Kiwis leave India shell-shocked
Wellington, January 31 Going into the match trailing 0-3 in the five-match series, the famed India batting came a cropper once again, bundled out for 216 in 49.4 overs by New Zealand, while chasing 304. Virat Kohli's 82 was the only saving grace as the visitors failed to put up a fight against the Kiwi bowlers, led superbly by debutant Matt Henry (4/38). Earlier, Ross Taylor slammed his second successive hundred to power the hosts to an imposing 303 for five. Put into bat, Taylor (102) shared a 152-run partnership with Kane Williamson (88), who scored his fifth consecutive half-century, for the third wicket to rescue New Zealand from a precarious 41-2 at one stage. Taylor's 106-ball innings was studded with 10 hits to the fence and one six, while Williamson blasted eight fours and one six in his 91-ball innings here. For India, Varun Aaron (2-60) was the most successful bowler, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1-48) and Mohammad Shami (1-61) provided decent support. Virat Kohli took the only other wicket to fall, while the spinners, R Ashwin (0-37) and Ravindra Jadeja (0-54) went wicket-less. Chasing 304 runs for their first win on the tour, the Men in Blue got off to a disastrously slow start as they needed six overs to get to a double-digit score, losing a wicket in the interim. Rohit Sharma (4) was the first to go, giving slip-catching practice to Taylor in the 5th over bowled by Kyle Mills (2-35). Shikhar Dhawan (9), coming back into the eleven after spending the last match on sidelines, also looked uncomfortable as Henry finally get rid off him, taking this first international wicket. Four over later, with the score at 30/2, Ajinkya Rahane (2) missed a straight delivery from Henry, trying to play it off his legs and was out plumb LBW. India were staring at another massive defeat even as Kohli put up some resistance and finally he found some support in Ambati Rayudu. The latter took his time getting set, hitting two fours off the 40 balls he faced, but he couldn't get past 20 runs. This was a serious blow for India, as the two batsmen had added 48 runs 64 balls, at a decent run-rate of 4.5 per over. Yet again, India were left relying on Dhoni and Kohli and the duo tried hard, putting up 67 runs for the fifth wicket in 61 balls, stirring some hope for their hapless team. In the 30th over of the innings, Kohli brought up his 30th ODI fifty. Immediately thereafter, with the run-rate now climbing past 10-per-over, he decided to play big shots and found some success. But he fell in the process, caught at long-on by substitute Peter Young-Husband off Nathan McCullum (1-33) in the 37th over. He scored 82 runs off 78 balls, with seven fours and three sixes. There after, it was another slow procession for the lower-order batsmen as R Ashwin (7) and Ravindra Jadeja (5) failed to provide support to Dhoni. After sometime, Dhoni too perished, caught at long-off trying to clear the ropes, off Williamson (2-19) in the 45th over. He scored 47 runs off 72 balls, with three fours, as the 4-0 score-line loomed large. — PTI Scoreboard New Zealand India |
We failed to adapt and improvise: Dhoni
Wellington, January 31 India lost the fifth and final ODI by 87 runs here to go down 0-4 in the five-match series, the third match of which ended in a tie. “Throughout this series, they (New Zealand) have played very good cricket. Their new ball pair has been very good but where they`ve taken the game away is in the middle overs batting which set up their charge late in the innings, picking up 80-90 runs consistently,” Dhoni said after the drubbing today. Asked about his own team`s performance, a visibly drained Dhoni said, “It is important to improvise and adapt quickly, which we have failed to do.” “From the talent point of view these are the players who have done very well in the past, winning the Champions Trophy. But they have to back themselves to play their strokes and the execution was lacking,” he added. Dhoni said the upcoming two-match Test series, which starts on February 6, would be a tougher challenge for his players. “It`ll be a bigger test of character in the Test series and it will be good for our younger players. I am looking forward to it,” said Dhoni. Dhoni`s opposite number Brendon McCullum said it was easily the biggest triumph for the Kiwis in a long time. “It`s probably the best series win since I have started playing for New Zealand. The boys worked very very hard to pull this off, especially against a tough one-day side like India. “We saw (debutant pacer) Matt Henry come in and take to it outstandingly, there was Hamish Bennett and Jimmy Neesham and the emergence of Corey Anderson as well. It`s been pretty pleasing to see Kane (Williamson) and Ross (Taylor) score all those runs,” he said. — PTI |
Karnataka in driver’s seat
Hyderabad, January 31 Starting the day at 230 for no loss, Karnataka batted Maharashtra out of the contest as they finished the day at 474 for seven in reply to Maharashtra's first innings score of 305. While No.3 batsman Ganesh Satish (117) was out on his overnight score, opener KL Rahul (131) completed a well-deserved century. Veteran Robin Uthappa (72) also hit a stroke-filled half-century to consolidate Karnataka's grip on the proceedings. While Maharashtra bowlers put up a far better show on the third day taking seven wickets with further addition of 244 runs, the four dropped catches during the second day will certainly come back to haunt the western state. Left-arm paceman Samad Fallah was the pick of the bowlers, taking three for 74 while medium pacer Shrikant Mundhe also got a couple of wickets for 89 runs. Off-spinner Chirag Khurana got two wickets for 110 runs in 39.1 overs. The day started with centurion Satish being dismissed in the very first over when he missed trying to defend a straight one from Khurana on the backfoot. His 212-ball knock contained 16 boundaries. The 21-year-old Rahul, who was six short of his fourth first-class century, got to the coveted landmark when he swept a Khurana delivery to the mid-wicket boundary. For someone, who is considered to be a national prospect, a hundred in a Ranji Trophy final will do his confidence a world of good. — PTI Scoreboard Maharashtra 1st inngs 305 |
Yuki rises just in time
Overcomes cramps to beat Yang, Som’s fate hanging
Indore, January 31 Troubled by cramps in both the legs in the third set, Yuki fought off pain and his sluggish rival for a 6-2 6-4 6-7 (1) 6-3 win in two hours and 52 minutes as he put India ahead in the first round tie. In the second singles, a defensive Somdev was locked in an engrossing battle against an offensive Ti Chen, in which both have won two sets apiece and fifth set was tied 7-7 after four hours and 30 minutes of tennis. When bad light forced suspension of the match, the score was 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-2, 7-7. Somdev has squandered four match points, including three in the ninth game of the deciding set, so far and Chen has kept his side's hopes alive to level the tie with his fighting spirit. The match will be completed tomorrow before Rohan Bopanna and Saketh Myneni clash with Hsien-Yin Peng and Hsin-Han Lee in the doubles rubber. There was hardly any contest in the opening singles as Yuki hit winner after winner with superb control over his shots and even when he suffered the injury and was limping, Yang failed to take advantage.

