State of affair
“I will sustain in the industry only if I have it in me,” says Alia Bhatt who clears on record that it's she who steers her ship with support from her strong family
Mona

Alia Bhatt is the girl on the go. She was adored as Shanaya Singhania, praised as Veera Tripathi and her Ananya Swaminathan act has already garnered some five million plus views on youtube.

Young and fresh, this refreshingly pretty girl is out to grab her fair share under the sun and totally unapologetic about it. In Chandigarh on Wednesday, Alia Bhatt talked about her films and more.

In 2 States, Alia plays a Tamil Brahmin— a Tam Bram to be specific, not just any South Indian. The film was challenging and interestingly it was not the language that was the trouble for this young actor. "I did learn Tamil for I had to talk to my parents in Tamil and they are significant part of the movie. More difficult was to be mature like Ananya is. I being me, I can be little childish at times, break into a giggle now and then, that's when my director had to reign me in," says Alia.

Highway garnered her praise as an actor, 2 States is much talked about even before its release. Compliments don't get into her head, not even bring a smile. "I and Arjun are just two per cent of the hype that the film has created, rest 98 per cent is the book."

Alia doesn't vouch that the book lovers would see the literal translation on screen. "A book cannot be transferred into the film. It would take some five to six hours to narrate all the episodes. And the audience cannot sit for more than two hours these days. So the director has taken out some chunks but he has been very sensitive to the book."

Interestingly, she read the book long back before the film idea was floated. How did she end up in the film? "It was the looks test. I was too young to play Ananya but then with the character I am growing up in the film."

Does the famous surname help her in bagging prestigious projects? "It does give me a podium but the rest is my own. No one has the patience of watching you if you are not good or casting you if you can't deliver, no one can afford to do that," Alia confidently clears her stand. One thing for sure, she is putting in all her efforts to shine through, including working on her birthday that falls on March 15.

Compliment her or question her on her credibility to start with acclaimed production houses, Alia takes all in her stride. There is much of kissing and lovemaking scenes in the film, how does she feel about doing something on screen that is a taboo in society. "Is it a taboo?" she shoots back. Grilled further, she maintains her stance, "It's fine with me as long as one takes precaution, as is shown in the film."

Up next, who is she dating? "Well, I read all about it. First I was dating Varun, I broke up, then I was dating Arjun. Now I have heard I am dating Ranbir. I am having hard time keeping up with all these boys," she makes all present break into a laughter before attaining a somber stance, " If I am dating anyone I wouldn't talk about it, I might have lied on that before."

Alia, who took up to acting seeing Govinda and Karishma dance in gardens, on roads, in homes, realised it later how hard life of an actor is. But when she acts, she is not looking for praises but living the character. "I want Ananya to get more love of audience than Veera and graduate with every coming films." Amen!

Family business

Father a filmmaker, mother an actor and sister a writer, does she plan to work with her family in future? "Totally, we always talk about it. In fact, we would like to do a Keeping Up with Bhatt Gals on lines of Kardashians. You wouldn't believe how retard we can get. We sure will be earning loads of money."

Chemical reaction

My chemistry with Arjun Kapoor has been labeled great. I didn't know him to begin with, once on the sets we got along like a house on fire. Kissing, lovemaking scenes are very awkward to deliver and I guess that awkwardness too helps in creating that magic on screen. — Alia Bhatt

No negativity
The infamous Sid of Uttaran, Sharhaan Singh, is okay playing the bad guy as long as it requires him to act
Manpriya Singh

It's been a usual journey to recognition, where theatre studies gave way to music videos, directorial stints and brief cameos to much better things. What brought him to the limelight like never before was a prime time soap opera. Uttaran's infamous Sid, played by Sharhaan Singh, has cast a shadow that refuses to go.

"I have somehow made that negative image, though now I'd like to break away from it…Somehow they think I can play negative shades better," he shares, while in Chandigarh, a day before the release of his upcoming Punjabi film Mr and Mrs 420.

"In the serial Uttaran, I get to play their typical TRP guy, who is brought in to increase viewership and then made to disappear for a while and then come back again," shares the pass out from Punjabi University, Patiala. "In the film I get to play a boy who makes an appearance during the last half an hour. He has a significant role in the climax, so I wouldn't call it a cameo, it's a special appearance."

