Speaking out

The incident in which a teacher of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Phase 3B1, Mohali, was assaulted by his students over wrong parking on the school premises has sparked off a debate over the falling values among today's youth. Tribune correspondents Akash Ghai and Aarti Kapur spoke to teachers and students to get their point of view.

"Nowadays, students have become more aggressive. Basic ethics and moral values are decreasing day by day. Earlier, teachers were regarded as 'gurus' but that is not the case today." — Prineet Sohal, Vice-principal, Shemrock school

"Today, most youngsters don't have much regard for their teachers. But it is not the case with every student. Still there are students who love and respect their teachers a lot. The assault on a teacher by his students is a matter of shame for all of us."— Nitika, class X student

"Why do we always react after such incidents have taken place rather than taking a concrete action to avoid such happenings?" — Bhushan rohta, Dept of Gandhian & Peace Studies, PU

"With commercialisation of education, the teacher-student relationship has been badly affected. Such incidents are a sign that we are not giving our wards the right values and guidance. The parents should avoid pampering their children with luxuries." — Vog raj angrish, asst prof, Dept of Punjabi, Panjab University

"The bond between teacher and pupils is definitely missing. Today, teachers are concerned about teaching only and the love and the care that they shared with students has gone into oblivion. In my viewpoint, only love and affection can prevent such unfortunate incidents." — karanbir singh, student

"The incident is surely shocking but it is not a rare case. The understanding between teachers, parents and children has to be strengthened to pave the way for a brighter tomorrow." — Ritika singh, educationist
