Moving beyond fear
Actor Jimmy Shergill has taken slow but sure steps in tinsel town. In Chandigarh to promote his upcoming Daar@The Mall, his sole aim is to entertain…
Ashima Batish

Usually it is the other way round. Once an actor has been-there-done-that with romance, comedy and action, the natural progression is to essay roles that are intense. Roles that promise to re-introduce a star as an actor who can easily slip into the skin of a given character. Since Jimmy Shergill has his career move in a reverse gear, he desperately wants to dance around the trees with heroines, test his comic timing and kick hard enough to blow away a dozen men!

He wants to do what Bollywood does best — entertain. “I think I have done ample serious roles, it’s time for an image makeover,” says the actor, who was at Cleopatra in Chandigarh on Thursday to promote his next film Daar@The Mall.

This film doesn’t fit in the ‘bracket’ of what he really wants to do, but will have him play a solo lead after a very long time. “Playing the lead or getting a substantial part in an ensemble cast doesn’t matter. I have got my due in the industry and people have generously complimented him.” In the film, he plays the role of a security officer at a mall that is haunted and where people go missing. Jimmy adds that it was the promising script that lured him to take up the role.

The history of horror films in India goes back to the times when the genre was spiced up with porn, something that Miss Lovely was all about. The report card of the last so many years doesn’t boast of many box-office hits except for a few like Raaz, Haunted or Darna Mana Hai. Aware of the poor track record, occasionally lifted up by a few projects of Ram Gopal Varma and Vikram Bhatt, Jimmy hopes the film will give a facelift to the genre. “You won’t laugh looking at the ghost; it doesn’t run around chasing its targets. The film has been given ‘A’ certificate only for its fear factor.”

Coming to his contribution to the Punjabi film industry, he will soon start shooting for a Manmohan Singh’s venture, which is touted as the sequel to Munde UK De. He agrees that the film industry here is giving importance to quantity than quality, but that, he says, is just a passing phase. “Some intelligent films are being made and different subjects have been picked. The industry will consolidate its gains and losses to come up with better films.” As of now, he is happy to promote Darr and hopes iske aage jeet hai! Ask him what he fears the most and he gives a candid reply, “My biggest fear is that of losing loved ones.” Can the answer be any better than this?

Well groomed

A metrosexual, he feels that grooming is very important, especially when you are a part of showbiz. He looked suave and stylish in a casual jacket and denims, paired with aviators. This is his second visit to Cleopatra after having come here for the promotion of Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster, “Men must look groomed. It’s not about style but basic personality.”

Good friends

He cherishes his friendship with Tigmanshu Dhulia, a director he has made many successful films with. “We have been able to deliver hits together because we share a bond; we know each other and our abilities well. He knows how to utilise the actor in me and understands what he wants from me as a director.” Tigmanshu is writing the script for his next film and Jimmy hopes he will get a part.

Sky high
Pakistani singer Falak Shabir sees stark similarities between the two nations. He has moved across the border to delight music lovers …
Manpriya Singh

It might not be true on the political spectrum, but anyone with artistic credentials has never felt the difference between two nations. Falak Shabir, the latest signing sensation from the neighbouring state, Pakistan, arrives to open arms and devoted listeners. He pours his heart out and sums up his emotions with a disarming, “I’m at home here. So much so that I don’t feel the difference since everything is the same - the Punjabi language, the people and their hospitality.”

It was only a matter of crooning the hit single Ijazat (Sanu bhul na jawin) and he took the youngsters as well as the online community by storm. The reciprocation of love and gratitude goes beyond lip service. “In Lahore we have a music store where people from any bus coming from India, and especially the Punjabi community travelling in there, is offered everything at half the price; even if that means putting in money yourself.” He adds, “I didn’t know what Pani Puri was; when I went to Mumbai I told the guys that it was like our Gol Gappas — he didn’t even take money from me.”

Surging ahead

Even before music could professionally happen, the love happened at an early age! “I was in class 7 when I decided to make it my profession.” It’s been a journey that charts ups and downs, including a business of T-shirts and guitars run by the label Falak Shabir. “I financed my first album myself, including everything else that it took to pursue singing professionally.” Since the debut album Rog in 2008, there’s been no looking back, right till the latest album Judah. “It has 13 songs and all of them have been sung, written and composed by me.”

