HC accepts plea against liquor vends in green belts

Mohali, February 20
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today allowed an application by former Mohali Municipal Councillor Kuljeet Singh Bedi against the use of green belts for liquor vends in the town.

The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Arun Palli, said in its order relating to the case Kuljeet Singh Bedi, petitioner, vs the State of Punjab and others, that in view of the averments contained in the application, the “same is allowed and the writ petition is taken on board.”

It said the counsel for the petitioner in the PIL makes a grievance qua the use of green belt for liquor vends in Mohali city.

He concedes that the larger issue of policy formulation was already pending before the court in another petition which was now listed on March 18, 2014, where Punjab had been told to place on record in advance their proposed liquor policy from April 1, 2014. He, thus, submits that the aspect urged by him in the petition may also be examined while framing the policy.

The petition was disposed of in the aforesaid terms.

It was listed for compliance on March 18. Notice in the matter was accepted by Additional Advocate-General Harsimran S Sethi.

Accused’s remand extended

The Panchkula court today extended the police remand of two Nigerians, Goodluck Boro and Chopper Boro, for four days here today in the online lottery scam.

Their third accomplice Ram Tirtho has been sent to judicial custody.

The Panchkula police claimed that they had gathered vital information about their network that had been spread across several countries of the African subcontinent.

“We got to know that they also used the names of certain top international brands to trap victims”, said the police. They said vital data had been extracted from laptops and pen drives recovered at the behest of the accused.

“The data was deleted from the laptops but our experts managed to retrieve it. We are going through the same. More arrests are possible in the case,” the police added.

Girl, boy thrashed by three youths at Daddu Majra

Chandigarh, February 20
High drama was witnessed at a house in Mani Majra today when three youths barged into the house of a girl in Daddu Majra Colony and thrashed her and her boyfriend with sticks in the presence of the mother and siblings.

The injured, Anil Sharma of Sector 41 and the girl were rushed to GMSH-16 and Anil was discharged after getting treatment. The main assailant, Praveen Kumar of Sector 23, and two others are absconding. Earlier, Praveen has been involved in two cases. Police sources said Praveen was friendly with the girl but later became estranged when she became close to Anil. So he attacked them.

DAV schools to clash in final

DAV Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, will face DAV Public Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, in the final match of Inter-District Cricket Cup for Coca Cola Trophy of boys (U-16), at Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium, Mohali, tomorrow.

In the first semi-final played today, DAV Senior Secondary School defeated Netaji Model School, Ropar, by 102 runs. An even bowling and batting output helped the team to register an easy win. Earlier, batting first the local team posted 189-runs in 43.3 overs (all out). Jagdeep (41 runs) and Tavleen (38 runs) guided the team to achieve the total. For Netaji Model School, Shivansh and Naresham took three and two wickets, respectively.

Chasing the target, batsmen of Netaji Model School failed to face the bowling attack and handed off their innings on a mere total of 87 runs in 31.1 overs. Local bowler, Rahul did some early damages and took a five-wicket haul while Aman and Jagdeep claimed took two wickets each to win the match. For batting side, Navpreet (31 runs) remained the top scorer.

In the second semi-final match, DAV Public Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, beat City Public School, Jalandhar, by 7 wickets. The latter was bundled out on a mere total of 76-runs. Amritsar’s Piyush hogged the limelight claiming 4 wickets whereas Rohit claimed three wickets. Azam Nazir was the highest scorer for Jalandhar team with his 21-runs contribution. In reply, Amritsar team achieved the target with Sumit Sharma (23-runs) and Rahul (18-runs) scoring a lion’s share. For Jalandhar, Simran Pal claimed two wickets.

PUSC wants players’ diet money increased

Coming Saturday, the Syndicate meeting at Panjab University (PU) may bring some good news for PU players and officials.

Purposing hike in players’ diet money and officials’ match duty fees, the Executive Committee of Panjab University Sports Council (PUSC) and Directorate of Sports had asked for approval of proposed rules from Syndicate, and later from the senate.

