Bathinda, March 21
Giani Zail Singh Punjab Technical University Campus, Bathinda, today called off cultural events from the upcoming tech fest and also declared a half-day off after it received the news of the demise of one of its students, Kapil Goyal. Kapil was seriously injured in a road accident on Thursday night.

Blaming the faulty construction of the Dabwali railway overbridge, where Kapil met with an accident Director of the GZS-PTU campus Dr Prof Jasbir Singh Hundal said, “The planning of the ROB was faulty as while the road is four-lane, the ROB is a two-lane and sans a divider which is accident prone. Had there been a divider on the ROB, Kapil would have been alive.”

Kapil, a student of BTech (textile) at the GZS PTU campus, was riding pillion on a mobike which hit a car coming from the opposite direction on the ROB. His two friends, who were also riding the bike, sustained fractures. Kapil hailed from Anoopgarh in Rajasthan and was staying on the campus hostel.

Youngest of four siblings, Kapil is survived by his mother, two married sisters and an elder brother who runs a small mobile phone shop in Anoopgarh.

The family also couldn’t believe the uncanny similarity in which it lost two of its male members. Ten years ago, Kapil’s father had also met with an accident and succumbed to his injuries.

While Kapil’s family members couldn’t hold back their tears when they saw his body, their eyes also welled up as they couldn’t afford an ambulance to take the body to Anoopgarh and had to accept monetary help from the college authorities.

Out of 143 stalls, 116 were given to the private companies who displayed their private products ranging from pesticides, tractors, cars, agricultural tools and other products. Rs 100 per stall was charged from the roadside vends in and outside the venue of the Kisan Mela.

Apart from other variety seeds, maximum sale of basmati seed of PUSA-1121-100 quintal-was witnessed during the mela. 100 quintal of PUSA-1509, 90 quintal of PR-123, 100 quintal of PR-118, 100 quintal of PR-11, 2000 vegetable kits, 15 quintal moong, 75 bags (4 kg) of maize variety of J1006 was sold to various farmers during the mela.

The tractor moves in cotton fields to grow wheat seeds, enters standing wheat crop, spreads compost and sprays pesticides without damaging the plants.

The tractor, known as called High Clearance Tractor, was put on display for the farmers first time by the Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA). Its senior research engineer, Harminder Singh Sidhu said the self-designed tractor is a multipurpose vehicle which helps in accomplishing various tasks to increase per acre yield of various crops.

“We replaced the rear wide tyres with slim tyres and the tractor’s upper body is raised using special high-pivot axles to enable the vehicle to move in cotton or wheat fields without damaging the crops,” Harminder said.

He added that the basic concept to make vehicle was to sow seeds of the second crop while harvesting the standing crop to give ample time for the next crop to increase yield.

“For instance, the machine could be used to sow wheat in standing cotton crop. The high platform, slim tyre tractor easily enters the cotton crop to sow seeds with minimal damage to the cotton plants,” Sidhu said.

He added that at present, 10 field trials have been successfully executed in various villages of the Bathinda district in consultation of Punjab Agriculture University (PAU). “Today, we received 40 more queries during the mela wherein farmers were keen to have a field trial using this tractor in their respective fields,” he said.

The farmers were told that the use of this tractor was possible only in those fields where crop is already grown to accommodate the high-rise movements of tractors. “With little changes in the pattern of traditional sowing keeping in mind the use of high rise tractor, the seeds are planted by maintaining particular distance,” Sidhu said.

He pointed out that though the tractor is equipped to save time in sowing seeds to increase per acre yield, still they have open options for changes.

“This is the reason we have put it on display to get maximum queries from the farmers to make alterations based on farmers’ requirement. If proved successful in more trials, then the design and technique would be presented to the state government,” Sidhu said.