It could be a sibling going abroad, a girl whose break-up he witnessed himself, it could be anything. When self-experienced emotions play an inspiration, lyrics come effortlessly. “That’s one of the reasons I like to write my songs.” If music were not an all-encompassing endeavour, there is something else too he is good at. “I’m really good at comedy. When sitting with friends we have a lot of fun.” That’s where he pulls the stops and acting is not on the cards. “I recently received an offer for a Punjabi film. But acting is not on the agenda at all. I am so busy with singing and composing that there is just no time.” He adds, “I feel I have a long way to go and don’t want to shift my focus.”

Coming up are half-a-dozen Bollywood projects. “You know how it is with Bollywood, they record and register a song years ago and later when they make a film they come out with the song.”

Accordingly, the song Mera Mann from Nautanki Saala, Saajans from I, Me Aur Main happened years ago. “You should soon hear Judaai from the film I love New York,” he shares hours before his performance in Chandigarh. There are a couple of concerts in Delhi the next day. What makes things perfect is the fact that it’s a home away from home. “This is like Lahore for me. I don’t feel the difference.”

Harman’s career graph

Harman Baweja will be seen in an all new avatar in Dishkiyaaoon. He talks about his family, the kind of person he is, dating Bipasha Basu and more.

Getting into films

I have always been obsessed with the hospitality industry. I am a big foodie and hospitality was a fascination. I thought I would start a hotel and so, after my 10th standard, I decided to go to Switzerland to study hotel management. That was the first time I had travelled out of India. But I wasn't enjoying it. So, when I came for my break after one year here, I told my mom that I didn't want to go back. I was scared what dad would say. But I was surprised when I told him and he said, 'Don't go back. Do what you want to do in life. Go and get your transfer certificate back.' I, of course, had packed up already from there and got back my TC. At that age, I found it really hard to stay away from my family and didn't enjoy studying about 112 types of glasses. I then went to UCLA to do my theatre. After finishing the course, I assisted my dad on Deewane in which Ajay Devgn had a double role. I then produced a film at 21 after which I decided that I wanted to act. My father produced and directed my first film as an actor, Love Story 2050.

Dealing with failure

When I started, the hype and hoopla just happened. Thankfully, I come from a film background where I have seen my dad's successes and failures. My dad had luckily hedged out in Love Story 2050, so, he didn't lose money. But he had put in three years of his life in it. It was a family effort and so, there was no supper on the dinner table. Everybody was down. I also took a wrong decision to not sign anything until What's Your Raashee? was complete. But that film too did not work and everything came to a halt. I once met Anil Kapoor in an elevator. He said, 'How are you? You are looking good' and then said, 'Yaar Harman, you should do a Hindi film. You have done some science fiction, some cricket film with 12 girls, do a normal film.' I realised he was right. And I decided to do a commercial Hindi film Dishkiyaaoon.

Dear sister

I am attached to my sister Rowena. She understands me. Our parents have brought us up as one unit, so we are very close. Till the age of 15, we shared our bunker bed that used to be in the kitchen as we lived in a one-bedroom hall. We would watch TV through the slit in the door. She pretty much knows everything that is happening in my life.

The real me

I live in an American time zone. I love my space at night when there are no distractions or noises around. My mum has now come to the terms with it, but she still complains of my excess coffee intake. Also, I just don't enjoy going to the gym and love eating. Fortunately, I am blessed with a good natural metabolic rate, so I am fit. But I can finish two large cheese-burst pizzas on my own. One of my friends owns a cafe called Sundance Cafe where, if you finish this huge burger, they will give you Rs10,000. I am among the few who have won the money. My dad, when he is sitting on the dining table, is very proper. He will speak correctly and not even put his elbow on the table. His shirt will always be crisp. I, on the other hand, don't iron my clothes. I put on whatever I have, put a little water and leave it to dry up itself. My mum keeps telling me, "Why are you wearing wet clothes?" I tell her, "Don't stress. Why do I have to iron them? They will dry up in the car by the time I reach."

Knowing Bipasha

Yes. We knew of each other, but had never ever interacted until we met for the first time at Amitabh Bachchan's 70th birthday bash. It's natural to find her attractive. There are a lot of attractive people in the industry, but no one as attractive as her. We just hit it off and ended up talking a little more than we should be and we are still talking. Barring the fitness factor, we are very similar. She is a simple, straightforward and honest girl who is caring and loving. She has great energy, spiritually and realistically. She, too, is a foodie like me.