While different roles are always challenging, it doesn't really matter whether he gets to play the bad boy or a good guy. "I love acting. Bring me anything that requires acting. Be it comic roles or negative characters."

What's next

Coming up are a couple of projects where he gets to step behind the lens. "I have written the scripts for Hockey and Aaape Pen Syaape. Both the films are different in their own ways. The first thing that comes to mind when I say Hockey is Chak De India. But it is a film not just about the sport, it is about negativity, sacrifice, emotions and relationships all within the ambit of sports. It is something on the lines of legendary Pargat Singh. We are looking at Diljit Dosanjh or any popular turbaned personality." He adds, "There is this Bollywood film Jeet Lenge Jahaan, where I play the lead villain and No Exit, a sci-fi horror film and Delhi Khabar, where I play an inspector with moustache."

His dream role comes as the unconventional or rather stereotypical Shah Rukh's Role in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. "That's because it is a very emotional role and yet very simple. One need not do new things, even if you play old characters in a new way, they are acceptable," he signs off.

The celebrity card
Gul Panag, Mallika Sarabhai—the political parties are playing the celeb quotient, but how receptive are the voters to their charm?
Ashima Batish
mallika sarabhai & Savita Bhatti
Mallika sarabhai & Savita Bhatti
mallika sarabhai & Savita Bhatti

Unlike acting, there is no crash course in politics. It’s on-the-job training--you lose, you win; make news, create controversies; take pledges, fulfill some, forget some; commit felonies, emerge innocent…. On that note, a celebrity opening an account in politics might get instant recognition but to convert his or her fan-base into a vote-bank isn’t a cakewalk. It takes one to interact with the masses, highlight parties’ achievements, run down the opposition and at least mingle with the crowd near elections. And yet we have celebrities, one after the other entering politics, ready to tread the path, which by no means is smooth.

If Savita Bhatti called it quits as a candidate for the Aam Aadmi Party, apt replacement is found in Gul Panag. And then there are other recent examples of Mallika Sarabhai joining AAP, Raju Srivastav enrolling in Samajwadi Party and Miss Pooja jumping on the BJP bandwagon. But to what extent star value can deliver? Young voters share their opinion.

Arshnoor Dhillon, ex-president of PU, feels the popularity of celebrities who enter politics is short-lived. “Till the time you have on-screen presence, people remember you. But once you are off it, on the field, campaigning for elections, people judge you differently,” he says. The reason, not all actors, singers, artists-turned-politicians are successful at the later. “Even if they were, they could only win for a single term. For some, it was event difficult to secure a seat for the second term.” He feels that rather people who are abreast with the ground realities of the area should be given such chances.

If you consider history, celebrities turned politicians haven’t fared that badly, especially down South. The fact that they have an added advantage can’t be negated. And that’s what makes Chandan Rana, ruling president of the Panjab University Student Council, believe that celebrity status adds weight to the resume of a politician. “Politicians with star value don’t have to meet as many people or go from house to house introducing themselves. They are already public figures, so half of the battle is already won.” The other half, however, he asserts is equally important, which comprises the election agenda. “You can’t underestimate voters, while voting, they take into account the complete profile and that has agenda placed at the top.”

The success of a celeb candidate in his or her field also is taken into account. A flop actor or the one lacking charisma might not make much impact as a political candidate. As Neha Verma, a student of MCM DAV college, says, “Pit Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan against any politician today, I am sure, their star power will win over politicians with years of experience in politics, but if you do the same with actors, who are not as popular, the results might be different.” However, there are actors, who might not be as popular but their contribution to society can produce positive results. Take Mallika Sarabhai and Rahul Bose for that matter. Dr Abha Sharma, secretary of the PU Student Council, makes a valid point, “Celebrities can make for good politicians but not great leaders. For that you need to have administrative qualities. They can be brand ambassadors or face of a political party but to pit them as candidates for election is a gamble.” As of now, in the heat of elections, many political parties don’t mind playing the celebrity card.

Crooked, yet charming
Jasmine Singh

If you spend a minute or two extra with them, they will convince you that they are anything but 420. However, when you see the trailer of their film Mr and Mrs 420, you will be enamored by their crookedness. Either way, these two charmers can spin the scene for good even under the watchful eyes of the director Ksshitij Chaudhary and producer Rrupaali Gupta.

