Docs boycott OPDs across state
Dehradun, March 6 Addressing the doctors, who gathered at Parade Ground in the morning, the president of PMHS, Dr BS Jangpangi, said the treatment meted out to the medical students would not be tolerated. “Anger and resentment is brewing among the doctors in the entire country against the action of the local administration in Kanpur,” he said. Dr Kuldeep Datta, president of the Indian Medical Association, said that attacks against the doctors have been increasing throughout the country with the administration willing to look the other way. “The administration brutally lathi-charged the students and then registered false cases against the students and a senior teacher of the medical college. We are demanding the arrest of the local politician and the police officials involved in the incident and immediate release of the medical students,” said Datta. Meanwhile, due to the boycott call, the OPDs at both the government and private hospitals throughout the state did not function leaving hundreds of patients in the lurch. However, the emergency services continued to function at the three government hospitals. But patients coming from far-off places with prior appointments had to leave disappointed and wait for tomorrow for consultation. Dr RS Aswal, PMS of Doon Hospital, said that the doctors had been instructed to discharge their emergency medical duties and all the patients are being treated on priority basis. |

Traders back anti-polythene drive
to keep Haridwar, Ganga clean
Haridwar, March 6 To make city polythene free, a section of traders has resorted to taking the pledge not to sell, buy or give goods in polythene material as banned by the government. The pledge was taken at the sanctum sanctorum of Braham Kund, Har-ki-Pauri, with traders offering rituals at the holy Ganga river. Traders also assured the district administration of their cooperation in this regard to make the city polythene free. Youth trader division district president Sandeep Sharma said that in recent years usage of polythene had increased, which is affecting the clean environment of the pilgrim city. As a law abiding citizen they thought it better to take the initiative from their side first and then urge local public and consumers, pilgrims, tourists to do the same. City president of the unit Sunil Rathi said that local public, pilgrims and tourists are putting polythene directly or indirectly into the holy river Ganga, which needs to be stopped. This is making the holy Ganga river polluted. ''We need to make sure we don't use or buy polythene any more as it is not bio-degradable,'' said Rathi. The appeal was made by the trader fraternity to the state government, district administration and retailers of jute-cloth bag merchants to make available such eco friendly bags. Notably, in the past few years the district administration, Akhil Bharatiya Gayatri Parivar Shantikunj, Patanjali Yogpeeth and several other religious-social organisations had taken out an anti-polythene drive, but after some days the drive did not have much impact. The district administration had even resorted to penalty on traders, who were using polythene material bags, but after stiff resistance from the trader community, they were given additional time, but after change of the DM, the prohibition became ineffective. Now,with traders themselves coming forward, it is time that the district administration, too, prohibits usage of polythene in the pilgrim city. |

Hectic activity on for LS poll ticket from Kumaon
Pithoragarh, March 6 “We have decided to contest the elections as we have the responsibility of preserving the identity of local communities, which is being harmed due to the activities of the mainstream political parties,” said KS Airy, leader of the UKD. Though the BJP and the Congress are witnessing hectic activities of the supporters of various prospective candidates, the two parties are likely to give ticket to the sitting MPs from the Almora and Nainital seats. “I do not see any challenge from the BJP in Almora if I am given the responsibility to ensure victory for the Congress,” said Pradeep Tamta, Congress MP from Almora, who is a strong candidate to get the party ticket from the seat this time as well. The BJP is considering three candidates, namely Ajay Tamta, former IAS officer Chanar Ram and Rekha Arya, for the Almora seat and the central party leadership is expected to take the final call by March 8. “As Chanar Ram is holding party posts, the party is likely to field either last time runner up and former state minister Ajay Tamta or Rekha Arya from the Almora seat,” said a party general secretary. While the UKD is yet to finalise its candidate, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already announced Harish Chandra Arya as its candidate from the Almora seat. “We are fighting against corruption-ridden politics of the mainstream parties. Our presence will ensure that the basic issues of the people of the hill state are given precedence, which the mainstream parties have deliberately forgotten,” said Dr Shamsher Singh Bisht, coordinator of the campaign committee of the AAP in the state. From the Nainital seat, while the Congress is likely to give ticket to its sitting MP, the BJP is banking on former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari this time. “The central party leadership in New Delhi believes there is a Koshiyari wave in the Nainital seat like the Narendra Modi wave across the country,” said a BJP leader. While the AAP is in the process of finalising the candidate for Nainital, the BSP and the Samajwadi Party (SP) are finding it difficult to field suitable candidates from the seat. “We have decided to field a candidate in Nainital who understands the importance of local issues and is willing to struggle for the cause of local people after the Lok Sabha elections,” said
Bisht. |