Circus girl
Nargis Fakhri is going to shoot an ad campaign in a circus in London and has to do some stunts. So she will train in London and is doing Pilates over here to prepare for the shoot.

Dressing up spaces offers a lucrative career today. Fashion certainly has moved beyond clothes and entered homes, offices and malls. Interior designing is becoming a sought-after profession, and to help you establish the ground there, INIFD Academy of Interiors has come into place. Launched on Thursday, the academy has found a celeb mentor in Twinkle Khanna. "With spaces squeezing and people conscious of the décor, be it home or office, interior design is in demand. With our 20 years of successful run with fashion, this academy will offer specialised training in the field," says Ritu Kochhar, corporate director, INIFD.

The programme will have a sound academic curriculum with focus on practical, informed Aditi Srivastava, president, INIFD Corporate. Twinkle Khanna, the celeb wife, who has forayed into interior design with her chain, The White Window, and won awards in the field, would be holding interactions with the students. Her designed modules would be part of every student's training at the academy.

Along with Chandigarh, INIFD Academy of Interiors is now open in 50 centres across the country. "The talent is not rested in metros alone. We want students from smaller towns also to unleash their creativity and realise their dreams," says Aditi. Apart from Twinkle Khanna, there would be other famous mentors like Massimo Ottone, head of CIA International, Italy; Sandeep Kochhar, Vastu expert; Wasim Khan, leading interior designer and Tarak Shah, India head, Minotti, Italian furniture chain.

"The idea is to expose students to the very best in the field," says Ritu.

The academy will offer certificate courses, diplomas and undergraduate courses. "The fee is going to be very reasonable but quality of the course the very best in the field," assures Anju Sharma, academic head, INIFD.

The courses will begin from March.

Juhi dons negative avatar

The film Gulaab Gang had been making news since its inception. A lot of curiosity surrounded the fact that both Nadhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla will be appearing in the film. Though the two are contemporaries, they have never done a film together till now.

But, since Juhi is to portray a negative role, the actress felt that there is no scope of competition and she decided to do the role. "I would say that earlier there were a few chances when we could have worked together, but at that time I didn't do the film because Madhuri was there in the films. I thought if she is there, then what would I do? Comparisons were bound to happen, so to avoid all that tension, I didn't do those films," said Juhi. However, now she is not worried. "I am so glad that I am playing a villain in the film. So, you can't compare the two of us. I neither had to dance nor sing. All that has been done by Madhuri," she said.

Now, the first poster featuring Juhi is out and it has really proven to be scary. It is rather frightening to see the evil grin on the lovely face of a woman whom the audience is accustomed to seeing in happy and bubbly characters. The poster shows Juhi striking a commanding pose on a politician's throne with a rather meaningful half smile. The actress plays the role of a nefarious politician named Sumitra Devi. This is a completely new type of role for Juhi. Talking about Juhi's role in the film, Madhuri said, "I am happy we worked together in this film. I don't regret about not working in the past. I hope to work with her again. I don't think one should compare us or talk about comparison as we are playing two different roles in the film. I am the hero, she is the villian... These two characters would be nothing without each other. I think we have got the best energy for this film." "She plays a sweet villain in the film... It is scary in a way. It is a very different role for her and I liked watching her on screen. It was wonderful working with her," added Madhuri.

Imtiaz collaborates with Sajid

Imtiaz Ali gears up for his upcoming release on February 21, Highway. This project marks the debut of another professional pairing—Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Nadiadwala.

This is the first time the duo has come together to work on a project. Sajid Nadiadwala, who has worked with the biggest stars like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar will be seen investing in a lot of young talent this year.

Imtiaz says, "I had a certain confidence (in Sajid's work). The kind of films he's done in the past, like Ghulami (1985)—one of my favourite films - are the kind of movies I'm making. That is what I think has interested him in Highway. I'm a director and he's (Sajid) a producer; the influence we had on each other is that now I've turned producer and he's turned director. I'm taking guidance from him."

Sajid Nadiadwala is not just excited about his first project with Imtiaz but he also hopes that the pairing continues for a really long time.

Sajid says, "The best thing about Imtiaz is that I get ideas from him free of cost… I've discussed scenes with him from a film he's not even associated with. I've been a producer for 25 years, but as director, I'm a newcomer. The most important thing for me was to be part of the journey. I never comment on how the film is, but I'd say I'm happy with the outcome."

The trailer and songs of Highway have been loved by the audiences. Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Nadiadwala will also collaborate again on a movie starring Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor.