“We have toyed with the number 420 so much during the making of the film that we all have something of it in us now,” shares Ksshitij, a seemingly quiet director. With everyone cursing the bombarding growth of useless comedy, here is one director who has complete faith in it. “There is a way to deal with comedy, there is a way to deal with punches and with Mr and Mrs 420 you will see it clearly.”

Making a Punjabi film is nothing short of a risk now, both director and producer, however, think otherwise. “Films are a risk like any other business, do your best and leave the rest,” adds Ksshitij. Rrupaali on the other hand believes in one mantra. “Films or business, if you give in your 100 per cent along with dollops of loyalty, chances of things going wrong are reduced.”

As for the reel 420s of the film, Babbal Rai and Jassi Gill, who await the verdict on their debut film, risk is a word that 420 don’t take into consideration. They laugh, “Movie is all about a great treatment, and this one has got the best 420 treatment.” These two have definitely got under the skin of the character! Babbal, who is enjoying the success of his music album Girlfriend, is the most sorted out 420 you have come across. The actor plays an actress in the film. “I had a tough time doing the role. It would take me two hours to get ready, but the role was so convincing that I could not have said no,” says Babbal, mimicking in a woman’s voice, something that he does well now. One attribute to qualify as deserving Mr 420.

Master Chef
Rocky roads!
Kandla Nijhowne

Relax dear readers, this is a food column though today it sounds deceptively like a story on cross-country trekking! Some quirky creator threw together some delicious bits of chocolate, nuts, dried, fruits and honey, melted them into a rough, misshapen mass and called it Rocky Road! It sounds

such a funky name for a candy-treat that would be fun to make and surely fun to dig your teeth in to!

The more popular version has soft, fluffy pieces of marshmallows lending a contrast to the velvety chocolate and the crunch of nuts. I bring you today an adult version of Rocky Road. It has stronger flavours of orange peel and crystallised ginger melded into smooth bitter chocolate with a whiff of Cinnamon. Glorious indulgence, enticing to say the least!

Rocky road bars

  • 200 gms dark chocolate
  • 50 gm butter (chopped)
  • 1½ tbsp honey
  • 50 gm digestive biscuits
  • 1 tbsp diced crystallised ginger
  • 2-3 tbsp candied orange peel
  • 30-40 gm almonds
  • ½ – ¾ tsp freshly ground cinnamon.1

Method

  • The chocolate into small pieces and place in a heavy bottomed pan.
  • Add butter and honey, then melt over very gentle heat. Twirl the pan regularly to prevent the chocolate from scorching.
  • Place the biscuits in a strong poly bag. Bash them till you have small fragments. (It’s acceptable to have big and small pieces)
  • Chop the almonds, then roast them in a heavy pan till they are slightly browned and aromatic.
  • Add the crushed biscuits, almonds, orange peel and ginger bits to the still warm chocolate mixture.
  • Fold in to coat everything well.
  • Tip into a shallow tray lined with a length of greased foil.
  • Use a spatula or knife to smoothen the top as best you can. A bumpy look is fine, it’s Rocky Road after all!
  • Refrigerate for 2-3 hours or until firm enough to cut.
  • Tip out on to a dry chopping board, then peel off the adhering foil.
  • Cut cleanly into bars, using a sharp knife. Store the pieces in a flat box, interspersed with greaseproof paper.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Separation pangs
Simmi Waraich

My husband and I are separating. My husband is rude to me and has confined us in a corner of the house. There is a history of alcohol abuse and though he loves his children, he treats me badly. His parents died so no one can tell him anything. My parents are willing to have me back but I am staying on for my kids. My older son, who is 9 years old, is very irritable and does not listen to me. Am I doing the right thing?

Radhika, Chandigarh

Children can get affected by inter parental conflict. The psychological impact of divorce on children can be short-term related to separation from an attachment figure, loss and change in environment. Long term psychological impact may be there such as a child becoming oppositional and depressed, having academic problems etc. A lot depends on parenting practices and the nature of the relationship between the main parent and children and the relationship of the parents who are separating. A study found that children of divorced parents who were not in conflict with each other had a better outcome.

So, be there for your kids, answer their queries, try and resolve your conflicts with your husband even if you separate or at least don't worsen the conflict. Deal with him calmly and see in which situation there would be least stress. Is living in his house in a corner better than with your parents? Take your kids out to meet friends and for games. Keep their life as normal as possible. Tell them at times two grown ups may have problems but you both love them. Can things still be worked out? If not see how you can separate amicably.