Punjab Warriors settle scores with Waveriders
New Delhi, January 31 It was a sweet revenge for the Punjab outfit who had finished second best in the previous encounter between the two sides last week. Both teams produced fast-paced hockey in the first quarter but it was the visitors who enjoyed a one-goal lead after the end of 17-and-a-half minutes. Star drag-flicker Sandeep Singh struck in the seventh minute, converting the very first penalty corner. The Waveriders also got some opportunities in the opening half, earning as many as three penalty corners, but failed to make use of them. Even though the Waveriders continued their attacking game after the change of end, goals eluded them. The hosts' forward line created some good moves but failed to convert them into goals. Punjab Warriors, meanwhile, earned another penalty corner five minutes into the second half but this time Sandeep shot wide. S V Sunil missed another bright chance for the visitors in the third quarter as his reverse shot from top of the circle went inches wide of the goal. Satbir, however, doubled Warriors’ lead in the 63rd minute with a powerful stroke after pouncing on a rebound. But Rupinder scored from a penalty corner in the next minute to keep Delhi's hopes alive. Warriors, however, had the last laugh when Shivendra Singh scored three minutes from the final hooter to make the scoreline 3-1. — PTI Today’s match: UP vs Ranchi (3pm), Kalinga vs Mumbai (Live on Star Sports, 8pm) |

Waveriders too good
for Lancers
New Delhi, January 31 Matt Gohdes (21st), Danish Mujtaba (48th) and Llyod Norris Jones (53th) were the other goal scorers for the home team. The Sardar Singh-led side dominated from the onset and made repeated forays into the circle to keep the jittery Lancers on the back foot. Timothy Drummond found an opponent’s foot to earn Delhi their first penalty corner. Rupinder’s drag-flick brought a loud cheer from the handful of Waveriders' supporters present at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. — PTI |

Jeev, Bhullar miss the cut, Shiv sneaks through
Chandigarh, January 31 The Indian duo was way behind the leader, Rory McIlroy, who dominated the field and continued to lead at 11-under 133 after a two-under 70 today. It was not a very good day for Tiger Woods either as he carded a 73 and currently lies at three-under141. Shiv Kapur was the only Indian professional to make the cut this week after he carded a two-under 70, following a 72 in the first round. Jeev, however, had a good second round, carding a three-under 69 with birdies on the second, fourth, seventh, 12th and 13th holes after starting with a bogey on the first hole. He dropped one more stroke during his round, on the par-four 16th but moved up to level-par 144 for the week, falling two strokes shy of making the cut. Gaganjeet needed to come up with a spectacular round but he only managed a two-over 72. |
Zurich, january 31 It turned out to be a bad day in office for Anand, who lost his way in the middle game and his counter play bid did not materialise. World champion Magnus Carlsen outplayed Boris Gelfand of Israel in a remarkable game. The other game of the six-player round-robin tournament between Fabiano Caruana (Italy) and Hikaru Nakamura (US) ended in a draw. Carlsen and Aronian have emerged as the early leaders on two points each. — PTI |
