Murder accused arrested

Dera Bassi, February 8
The police have arrested a murder accused and recovered Rs 8 lakh from him. Addressing a press conference, SSP Indermohan Singh Bhatti a police team led by SHO Gurjeet Singh arrested Rashpal Singh near Bhikhiwind in Tarn Taran district.

The accused, Rashpal Singh, alias Bholu, a resident of Dyalpura village in Tarn Taran, was accused of murdering Mohammad Nafis, an employee with a contractor of a meat plant. He was found murdered in his house on January 29.

The SSP stated that the accused had confessed to the crime. Rashpal Singh said he killed Mohammed Nafis over a financial dispute. After the incident, the accused fled with the victim's Alto car and Rs 26 lakh. The accused has been remanded to two-day police custody.

Police conduct raids to arrest the remaining accused in rape case

Mohali, February 8
The police are conducting raids to arrest three more accused, including the master mind, in the case of the abduction and rape of two students of a nursing institute near Kurali. SSP Indermohan Singh said the main accused in the case is still at large.

The investigating officer, ASI Jarnail Singh, said raids were being conducted by the police to catch hold of the main suspects, Devinder Singh Lali, Burny and Parambir Singh, alias Pamma. He said the police have already arrested three accused in the case, identified as Palwinder Singh, alias Gulu, Talwinder Singh, alias Bhuchhar, and Gurpreet Singh, alias Ganju.

The investigating officer said all the six accused had allegedly drawn up a plan on January 26 to abduct students of the institute. Palwinder Singh’s Alto car was used in the crime. He said on January 27 Burny, Lali and Gulu allegedly abducted the two girls while they were on their way to the institute. At the time of the abduction the victims were threatened with a rifle and were forced to keep mum. The other three accused followed them on a motor cycle. The ASI said the two nursing students were kept for a day at a farm near Manakpur Sharif village, where they were allegedly raped. The victims were released by the accused on January 28 around 4 pm.

The girls were dropped on a motor cycle near Kubaheri village.

GKSM Government College, Tanda Urmar, Hoshiarpur, lifted the winning trophy of the Panjab University Inter-College Gatka Tournament for Men at the gymnasium hall of Panjab University, here today. The winning team scored a total of 13 points in the tournament.

LLR Government College, Dhudike, Moga, were the runner-up (8 points), while SGGS College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, stood third with 8 points.

Shuttlers Rajiv, Pankaj log win

Duo of Rajiv Mahajan and Pankaj Mittal won the finals of +35 doubles category for the fourth consecutive time during the Chandigarh State Masters Badminton Championship today.

The championship was being played at the badminton courts of Sector 42, Sports Complex.

In the singles category of the championship, Geeta Goel (FCI) and Deepak Saxena (AG) won singles’ title of women and men (+35 age) category, respectively.

3 BRD lift weightlifting trophy

Chandigarh, February 8
The 3-Base Repair Depot (BRD) Air Force Station won the champions’ trophy of the 57th Inter-Services Weightlifting Championship. The host side won the winning trophy by claiming 24 medals.

The medals include 12 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 4 bronze medals.

Wing Commander Deepak Ahluwalia, Officer in charge, Nodal Centre, 3 BRD Air Force Station, congratulated the winners.

At present, the Air Force team has a national record and five services records in its favour.