Time also helps. A 10-year-old child whose parents split four years back will adjust better than a child whose parents split a year back.

My son is 23 years old. I worry about him as he is unable to complete projects in time. He stays up late at night and is often irritable in the day. He hardly spends time with us except when he wants something. He is unsure of what he wants to do and often changes his mind. My husband works full time and I am a teacher. We have one child only.

Diljit, Mohali

Often youngsters these days have an extended adolescence (also called emerging adulthood) perhaps because parents in nuclear families are over involved with them. Do understand that youngsters these days face more pressure in life. However, teaching them to follow their own path even if it takes a little extra time can be done only if one has an open house, a non-judgmental attitude. Don't just discuss careers or compare to others. Spend time doing fun stuff, a weekend fun holiday, a time without mobiles and computers, cooking together or playing a game together. That is what a family is meant for and that is what builds a bind that helps youngsters get through tough situations. How you deal with stress also matters.

It's important to give children responsibilities from an early age. Young adults need to know they have to contribute to the family by helping out at home. If he appears confused he can get career counseling. Also, tell him you are there to listen and help out. However, do not tolerate him being rude. Sit with your husband and talk clearly to him of your support plus your expectations. Also stay in touch with his friends and that way you will know what he is thinking. Letting children face some disappointments while growing up without intervening and discussing reasons and options help them to become more mature adults.

Stages of love

Ace designer Narendra Kumar showcased various "stages" of love through his collection on day one of the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort.

Narendra presented his collection for men and women called 'Dark Love' on Wednesday night. A Japanese violinist played soulful music as models took to the runway showing various emotions like happiness, attachment, obsession and violence -through the collection.

It first started with bright blue and yellow that created joy of love, followed by dark green, then moving into the third stage with burgundy and rust and ended the show with black.

The silhouettes for women were jackets, suits, jumpsuits, dresses, embroidered gowns, dresses and peplum jackets and kimono cropped tops.

The men's wear had jackets, double-breasted jackets, embroidered shirt collars, trousers fitting and ending above ankles to match the short jacket silhouette, mid-length coat and sherwani. — PTI

A different track

Popular singer Shreya Ghoshal recently released her ghazal album titled Humnasheen in the presence of an artists like Pandit Jasraj, Hariharan, Talat Aziz, Pankaj Udhas and many others.

Shreya even delighted her guests by rendering three beautiful ghazals from the album. Speaking about why she took such a long time to cut out an album, Shreya said, "Ever since I started singing, I have never had the time to pause and look back. Then when I finally got time, I made Humnasheen."

The ghazals of Humnasheen are strictly of classical flavour and Shreya too fondly looks at it as an attempt to do something which is not exactly commercial. "This album is my way of looking back at my roots which is classical music. The ghazals are an eclectic mix of Urdu and classical music which I think is a great combination. Every day we try to do stuff that is both soulful and commercial. There is always this pressure of making people dance. This time I just wanted to let that pressure go."

Fire scare

A fire broke out at Shilpa Shetty's residence in Juhu, suburban Mumbai on Monday night due to a short circuit. But it was brought under control by the vigilant staff and there was nothing to worry about.

Family outing

Mugdha Godse returned from South Africa after shooting over there for Khatron Ke Khiladi and she has gone off on a holiday to Goa with her family that will fly in from Pune.

Away she goes

After the debacle of Shaadi Ke Side Effects, actress Vidya Balan has gone away to the US. She was spotted at Mumbai's swanky new T2 Terminal and she took in the sights and sounds as fans clicked her pictures.

Radio call

Salman Khan, who is presenting Atul Agnihotri's upcoming next film, O Teri, starring Pulkit Samrat and Bilal Amrohi, recently shot a promotional song for the film.

Salman, who has been constantly connected with the making of the entire film from the beginning, came up with an idea for the special song that he was shooting.

The star Khan was very keen to shoot the song with old radio sets as props as they were just appropriate and matching the whole look on the sets. So, the production team landed up buying all the old radio sets available in Chor Bazaar overnight. The idea came just before shooting the song and so the production team managed to get everything arranged for the song in an overnight visit to the chor bazaar.

The sellers there were more than happy to help the production team with the radio sets when they got to know it was for Salman Khan's shoot."

