunday. The function was held under the leadership of chairman Ashok Marwaha and president Avinash Sikka. The newly-weds were given blessings by prominent persons, including Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, MLA Simarjeet Singh Bains, Davinder Sood, Madan Lal Bagga, Leena Taparia and Lakshman Dravid. The girls were given sewing machines, silver jewellery, clothes and utensils on the occasion.

Man booked for killing wife; absconding
Ludhiana: The city police have booked a man for allegedly killing his wife. The case was registered after the dead body of the woman, identified as Kaushalya Devi, was found from the migrant quarters in the Kanganwal area yesterday. The owner of the migrant quarters said the victim's husband, Jagdish, was also missing since the incident. Following an investigation, the police registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC against Jagdish. Jagdish is still at large.
