Ambala votes 2014 Bipin Bhardwaj Tribune News Service
Panchkula/Barwala, March 23 Accompanied by local MLA DK Bansal, the CM reached Majri Chowk where the Congress candidate, Raj Kumar Valmiki, along with his wife and party leaders, including Om Prakash Devi Nagar, Manveer Kaur Gill, a former president of Panchkula Municipal Council, and scores of others were waiting for him. Hooda surprised them by making an appearance from the rooftop of a specially designed vehicle equipped with a lift. The CM reached the venue late by almost 1 hour and 20 minutes but gathering was delighted to see him in the special vehicle. Party workers and supporters welcomed the chief minister by tossing garlands to the top of the vehicle. Some of them, including women, even managed to climb the stairs of the vehicle to hand over the garlands to the leaders, which led to chaos. Addressing the gathering, Hooda accused the BJP of ‘selling’ tickets for the election and also termed the party a ‘divided house’ saying the BJP stalwarts were sidelined in the ticket distribution process. The CM also claimed that that the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) was not in existence anymore. Boasting of the development works taken up during his tenure, Hooda claimed that Haryana was ranked 14 on the list of developed states in 2005 and during the Congress rule, the state topped the list in 2014. Starting from Panchkula, a cavalcade of nearly 400 vehicles accompanied Hooda to Barwala and Mauli with halts at Nada, Baulia, Ramgarh, Kot Billa and certain other villages. Hooda urged people to vote for Raj Kumar Valmiki, the Congress candidate. Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies constituted by the District Electoral Officer (DEO) to monitor any violation of the model code of conduct kept chasing the road show. The traffic on the Panchkula-Naraingarh road was disrupted at many places due to the road show. |

Cong stalwarts shying away from elections: Chautala
Kalka, March 23 Chautala said Congress leaders, including Union minister for Information and Broadcasting and Ludhiana MP Manish Tiwari, former Chief Minister of Punjab Capt. Amarinder Singh and Union Finance Minister P Chidambram, were shying away from the elections. These leaders betrayed the general public after their party came into power. Apprehending public fury against their non-performance, they do not want to face the electorate, Chautala added. Chautala was addressing an election rally for the INLD candidate for Ambala Lok Sabha seat, Dr Kusum Bala Sherwal, held at the Government College grounds here today. Taking a dig at former MP from Ambala Kumari Selja, Chautala alleged that during her tenure, she hardly visited the constituency. “She could not face the public and preferred going to the Rajya Saba,” Chautala alleged. “The INLD had played an important role in formation of the NDA government led by Atal Behari Vajpayee. Without the INLD support, the NDA could not have formed the government. This time too, our support will be crucial for formation of government at the Centre,” Chautala claimed. Earlier, accompanied by the party candidate, Dr Sherwal, Chautala reached the venue in a private chopper. Dr Sherwal said the Shivalik belt had been getting a step-motherly treatment for years and remained undeveloped. Her main focus would be on the overall development of the area, she added. Addressing the rally, Kalka MLA Pradeep Chaudhary sought votes for Dr Sherwal claiming that being a local resident, she would be easily accessible and work for the development of the area. Among others who addressed the rally were INLD spokesperson Seema Chaudhary, SP Arora and Sushil Garg. |

Ambika Soni's candidature
Akali camp a worried lot Akash Ghai Tribune News Service
Mohali, March 23 Though senior Akali leaders are cautious enough not to give any indication of nervousness, several local leaders and the activists of the party have started feeling that now Professor Prem Singh Chandumajra has to face the toughest competition. “Undoubtedly, Bittu was a weaker candidate as compared to Ambika Soni. He was facing internal rivalry and anti-incumbency factor. Now with the change, the road is not easy for Prof Chandumajra,” admitted an Akali leader while talking to Chandigarh Tribune. As Ambika Soni is very senior leader and close to Sonia Gandhi, no dissident in the Congress unit here now dares to go against her candidature. “With Ambika Soni coming here, the factionalism has come to an end automatically. Those local Congress leaders who were working against Bittu earlier are now distributing sweets,” said a senior Congress leader. He said Bittu was unable to solve the differences among several dissidents in his party. “We will win by a margin of over 1 lakh votes now,” said Balbir Singh Sidhu, sitting MLA from the Mohali area. On the other hand, Akali Dal leaders have already started a campaign against Ambika Soni, terming her a “paratrooper” candidate. “If she wins, where the people of the area are supposed to meet her. She lives in Delhi, while Prof Chandumajra stays in Mohali and is approachable anytime. This is what we are telling the voters now,” said Harmanpreet Singh “Prince”, president of the District Youth Akali Dal, Mohali. Apart from that, the Akali leadership is also banking upon the “Modi wave”. “People are fed up with the UPA government and now want a change. As people have made up their mind to make Narendra Modi the next Prime Minister of the country, they would vote for the Akali-BJP combine candidates,” said Akali leaders. According to sources, strategies in the Akali Dal are being changed to combat Ambika Soni. “The new strategies against the senior Congress leader will be revealed in three big rallies tomorrow, which would be addressed by SAD supremo and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the area in favour of Prof Chandumajra. |