Kiss & tell

The girl-on-girl kiss is the most attractive trope of the quintessential HORREX (horror and sex) genre. In Ragini MMS-2, the stage is set for a face-off…..errr…. kiss-off, when Sandhya Mridul's character (Monali) is egged on by Rocks (Parvin Dabas) for some girl-on-girl action.

This explains the sensuous kiss between Sunny Leone and Sandhya Mridul in the film. We're told that both were extremely comfortable and professional about paying 'lip service'!

Ragini MMS-2 releases on March 21.

Step up

Nargis Fakhri might do a Hollywood film produced by the Hollywood leg of YRF which is handled by her alleged boyfriend Uday Chopra. The film is a spy comedy that also stars Jason Statham and she will play a sexy agent.

I am glamorous: Kareena

Kareena Kapoor Khan is an absolute natural in front of the camera and she oozes confidence and sex appeal. She knows that she's all that. She talks about it all.

Style statement

Being glamorous is just not about wearing great clothes. It is about personal style, elegance and sophistication and the way you feel. I wake up every morning feeling glamorous and that is just the way I am!

Compulsive shopper

I am a compulsive shopper so my weakness is just that I shop a lot. I don't shop for anything in particular…whatever catches my fancy. I love shoes and I buy many colours in the same style. I share shoes with my sister.

Art mart

I have recently discovered art and I am very impressed with both Thukral and Tagra. I don't think we have any Indian designer who uses so much colour, madness and lots of fun.

Style icon

I really admire the way my mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore dresses and carries herself, my sister Karisma just gets better and more beautiful by the day and I always take her advice. My mother Babita set the tone for the style icons that we both are.

Food wise

I am a complete foodie and I enjoy my healthy food and my junk food. I want to promote a healthy and normal image to my fans. I am a real woman with curves and I love myself the way I am.

Up for the challenge

Yashashri Masurkar is a new entry in Do Dil Bandhe Ek Dori Se. The young actor, who has done a few shows in the past, finds the role of a vamp quite interesting and challenging. Geared up for the new role, she talks to us about her experience.

Tell us about your role in Do Dil...

I play a vamp in the show. My character is playful, grey, at times very negative and much more. It is not only interesting but challenging to do such a role that has lots of scope for performance.

How do you feel about replacing another actor?

I don't have any problem about it. I made sure I spoke to the actor who played the role before me. I know her personally too, so that was fine. I hadn't seen the show previously and yet I am sure she must have done a good job.

How do you look back on your role in Sanskar?

I had a similar role in Sanskar but that negative role had different shades. I enjoyed doing that show too.

How is it shooting with co-star Arhaan Behl?

We haven't shot many scenes yet but he has been really sweet and supportive. He is cooperative and a good actor. It is always wonderful to act opposite an actor who can give a lot to a scene, which is how you improve your performance.

What else is keeping you busy?

I enjoy life. I travel, swim, paint... etc.

Stating the facts

With comedian Kapil Sharma signing a Yashraj film, there are rumours that his hit comedy show Comedy Nights With Kapil might soon end or take a season's break. However Kapil, who is riding high on success, negated all rumours. He tweeted, "Comedy Nights is not going off air..Dont worry.. These r just rumours. I m coz of dis show wtever i m n whrever i m..So js chill.. Love".

Who gets lucky?

Kanchi Kaul, who is quitting her show Meri Bhabhi, will be replaced by another actress. The makers are looking at Manasi Parekh and Shilpa Anand as options. Shilpa Anand hasn't been seen on TV for a long time, so it will be a good change for audiences to see her back.

Sunny side up

Sunny Leone attended the Colors' Holi event recently. She danced with all the boys including Jay Soni and Mrunal Jain but she struck a cord with Madhubala star Gunjan Utreja. Sunny had gone to the event to promote her film Ragini MMS 2.

The truth is different

At a recent party of Life OK's show Kaisa Yeh Ishq Hai…Ajab Sa Risk Hai, which celebrated completion of 200 episodes, actor Suyash Kumar did not mark his present. Rumours circulated that he had quit the show but he clarified that just because he wasn't at the party doesn't mean he is out of the show.

A natural progression

Siddharth Shukla, who became popular with Balika Vadhu and is doing films now, claims he will never leave TV. He feels that he will strive to keep a balance between films and TV.