Products on display at India Design 2014 ranged from bedroom wardrobes and kitchens.

Last weekend, Pepperfry.com, organised a prestigious interior design show featuring Delhi's finest luxury brands — India Design 2014.

Located at the NSIC grounds in Okhla, New Delhi, the exhibition was a unique one. We were welcomed by a fully carpeted open air concourse dotted with pagoda styled marquees and quaint food stalls with their not to be missed designer seating. Situated on its right, were the three main tented halls showcasing the best in furniture and home decor.

The standard and creativity of these temporary exhibition stalls were very impressive indeed. The imagination injected easily transformed the humble stall to a stage set for visual niceness. Elegance filled the atmosphere, emanating from the exhibitors and their wares and those attending the show. Female interior designers were easily identified with their high boots and coordinated attire while the gentlemen were dressed in their smart designer casuals.

The quality, standard, design, material and finishing has ushered a whole new level and the pricing clearly reflected this. Products on display ranged from bedroom wardrobes, kitchens and appliances, mirrors, wall panels, soft furnishings, planters, lighting, exquisite hard wood flooring, large sculptural installations and of course, soft furnishings, furniture and accessories. Noted brands such as Charcoal Project, Apartment 9, InV Home, Klove, Shades of India, Alchemy, The Pure Concept and Zolijn were just some of the local brands present as well as international brands Natuzzi, Fisher and Paykel and Poltrona Frau.

GET PHYSICAL
Take care of triceps
Vishal Thukral

Many chest exercises also involve triceps. This means chest and triceps exercises may be performed during the same workout or with sufficient recuperation time in between. Training of chest and triceps on the consecutive days should be avoided because it will make the triceps overworked. Discussed below are a few exercises for chest and triceps.

Chest exercises

Dumbell flies: Grasp two dumbbells. Lie on a bench. Support dumbbells above the chest with arms fixed in slightly bent position. Internally rotate shoulders so elbows point out to sides. Lower the dumbbells to the sides until the chest muscles are stretched with elbows fixed in slightly bent position. Bring the dumbbells together in a hugging motion until the dumbbells are nearly together. Keep the shoulders internally rotated so elbows point downward at bottom position and outward at top position. Do it 10-12 reps, 3 to 4 sets.

Dumbell chest press: Lie on the bench with a dumbbell in each hand and feet flat on the floor. Push the dumbbells up so that your arms are directly over your shoulders and your palms are up. Pull your abdominals in, and tilt your chin toward your chest. Lower the dumbbells down and a little to the side until your elbows are slightly below your shoulders. Roll your shoulder blades back and down, like you're pinching them together and accentuating your chest. Push the weights back, taking care not to lock your elbows or allow your shoulder blades to rise off the bench. Do it 10-12 reps. 3 to 4 sets.

Push ups: Lie prone on the floor with hands slightly wider than shoulder width.

Raise your body off the floor by extending your arms. Keeping body straight, lower your body to the floor by bending your arms. Push your body up until arms are extended. Do it 15-20 reps.3 to 4 sets.

Tri-cep exercises

One arm tri-cep extension: To begin, stand up with a dumbbell held in one hand. Feet should be about shoulder width apart from each other. Now fully extend the arm with the dumbbell over your head. The small finger of your hand should be facing the ceiling and the palm of your hand should be facing forward.

The dumbbell should be above your head. This will be starting position. Keeping upper arm close to your head (elbows in) and perpendicular to the floor, lower the resistance in a semicircular motion behind your head until your forearm touch your bicep. The upper arm should remain stationary and only the forearm should move. Go back to the starting position by using the triceps to raise the dumbbell. Do it 10- 12 reps, 3 to 4 sets. Switch arms and repeat the exercise.

Overhead tri-cep extension: Position one dumbbell overhead with both hands under the inner plate (heart-shaped grip). With elbows overhead, lower forearm behind upper arm by flexing elbows. Flex wrists at bottom to avoid hitting dumbbell on the back of neck. Raise the dumbbell overhead by extending elbows while hyper extending wrists. Return and repeat. Do it 10-12 reps, 3 to 4 sets.

Dips: Sit on a bench or chair. Begin with the hands next to or slightly under the hips. Lift up the hands and bring the hips forward. Bend the elbows (no lower than 90 degrees) and lower the hips down, keeping them very close to the chair. Keep the shoulders down. Push back up without locking the elbows and repeat for 10-12 reps, 3 to 4 sets.