The Syndicate meeting is scheduled to be held on February 22 (Saturday).

The PUSC, besides demanding major hike at par like with the other universities, demanded approval for changing rules of games like cricket (B division). The committee had approved to conduct the Panjab University inter-college cricket championship of Men (B -division) of 20 overs instead of organising it for 25 overs. Also, the final and hard-line position matches will be played under 50 overs format. The committee also approved hike in TA/DA of the various committee members as at par with the executive members of PUSC.

It has been also recommended, for approval, that any team willing to lodge protest can lodge it, on the same day of the tournament. And it should be confirmed by the principal of the college concerned, within seven days, after the completion of that particular tournament. Earlier, the protest was allowed to be lodged within 4 days of the tournament by the principal of the college concerned. It also approved to provide officiating charges to the officials in case of postponement of any inter-college match. The committee has approved the enhancement of 10 per cent in sports fee as well as sports development fees form the next session.

Other decisions proposed by general body of PUSC — for approval of Syndicate — are grant of Rs 200, per head per day, to the weighing-in officials invited during the PU Inter-college tournaments of Judo (men and women), best physique (men), weight lifting (men and women), power lifting (men and women), boxing (men and women), wrestling (men and women), tae kwon do (men and women).

Proposals

* To pay remuneration of Rs 500 to driver of rescue boat

* Increase the officiating charges from Rs 200 to Rs 400 to the officials of inter- college tennis championship.

* Increase the remuneration from Rs 200 to Rs 400 to loaders during the inter- college powerlifting and weightlifting tournament

* Rs 800 per day for the committee members for conducting inter-university championship

Enhancement for players

* DA to the players during inter-university coaching camps held in Chandigarh or outside.

Existing- Rs 175 (per head per day)

Proposed - Rs 200 (per head per day)

* DA to the players accompanying the Panjab University teams for inter-university competitions

Existing- Rs 190 (per head per day)

Proposed - Rs 300 (per head per day)

during inter-university competitions

* DA to officials (coaches and manager) during the inter-university competitions

Existing- Rs 250 (per head per day)

Proposed - Rs 500 (per head per day)

* Refreshment charges to players during inter-university tournaments

Existing- Rs 20 (per head per day)

Proposed - Rs 50 (per head per day)

* Travelling expenses to officials accompanying teams for inter university competitions

Existing- Sleeper class

Proposed - III Tier AC or AC chair car in all trains or bus fare of deluxe buses.

* Incidental charges to officials who accompany teams for inter-university matches

Single fare of III tier AC Shatabdi or single bus fare equal to Volvo whichever is less.

Air Force Club clinch trophy

Cagers of Air Force Club lifted the trophy of Senior State Basketball Championship for Men, concluded at the New Public School, Sector 18, here today. In the final league match, the Air Force Club beat SGGS Club, Sector 26, 84-51.For winning side Rohit pumped in 26 points while for losing side’s Pritpal reduced the margin with 12 points. In the final match of women, GGS Club defeated PGGC-11 62-48 with Kirti scoring 26 points. In the men’s category, PUC club and Jugraj coaching centre attained second and third places, respectively, whereas the team of PGGC club and MCM club secured second and third place, in women’s category, respectively.

Results

Men: Air Force Club beat SGGS-26 84-51; PUC Club beat Jugraj Coaching Centre 101-84.

Women: GGSC Club beat PGGC 11 62-48; MCM Club 36 beat Dev Samaj B.Ed College Club 36 34-24.

The 58th Annual Athletics Meet of Post-Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, was organised at the college grounds, here today. Padamshree Pargat Singh, hockey olympian and MLA, Jalandhar Cantt. distributed the prizes among the winners. Sukhjinder Kaur of B.A-IInd year was adjudged as the best athlete whereas Mamta of BCA-III was declared as all round best player of the year.
