Man attempts to hurt lawyer:
Sahib Singh allegedly attempted to hurt senior advocate Manju Pandey in the district court complex at Sriganganagar on Thursday. He was later nabbed by some lawyers and their staff and handed over to the police. A case has been registered. Sources said Sahib Singh walked to Pandey's chamber, pointed a pistol at her head and pressed the trigger. However, the gun "did not function".

Machiwara
Nine injured in mishap:
Nine persons, including two women, were injured when two vehicles collided head-on, near Garhi Bridge on Samrala-Machiwara road on Friday. Among those who got injured are Sandeep Singh of Bhanglan, Harnek Singh of Herian, Harjiwan Singh of Herian, Sarabjit Singh, Sandeep Kumar, Satya Devi, Ramesh Kumar and Manjit Kaur, all residents of Satyana village. Machiwara SHO Amardeep Singh said investigation was on.

PRTC pensioners protest:
Punjab Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) pensioners protested outside the Patiala depot on Friday. They alleged their pension had not been paid for the past two months. PRTC Pensioners Association president Bhagwant Singh threatened to hold a massive protest rally at the local bus stand on February 12.

Man dies in accident:
Lakha Singh (45) of Sarli Kalan village died on the spot when he was hit by a motorcycle at Nagoke crossing, 30 kilometres from here, on Friday. The victim was hit when he was crossing the road. The accused fled the spot.

Website launched: Paramjit Singh, District Education Officer (Secondary Education), on Thursday launched the departmental website -- www.deotrnse.com -- of the district office here.

Two booked in dowry case: The husband and mother-in-law of a dowry victim have been booked under Sections 498A, 406 IPC by the Patti police. The accused have been identified as Saurav Kumar and his mother Bimla Rani, residents of Mussapur, Jalandhar. A case has been registered on the complaint of Gurnam Singh, resident of Sabhra village, 45 km from here. His daughter Kuldeep Kaur had married Saurav a year ago. The police have registered a case after preliminary investigation.

Man booked for rape:
A resident of Colony No. 4 allegedly raped a 39-year-old mentally ill woman at a construction site in Industrial Area, Phase I, on Thursday. The police said the victim was sitting alongside a road when the accused, identified as Sudan, made advances to her. Om Prakash, a security guard, who was passing by, raised the alarm. The accused fled. The medical examination of the victim has confirmed rape. A case has been registered. The police said the accused, who was arrested on a charge of theft recently.
